Obviously, the goal of this experiment is to grow the lobsters until they’re big enough to settle to the seabed and then release them, because they have a much higher likelihood of surviving to adulthood when they’re able to hide. Ideally, captive lobster hatcheries can boost the wild population and keep things stable, so we don’t have a major crash in a decade or two.

The first year we tried this was pretty bad. We had a lot of eggs, but very few babies. It turned out that the CO2 levels in the building spiked as more guests visited throughout the summer, and that settled into the water and threw off the pH and caused a chemical reaction that prevented a lot of the eggs from hatching. I think we ended up releasing three baby lobsters (which is still better than their wild survival rate but not great).

The second year was a little better. We added a de-gasser to the aquarium and got a ton of larval lobsters, but right as they were settling to the bottom we had a disease outbreak that killed most of them. We ended up releasing four babies at the end of the season.

But this year? Oh boy. We have so many lobsters that we had to release the first round early (usually we wait till September or October so guests can see them). We just released a total of FIVE HUNDRED AND TWENTY FIVE baby lobsters, and we still have over a hundred who haven’t settled to the bottom yet. I genuinely don’t even have words to explain how cool this is. OVER FIVE HUNDRED. We just added hundreds of lobsters to the wild population that wouldn’t have been there otherwise.

What's the first "big news story" you remember from when you were a kid?

It's something I love to ask mixed-aged groups sometimes because I think it's really interesting to see the responses. I've gotten answers from the Olympics of [whatever year] to Watergate to more recent stuff from my niblings.

I also remember Black September holding the Israeli Olympic team hostage in Munich in 1972.

Then for me came Watergate hearings, but I was seven and they were boring, so I didn't pay much attention to them. That was a story of interest only to grown-ups. Nixon resigned just before my eighth birthday.

The 1977 New York City blackout during the Summer of Sam. Down in Virginia, I remember the local affiliates of the Big Three going to static as they lost their signal feeds from New York. Our local ABC affiliate scrambled and threw on an old syndie copy of a Diana Rigg episode of "The Avengers" from their library. I woke up on my eleventh birthday some weeks later to headlines that the Son of Sam had been apprehended.

Three Mile Island and Mount Saint Helens were also big news events during my junior high school years, but the seminal news event for me between 1979-81 is a tossup between the 444 day Iranian Hostage Crisis and the failed assassination attempt on Ronald Reagan.

When OP noted that they were in second grade when the OJ verdict came down... I can quite clearly remember where I was when the verdict was announced: in a science class at Tidewater Community College, listening to the verdict being read on headphones. My dropping my pen was enough to prompt the professor to ask what the verdict was... but in my head, I was certain that was a class took over the summer in 1995, so that I could make sure I got my Associates in 2 years, and not during the Fall semester in October.
