So I might start posting here again. I took a pretty long break after seeing how the band members failed to use their platforms to do anything substantial for the BLM movement, because, although I don't believe in viewing celebrities as personal heros, that was still v disappointing to see (especially Frank's response, doubly so given his history of identifying himself w the more anti-establishment messages in the punk scene). However, my relationship to the band has always been less about holding these figures up as icons I admire and more strongly focussed on examining the band's history through the lens of its cultural impact (as well having a personal interest in the lives of some of its members out of an interest in how their experiences and characters have evolved over time -- at least, as much as a I can tell that from an outside perspective -- as well as how the way fans perceive them seems to have changed). Although what's happened has caused me to lose most of the feelings of endearment I had previously felt towards the band members themselves, out of a combination of fond nostalgia for the cultural entity/figure of the band (the "idea" of it, if you want to use gerard's terms) and its role in my own growing up, as well as a continued interest in the lives of its members and the activities of the band itself from the perspective that I referenced before, I'm likely going to return to blogging here in a somewhat part-time capacity. I'm going to still be using my old tags (as much as I can remember them) for organization's sake, but please don't read too much into any deep fondness or sense of support that these tags might imply, as they were created years ago.
As always, black lives matter, and it is only just that this inherent value be universally acknowledged, by any and all individuals and institutions, and result in according treatment. I'm going to start reblogging donation posts here as they circulate across my dash, and I strongly encourage you to make a donation if you are in a position to do so.
