I honestly did not anticipate the environments of Frankenstein. Every adaptation or derivative work I’ve seen involving Victor Frankenstein or his monster (of which I have no seen many, I admit, I’m thinking of popular stereotypes probably) seems to place them in desolate mountains or dreary castles or somewhere miserable where it thunderstorms 365 days of the year.

But Mary Shelley really makes an effort to describe this beautiful natural world around Frankenstein. The guy basically lives in the countryside depicted on the label of a Swiss chocolate bar or something. Oh, there are these gorgeous forests and lakes and alps everywhere. Every time she describes the land, she’s pretty much describing it as breathtakingly divine.

And Victor appreciates the scenery! When he’s not out of his freakin’ mind with madness or depression or anger, Victor loves his homeland. He loves the landscapes around him. He loves the natural “God-given” world.

It’s a striking contrast to Victor then playing god.
