Wow, since chapter 2! You are patient and I cherish you :)

I’m much harder on Duane than I used to be. Long ago he sprang from a more naive part of me that was certain he had perfectly logical reasons for his biases, but I judge him harder for those biases now than I once did. I think for all his intellect he has shied away from a lot of observational data that contradicted much of what he preferred to believe in, and taken the easier path, questioning very little of the world he was presented. Duane didn’t deserve the fate that befell him but Duane’s wickedness is real. It’s a banal flavour of wickedness, and utterly common, but wicked all the same.

I don’t know if you read the chapter 14 post on Patreon much less the old script I threw up, but the way that story changed over the years is a good example of how my thoughts on Duane changed. He originally went from assuming the role of a powerless nobody acting out because of bullying and yet remaining the pure-hearted, selfless hero; to a figure with authority who was exploiting others for his own status and to support a tyrannical regime, all the while killing whom he was told and not questioning the orders.

I still love him, and I know where he’s going so I have hope for him, but I now recognise all the guilt he’s felt all these years didn’t simply spring from that night with Mikaila. Duane increasingly recognises his own sins. Watching him come to this recognition is of course a big part of Unsounded.

I really hope that Glass appreciates this. It’s not purely for flattery or parody, but for the sheer joy and appreciation I feel from being a fan of her work. Unsounded is something unbelievably special to me, and I hope it continues for many more years.
