It was the first time he had said it aloud. In his fantasies, he would have liked to be more romantic, more measured; perhaps before the dying fireplace with a glass of sherry, or out in the dales during a springtime picnic. But with her there, upon his lap, devouring his breath, Siegfried could not think properly. He could only feel. And what he felt entirely overwhelmed his reason.

Siegfried, alone at 3 a.m., thinks about Audrey and her new life away from him.

But he did not let her go. “Don’t go,” he implored. His voice came out broken, stripped of all that arrogance he used to use as a shield. “Please, Audrey. We cannot keep doing this. We cannot keep living in this intermediate space... pretending that nothing else exists.” Audrey closed her eyes tightly; the echo of his words struck her chest harder than any argument. We cannot keep living in this intermediate space. As if it were so simple. As if naming the thing aloud were enough to undo it.

Gerald nodded, visibly overwhelmed by the intensity of the man before him. “I never thought the day would come when I would see my brother envying another man,” Tristan said, letting out a genuine laugh, completely oblivious to what he had just witnessed. Siegfried did not join in the laughter. There was not a shadow of a smile on his lips. He merely held his cup with both hands, his gaze fixed on the wood of the table, and then, slowly, as if he could not help it, he lifted his eyes towards Audrey. “You have no idea,” he murmured to himself.
