The dialogue in Another Year is so awkward and intimate it was hardly surprising to learn improvisational techniques were employed in the making of this film (without hindrance to the elegant cinematography). Indeed most of Mike Leigh's work in both film and theatre operates without a fixed script. I am a true advocate of improvised dialogue in film, in particular when utilised to capture utter unhappiness as Another Year so successfully does. Â
