Which isn't actually Robo trying to be randomly pretentious (at least, not unreasonably). A 'Sophist' as a concept originates in ancient Greece, as teachers who taught philosophy, math, and other kinds of intellectual pursuits. However, what makes them distinct is that they had a reputation for their philosophy valuing hollow displays of cleverness over tangibly seeking knowledge. Nowadays, the idea of a 'sophist' is generally associated with deceptive/dishonest debate and fallacious arguments used for trickery. Basically, it's more about looking smart and flaunting the idea of intellect than something tangible, and is more about 'winning' an argument than actually being intellectually truthful

So by saying that, Robo is complimenting Bedman as much as he's insulting him. He acknowledges that Romeo is genuinely smart and driven but is too busy trying to show off and win every argument he gets into rather than doing something worthwhile with that intellect...which is a very reasonable thing to say, given that his own idealized self-image and perception of his own cleverness is a major aspect of why he was able to be taken advantage of and manipulated in the first place
