This is likely a vague reference to Cake at Stake but is much more importantly a reference to the idiom "you can't have your cake and eat it to." Meaning you can't have two contradicting things and that you shouldn't be greedy.

Pencil is saying that she will keep Freesmart together and that this will work even though it's impossible.

No matter what Pencil will get to Freesmart. She will form it and she will keep it together. They can't stop her because even if they leave she'll just try again.

I’ll build us high and I’ll be true

Pencil states that she'll build up Freesmart and "be true" referring to the idea of being true to someone or yourself, aka being loyal and genuine.

This is incorrect, regardless of her intent, Pencil keeps pulling Freesmart down by forcing them to act as she wants and her loyalty is to a concept rather than people.

She is not being genuine because she refuses to admit she's the problem and she doesn't let them be genuine either.

Pencil is demanding loyalty from Freesmart. Their reluctance, their "incorrect" actions, their defiance, all weigh on her and make her upset because they aren't doing what she wants.

Every action they do that she doesn't like makes her angry. It weighs on her until it explodes into an outburst and she attacks them again, forcing her to reset.

Am I destined to lose? Cause you’d lose too

There’d be no use if I don’t have you

She treats herself and the other members of Freesmart as still being on the same side. If she loses, they're losing too. If she fails, Freesmart falls apart, no one is happy.

Pencil wonders if she's destined to fail because it keeps happening because, as she views it, no matter what she does, they fail. In a more accurate view, no matter what she does, she always fails and thus has to restart.

Now we're back to the chorus. The first line shows Pencil elevating herself and telling the rest of Freesmart to match her. The second shows her dependence on them, she wants them to come help her.

The third is the title of the song. A play on the phrase "isn't that what friends are for". Following that meaning it shows the contrast of what she really is, or at least behaves as to them, of a "foe", with what she wants to be seen as, they're friend. What "a friend would do" is not leave her on the floor and instead try to help her.

She wants them to see her as a friend which can be seen in the fourth line where she calls herself an open book so they can always come talk to her. Something that is blatantly untrue due to her closed off, irritated behavior. She's not being open about what's wrong and they definitely can't talk to her about it.

Pencil in the sixth line tells them that they don't need to be scared anymore, this could be because she thinks she's presenting herself as their friend.

However! I think there's something really important thing to think about here that I haven't brought up yet. Book and Pencil's relationship. Specifically in the most recent episodes where Book says she refuses to go back and hates Pencil, and how Pencil reacts to that.

At learning that Book truly hates her and views her as an archenemy, Pencil abandons all efforts to try and drag her back and instead becomes hateful to her in turn.

This is what she means by "isnt that what foes are for" not just the way she generally acts against Freesmart, but in how several members of Freesmart in the true timeline have deemed her their "foe".

Don't be scared, you wanted this, remember? You wanted to be my enemy, remember? You asked for this.

Pencil slightly acknowledges that she is drowning here. That she needs them, or at least thinks she needs them to save her. That that is the only for her to get better. That she is clinging onto Freesmart because she wants to go back to when things were "better" so she keeps trying again and again.

"Let's not get too hasty" could either refer to these previous two lines, and how she realizes she's being vulnerable and backtracks, or to the following. Saying that they're being too hasty trying to leave her or backpedaling after she hurts them to rewind things that she regrets.

This endless loop isn't giving Pencil what she needs. She is not getting what she wants from Freesmart, she tries over and over again but it isn't working. I don't think she even really knows what she wants from them, but regardless she still feels like she doesn't have enough.

Are you getting bored? Aren't you sick of this? We've been through this before, I keep trying to do this over, yet it doesn't work. We've been here for years. Can't you just give me what I need?

You get my belonging

Pencil considers "her belonging" as a reward. Freesmart originally won her over. She believes she belongs there and that she gives them a place to belong together, something she thinks of as a privilege.

But once again you’re off-beat

Once again you wrong me

And I’m keeping score

Even though they "won her" they're still "messing up" and acting in a way she doesn't like. Regardless of gaining her belonging, they still anger her and she counts up all that anger.

Here she's accepting her role as their "foe" she is going to pay back every slight against her and be the enemy they view her as. That is what they wanted, isn't it?

This is the extended part, cut out of the episode itself.

She's upset with how the other members of Freesmart act like they're "her enemy" and reluctantly follow her while still showing they're upset. Even when they follow what she wants, she knows they're still unhappy. Like an animal, they cower and flinch at her actions.

Don't be upset at her for this. Your the one in the wrong, not her. Stop being scared of what you asked for.

Pencil is upset and angry and hurt, from Four, from the Exit, and most importantly what she views as a betrayal by Freesmart. This song shows how she desperately tried to go back to "before" and how things were then but how that doesn't work because she's still hurting from what happened anyways.

How she's hurt by Freesmart and how that hurt has turned towards hatred as she does this over and over and over again. She knows its not working and she knows she's lying but she keeps doing it for years.

Because she refuses to acknowledge how she's the true problem and has been from the beginning.

No matter what, she keeps insisting that she'll fight to keep Freesmart together anyways, that she'll force this to work. But that's wrong. She can't force it to work, there isn't a "no matter what" there's just a need to accept that this time in her life is over and that its not coming back and that she's the reason why.
