Or would he?

The only identity that has ever actually mattered to Lestat was “vampire,” and before that, “human.” He has always only cared about the perpetuation of his own existence and living however the hell he wanted in the world. And to Lestat, “vampire” is so far transcendent from all human worries and problems that identity outside of “I am” never mattered to him… Like, he didn’t care about or even pretend to care about Louis and Claudia’s struggles as black people, and in the books he never understood Gabrielle’s struggles with the misogyny of the 1700s. (And her gender dysphoria but that’s neither here nor there.)

Why?

Because he’s an asshole. Lestat is an asshole who has only ever lived the privilege of being a white man, who has never cared about any struggles of identity bc he never let them keep him from his desire for freedom of self. (And the fact that he only had this freedom bc he was a white man from a decrepit family of dying renown in the 1700s never occurred to him.)

Imo, he only really starts to value the idea of life outside of himself AFTER the Akasha Incident.
