interesting how ilya's choice to move to ottawa, both for his relationship and because he didn't want a russian passport or an american one, is treated both as if he made an immense noble sacrifice that shane is flagellated with, and as if shane held him at gunpoint and forced him to sign onto ottawa. but shane was actually practically chased out of montreal after being outed to a homophobic team, didn't get the choice, and moved to ottawa for less pay than he deserves and is treated like he should be grateful because he got to be with his husband, narratively and by the fandom. and ilya getting a supportive team is treated as negligible in comparison to him HAVING to leave boston (shane w a gun) where he had no close relationships. i mean i personally think that ilya should have been able to keep being on a competitive team, but logistically ottawa was the only choice.

ilya telling shane about irina and how they were best friends and he hung out with her all the time and he was her protector and he would skip school on her bad days to brush her hair and make sure she ate something even if it was just tea and she was an angel and you know shane is calculating how best to gently bring up to his husband that that doesn’t sound like it was very fair to child ilya without ilya reacting like a wild fucking animal
