Heartbeat
Above him, a pendulum swung. It held his gaze in place as the cuffs locked his arms and legs to the table. The metal was cold against his bare skin, but he was too far gone to notice the goosebumps that prickled him. Two small speakers were positioned either side of his head, directing a droning, pulsing sound directly into his ears. He was well and truly trapped, though if you'd asked him he wouldn't have said so. Tears flowed slowly from the corner of his eyes, but he was completely unaware. They only served to keep his eyeballs moist so that he couldn't look away from the pendulum, not even to blink.
"You really have found the perfect subject," said the woman in surgical scrubs. She was tall with sharp features. Her face mask wrinkled and the man could perfectly picture the shark tooth grin that lay beneath. He felt like prey, as trapped as the patient until she finally turned away towards a stainless steel tray table set up beside her. Her hand hovered over the surgical instruments on the table before she selected a scalpel from the array.
"Are you ready to begin?" When she looked back at him, her face was a sudden blank mask of professionalism.
