...The next instant the bare, white wall that Astrid faced was lit up with colour, an overhead projector filling her vision with near-blinding neons, colours that shifted and pulsed in endlessly eye-catching patterns. Astrid couldn't look away. When she blinked, the colours left imprints beneath her eyelids, compelling her to open her eyes and stare.
"There you go, sweetheart," Tabitha murmured. Her hand went to Astrid's hair, half petting, half holding her head in place. "Watch the pretty colours and let the thoughts drip out of your head, one by one."
"What…" Astrid tried to speak, but her mind was sluggish and slow, already finding it so difficult to put two thoughts together, let alone form a sentence. In a timid whisper she managed to ask, "What is this?"
"This is your greatest fantasy, come to life." Tabitha's voice was closer now, her breath tickling Astrid's ear. "I'm going to remake you into the robot you've always dreamed of becoming."
"…Why?" Astrid whispered. Her world had narrowed entirely into the lights consuming her vision but a heavy stone of dread sat low in her stomach, forcing her to at least try to resist the all-encompassing quiet that was threatening to blanket her mind.
"Because I love you, Astrid," Tabitha answered, soft and reverent. "I want to give you everything you've ever wanted."
