the game grumps released a line of merch featuring them as big titty anime girls called “Game Gyaru” which is like. stupid as fuck but not surprising at all given their fanbase
but the part that just ties it all together is that they were designed by a guy from the Odd Gentlemen, the company that allegedly stole OVER A MILLION DOLLARS of teenager-funded money from Andrew Hussie creator of Homestuck
And that money went towards their remake of King’s Quest. Which Dan gleefully played on the channel.

As a Trans person I understand the feelings about gender bends and what have you but I really gotta address the issues on this post:
Odd gentleman is a *company*. The shitty execs pulled the infamous home stuck stunt but almost nobody else, *especially* not the creative team had any knowledge of it.
What’s more, almost no one knew about the issue outside of the homestuck fandom *especially* late 30s Dan who was just excited to play a remake of a game he grew up on. Not everyone knows every bullshit thing companies have done it’s impossible to keep on top of.
“A guy from the odd gentleman” just means an artist who worked there. Are we gonna start assigning every heinous crime disney has committed to the animators? Artists get enough shit already.
Lastly, there’s literally not a single similarity between the two images….it is an obvious refrence but far from a trace. Look at her arms, head postion, and the fact they drew *more* of Arin than in the original. Thats not even going into the coloring and tricks needed to pull of the 80s anime filter look. This whole thing is a joke parody that’s *naturallly* going to refrence classic anime girl shit like this. Yall really need to learn the diffrence between a ref and a trace…
Anyways, to reiterate yes: we can talk about the issue with genderbents in general. But you don’t need to dredge up a whole “callout” post to do it. It’s over-reaching and only serves to stir up inflamed reaction than actual education on transphobia.

That’s actually pretty clearly a trace. I ran them over each other and more than a couple lines completely match up. The one that really tipped me off was the hip on the blue one. It’s an exact match from the waist down. Her torso would be the same if the new one wasn’t being grossly objectified and hourglassed. Also here’s a fun fact, it’s really simple to trace something and then move a few lines around, which you can see happening if you just gently tilt the original–it makes the lines the same. It’s still hyper unethical. And while the one in the front might be less traced, you can see where things were just moved around in certain spots. And why the chest doesn’t match–it’s gotta be huge! Because that’s so funny and subversive!!! IN YEAR OF OUR LORD 20-FUCKING-18.
Even ignoring that, the costume is clearly just a fucking recolor with a jacket thrown on top. Which is bad enough and might be grounds for a copyright claim. That’s not a cute Homage. A cute homage is that some of the color variants in P4Arena are based off of other characters. A cute homage is Hatoful Boyfriend using Giga Drill Beak. This is straight up too-lazy-to-think-of-my-own-shit theft.
Also “not knowing” what a company did is not an excuse. I know literally nothing about Homestuck. I know even less about Kings Quest. But I sure as fuck knew they stole a shit ton of money from Andrew Hussie. Because, as a content creator? It’s my fucking job to research this stuff. It’s my job to know what’s going on in the world.
People liking them and thinking it’s funny doesn’t absolve creators of the clear ethics violations going on here. The genderbend is gross. The objectification of the female body is disgusting (it’s 2018, it’s not subversive and if they think it’s funny they need to be shoved directly into a forum where women discuss their discomfort with their bodies). Outsourcing to a company that hurts other creators is downright awful. And then clearing designs with carbon copy costumes? Is lazy.
They did a bad job and they should be called out for it.
