While doing research for my WW1 pilot AU (ofc finnpoe), learned something that blew my mind.

Parachutes existed and were used long before the war, but the air forces would not issue them to pilots because they were convinced it would “make them more likely to abandon a plane that could be repaired.” Their opinion was that not having a parachute would make the guy work harder to land the plane...

...except these planes were massive flammable death traps and a pilot’s average life expectancy was 11 weeks before they either burned to death, jumped to their death, or shot themselves to avoid fates 1 & 2.

Out of thousands of guys barely out of their teens, only a handful survived the war. It wasn’t until ww2 that the military realized a trained pilot is worth more than a plane and issued parachutes. History is fucked up.
