The world is full of dualities; 2 parts designed to make a whole. Left & Right, Up & Down, In & Out, Right & Wrong, Good & Evil. I don't know about you but my head can be a pretty crowded place sometimes. Every day is full of so many thoughts; so many emotions. Some are mine and some come from others. Then there are advertisements, songs, TV shows & movies, politics, family, money, health... just name a few. That's a lot to have to process and sometimes it can be tricky to know exactly what to do with all that input. Talking to others is a great way to help sort through thoughts and emotions but we aren't always able to do that so... A Another great way we can help ourselves sort through all of that is through journaling. By reflecting on thoughts, emotions and events we are able to recognise patterns, find logic or reason and begin to organise the chaos that sometimes forms unexpectedly. It creates a safe space where you can sift through the myriad of experiences that life throws at us and a safe space to find you and your hopes, your dreams, your true feelings and make decisions with clarity and conviction. This week we've been talking about mindfulness and how practising mindfulness can help us focus our thoughts and feel more at peace within ourselves and more at peace with the world around us. One way we can help ourselves to cultivate mindfulness is to practice it and one way to practice becoming mindful is through meditation. There are a lot of misconceptions around meditation and I hear a lot of people saying they just can't do it. If you have ever found yourself doubting your ability I am here to tell you that's okay. Meditation is not something most of us have grown up with and when we try new things they can often feel a little uncomfortable and strange. If you find yourself questioning your ability or feeling restless, be kind to yourself. You have NOT failed and you ARE capable. If you feel this way, it just means you are at the beginning of your journey and that is exciting. If you keep trying, you will soon start to notice that you are able to focus a little bit longer each time. By practising meditation just a few minutes a day, a few days a week you will make it familiar to your body and you will be able to start to relax into it more. When was the last time you tried something new? As we enter our 8th week of lockdown, the challenges of an extended lockdown are looming all around us. As movement is further restricted & the walls begin to look way too familiar, life can start to seem repetitive. Some days it's easy to get lost in the feelings of monotony & despair can start to seep in. During these times it can be helpful to try new things or try doing old things in new ways. Have fun & play with the mundane. ◇ Listen to a different genre music ◇ Rearrange cupboards so that you use things differently, like stacking dishes by person rather than type ◇ Clean out stored items so that you release old stagnanet energy that you're holding onto ◇ Create something, anything! I find this one particularly enjoyable ◇ Learn a new skill or start a new hobby These are just a few of the things that we are adopting into our lives during these times.
