I'm trying to watch a horror film from every country that's made one. I've broken down the countries by continent to make things easier for
this has been my Special Project for the past few months & i've decided to turn it into a letterboxd list to help other people who might want to attempt a similar challenge. one thing that's been really frustrating when trying to find more obscure movies is when people leave reviews but don't offer any leads on how to track down the film. so i made sure to include as many watch links as possible for movies i found on free non-subscription sites like youtube, vimeo, tubi, plex, etc. i'm going to keep updating this list & prioritize switching out unavailable movies for films that are accessible to stream for free, whenever possible. if a country isn't included on this list, it simply hasn't made a horror movie yet (according to letterboxd's data which is sourced from tmdb).
here are some highlights from my journey so far that i recommend! all of these have less than 1,000 member views on letterboxd. the titles link to where you can watch the films for free.
Imajuik (2022), 18min, Greenland - after the apocalypse, the last person in nuuk finds out she's not alone. very spooky, made me tense!!
Asema (2023), 35min, Suriname - while visiting his grandma for the summer, deon & his friend jimmy try to catch a vampire. fun & light-hearted but spooky at the right moments. the kids had great comedic timing.
Kindil (2016), 40min, Algeria - during a trip to the beach without her husband, a young mother is drowned by a group of men - but the violence of her death transforms her into something else. i wish this one was feature length, but it's beautiful & haunting as it is.
Guilt (2014), 29min, Faroe Islands - a nurse caring for an elderly woman finds herself haunted by ghosts from her past. really atmospheric little short that's both classic & just a bit fucked up at the same time.
The Witch with Flying Head (1982), 92min, Taiwan - it's about a witch with flying head. what else do you want from me.
Alpha bros idolizing the Grinch and missing the point
perhaps some will disagree, but i think the world got worse when we changed the colour of the night
this is what i mean
Via @bulbaderp
To be clear, THIS is how nights of the future should be lit
This is bat friendly street lighting, which not only looks sick as fuck but allows bats to pass through without disturbance, as they cannot see red.
orange and especially white lights deter bats and prevent them from reaching feeding grounds at nighttime. Please if you can, write to your local council and encourage red street lights!!!!
ALSO! red light doesn’t fuck up human night vision much so you can go in and out of lit areas without readjusting
the red light not fucking up human night vision is also why a number of older cars had gauges that lit up red at night
i legit miss red lights in cars and appliances n stuff. red city lighting is goated
I FUCKING HATE WHITE LED LIGHTS!! I HATE THEM!!! THEY'RE RUINING EVERYTHING!!!!

JOINING THE MILITARY= PUNK
going to queer meetups in the lands between and some raya lucaria student calls me butch because I wear full armor
Stephen King released a novel last year with just a straight up uncomplicated uncritical rendition of the plural tranny psycho killer antagonist and in the afterword was like "i wanted to do something like Psycho :)"
these things have not been reckoned with
this isn't directly related to the ongoing discussion of this trope in horror and the transmisogynistic legacy of seminal horror films like Psycho, but i think it's worth talking about as a larger illustration of the narrative roles afforded to transfeminized characters:
there is exactly one other explicitly transfeminized character in this series by King (the Bill Hodges/Holly Gibney series of detective novels). she appears in the climax of End of Watch (2016) as one victim in a montage of victims coerced into suicide by the antagonist. she is described very clearly as a trans girl, but is directly referred to by the text as a gay boy. i won't go into detail, but her on-page suicide (unlike the others in the montage) is a dark comedy beat, played for laughs
yes! nail on the head right here. like yes, it's worth it to be like "fuck stephen king" and criticize the particulars of his transmisogynistic writing, but the broader point is that this is what transfemininity looks like in pop culture and it's what it looks like right now!
this isn't history or a settled issue, it's our current reality
if ur a trans girl and ur partner is not an ardent transfeminist frankly you need to dump their bitch ass. you can and will find better partners. i promise. i love you

How it feels to imagine a female character's voice as deep when you read the source and then watch an adaptation that gives her some Elmo ass voice
HAPPY BIRTHDAY CEASER SALAD AND NOTHING ELSE!!
Amazing moments in Dads: my friend’s dad’s critique of Frankenstein was, “I just don’t think the author had read science fiction before.”
"I'd say she knows a little more about sci-fi than you do, pal, BECAUSE SHE INVENTED IT!"
