Anyone with two working eyes could see that Charles Leclerc was down bad for you.
Or at least, everyone with two working eyes except you.
You had lost count of how many times someone—whether it was a friend or a vaguely familiar face in the paddock or, god forbid, even your own family—had looked you in the eyes, placed their hands on your shoulder and told you that Charles Leclerc was head over heels in love with you.
Every single person had the same mixed expression of pity and exasperation when you replied with, “we are just friends”.
Because, truthfully, that was all you were. You could see why people got it twisted, why thought there was something more between you, but it was just because they didn’t understand. They didn’t understand that the affectionate touches and soft smiles and teasing grins were just something that had always been a part of your friendship with Charles for as long as you could remember.
“Delivery from catering,” a voice spoke up behind you before a hand appeared before you, blocking your view of your laptop screen you had been intensely staring at a few seconds ago.
You blinked, once and then again before your brain caught sight of the familiar rings and bracelets in front of you. You tilted your head back to find Charles already staring down at you. “I thought you had a meeting?”
“It ended early, we know what we want to do for the next practice session,” Charles answered with a shrug before nodding down at your laptop. “I thought you were going to eat before you continued working.”
You flashed him a sheepish smile.
“Eat,” he insisted, shoving a plate in your face again. “I got these because I know they’re your favourite.”
Your expression instantly brightened at the plate of mozzarella sticks. “I could kiss you right now.”
“Shhh, Charles, I was talking to the mozzarella sticks,” you continued, seemingly unaware of the growing blush spreading across your best friend’s face.
“Yes, obviously,” Charles laughed, though it sounded a little too forced. He quickly moved your laptop out of the way, placing the plate down before he took the seat next to you. “I made sure Susannah made them. No one else.”
“I would marry that woman for her mozzarella sticks alone,” you murmured honestly, grinning a little when Charles let out a snort.
“I will let her know,” he teased.
“You can be my maid of honour,” you retorted, lightly nudging your foot against his underneath the table.
“I’d be whatever you wanted me to be,” Charles replied, a little too soft and a little too honest. But he always was like that around you, always had been.
Your smile softened. “That’s why you’re my favourite person,” you murmured, watching the way his face lit up in response.
“Eat your mozzarella sticks,” he nodded towards the plate. “Afterwards, you are taking a break and walking with me.”
You groaned, but it was half-hearted. “I thought being friends with a Formula One driver meant I could stay inside the nice, AC buildings, not be dragged out to walk around the track you already know off by heart.”
“And people say I am the dramatic one in this friendship,” Charles scoffed playfully before nudging his knee against yours. “I’ll make it worth it. I always do.”
