the sewing machine is like if a horse and an inkjet printer had a child
they should teach useful skills in school like home economics and how to safely pirate media
all I learned there was that the homunculus was the powerhouse of the cell I had to learn everything else myself
Spent a ridiculous amount of time last night obsessively editing my hand written zines in Photoshop to take away any tiny blemishes so they were definitely readable.
Whatever. Understand or don't.
using violence to liberate people from sweatshops, unsafe mines, and grinding poverty isn't the same as using violence to impose those things on people. the idea that violence is morally repugnant regardless of context is a belief that every oppressor throughout history would love for the oppressed to hold

my friend's discord server has a "proof of touch grass" channel where they post pics of them doing regular activities outdoors/in public. i think many online spaces could benefit from such a thing
when i was super depressed - like struggling to eat anything barely able to get out of bed to pee depressed - my good friend asked me every day to send her a picture of me holding a leaf and a picture of a meal i was eating and it helped me significantly
(also, she was never judgey - if my meal was a single potato chip she would simply say good job eating a potato chip today <3 )
which is to say, i agree proof of touch grass is a good idea for online spaces
This kinda required my brain a bit

You point out that something going on in China is very capitalist and there’s always somebody who goes “but aren’t they communist tho”
My friends, pure communism in practice was dead the moment it started and Chinese internet influencers have so many fucking sponsorships per video. Have you had your head under a rock for the past 30 years?
Top 3 things people love insisting they don't have despite it being impossible
Pronouns
An accent
Bias
Im going to shoot you people with a fucking gun
Everyone has an accent it came free with your language 🙄

I think the thing is .....most folks don't think about if they have an accent.Yes we ALL have accents but ya just assume ya don't have one ( I have a weird one ,I have been told by southern folk I lack a southern accent saying I sound more northern but northern folk say it's noticably southern )

I live in Colorado, USA, generally regarded as pretty neutral. I am from the rural mountains of the southwest part of the state, which is also pretty neutral, with a few phrases sprinkled in ("As the crow flies" is a lot more meaningful when it's a half hour hike over the mountain or a half hour drive around)
When I visit my hometown, which I have not lived in for more than 20 years, I immediately get the locals discount. Not because of my name, which, due to my mom being a teacher for 30 years, is recognizable. Not because of my attitude (it is characteristic of Western slope Coloradoans, as well as Front Range Coloradans to be impolite but friendly, and to extend help to those in need, but not without being snarky about it)
But I apparently have a accent that is noticeable over a travel of 200 miles within a state that is 150 years old that is famous for a neutral accent.
Okay so lets think about why you as an American thinks that everyone "assumes they don't have an accent" and why is the American accent considered the "neutral" one.
i don’t feel like debating that topic much farther bc truthfully if it comes down to “women will lose to men in every sport bc they don’t have as much testosterone!!!!!” my elite feminist response is honest to god “ok we will lose with honor as equals instead of having our own special Easy Mode Female category so we can win amongst ourselves” like i’m sorry i just can’t be persuaded. i’m a brick wall. i want co-ed sports
i bring a sort of “women can lose at some sports against men if it means being regarded as equals” vibe to the debate that “testosterone objectively increases performance” people don’t really like
My incredibly bleak philosophy of compassion is that we should all pity each other horribly and practice an according amount of kindness.
I asked for a pastry at the coffee shop. When I raised my card up to pay, he simply said "you're good." and waved it away. I wondered why. I wondered what made him think I deserved to have my order be free. Sparing me those two dollars.
Sitting down at the table, I remembered the scars on my arm. The universal signifier of "This Kid Needs Help." Maybe his kindness was only out of pity. He saw those and assumed there was some great misery and wanted to offer me some relief. It's generally good to be kind to people who are hurting. But I wasn't hurting that bad.
The thing is, there is some great misery. People generally aren't doing that great. There is a great misery within me and within him and within everyone, and some people notice the pain, some people express it, others don't. But we all suffer from something.
It doesn't matter if someone seems to deserve some relief. Everyone needs it. Everyone is suffering constantly. Some more than others, but still. This Kid Needs Help applies to everyone.
Thirty minutes later, I went to get a second pastry, intending to pay and leave a tip this time. It was the same cashier. As he reached to grab it for me, I saw scars on his arm.
But it doesn't really matter. He'd deserve a tip anyway. Because it's never just us hurting.

well, no, i didn’t expect leopards to eat my face, but this obviously wasn’t what the leopards eating people's face party wanted. they were stifled by their opposition and bureaucratic red tape! i think we should give more power to the leopard eating face party, so the leopards only eat the faces of people who deserve it. plus they just put a new leopard in charge of the face eating, and i think this one really brings something new to the table. so yes i'm voting for the leopards eating people's face party again. why wouldn't i.

Going to a talk with a panel of queer librarians and archivists today. Going to make very big, wet eyes at the head archivist and ask if she needs volunteers to help sort the backlog of queer history materials that I have been told exists at the local museum.
Me during the q&a section: "I've always wanted to do archival work, but I dropped out of university and had a lot of academic doors close on me. How can I get involved?"
Every single archivist on the panel: *laser eyes activated* What you're gonna do is come get our contact info after the panel. We need volunteers soooo bad.
SUCCESS.
I left with five different people's contact info and a lead on an internship opportunity. Go to the events at your local library if you can, my friends. 🥰
Another cool thing: this really awesome panel of professional librarians and archivists spent a solid chunk of time talking about how amazing Ao3 is. Specifically, how well-optimized it is as an actual archive. There was brief talk about fanfic and fandom as it relates to queer history, too.
There was also some discussion about the importance of archiving tumblr, and the way tumblr is relevant to modern queer issues & theory.
It was AWESOME.
Also, nearly everyone in attendance was wearing a mask. 🙌
I have had a VERY good afternoon. 🥰
This is 100% me being a crank, but I'm getting real annoyed at seeing Ancient Traditional Crafts™ videos that depict people grinding minerals to make pigments with no respiratory protection. Like, yeah, an N100 mask isn't Authentic and shit, but do you know what powdered mica does to your lungs?
@sawdust-emperor replied:
Watching any green or blue-green mineral being ground to make pigment in these, praying it's just rough glass or some shit and not any of the almost always notably poisonous green minerals:
Being as I've also seen examples where the craftsperson is handling what appears to be raw cinnabar with their bare hands, I wouldn't say the odds are good there.

I love vague labels that make people go "but that's confusing" or "but that could mean anything" Good. Keep guessing lol
"Queer doesn't actually tell me anything" who says I wanted to tell you anything. Who even are you.
the state does not need to assign you a sex, nor does it need to keep inalterable record of it btw
