he's also bi, which took him forever to parse out. i think Balthazar isn't especially inspired or enthused about his attraction to other people very often, so when he does feel intense attraction to someone, it becomes a huge fixation for him. it's not a romantic fixation, it's almost curative, like he has to watch them and catalogue them like some kind of new creature that's never been observed before. so he'd get caught in the oscillation of being certain that he was gay whenever the subject of his obsession was a man, then being equally certain he was straight whenever said subject was a woman, with periods of "i don't think gender factors in at all" clarity when the subject was nonbinary, and he had to go through these motions a few times over before it occurred to him that his tunnel vision in this regard was absurd
