If there's people out there that say they don't like ghoulcy because it's 'father-daughter' coded, I don't believe that for a second. That is a refusal to actually engage with the text - barely skimming over what the hell is actually happening, the images, performances, parallels and subtext presented to the audience. That is second screening and reacting.

Or. It's an inability to frame the real fucked up thing that lies at the core of them.

If we're talking uncomfortable dynamics, this is narcissism. This is the past self falling for the future self, and vice versa. This is seeing your inner most desires of yourself being lived - the version of yourself that is pure and hopeful, the version of yourself that is battle-hardened and powerful. This is all kinda fucked. And kinda fascinating. Because there is a chance to save one's self. And a chance to ruin one's self. And it's all tangled up and painful and beautiful and ruinous and consuming. It is not a healthy dynamic. But it could also help them. Which is absolutely mad.
