please reblog this i spent way too long on what was supposed to be a quick edit
LIKES TO CHARGE REBLOGS TO CAST
Treat anything on Discord as media that will be lost
Do not use Discord to host your files. Do not rely on Discord to preserve your text. DO NOT RELY ON DISCORD FOR ANY KIND OF PRESERVATION OR HOSTING!!
It CAN be lost, it WILL be lost! You must consider Discord as a part of the Core Internet, controlled by one company that hosts the servers.
I thought it was impressive at first that it replaced IRC, but now I am horrified. If the company behind Discord went under today, how many friends would you lose?
How many relationships? How much writing?
You may think this won't happen, but I remember when AIM went down and along with it, entire novels worth of interaction with my oldest friend.
IT CAN HAPPEN TO YOU. IT WILL HAPPEN AGAIN. NO COMPANY IS INFALLIBLE.
Back up your files! Download anything you've saved to Discord NOW, before the API changes go into effect! And DO NOT RELY ON THEM FOR HOLDING IMPORTANT FILES!
Here is a program that lets you download any and all of your discord DMs, your servers, everything. You can set the format (raw text, html (dark and light), and others. You can even download the uploaded files not just the text, though that may be just for the command-line version not the GUI window version.
Exports Discord chat logs to a file. Contribute to Tyrrrz/DiscordChatExporter development by creating an account on GitHub.
Please back up your conversations, your stories. I have a backup of everything I care about that runs once a week, with full attachment backups every several months. I write stories on discord, and would be devastated if someone happened to them. You have to have your own local copies of every file you care about.
you cannot convince me illegal immigration is a real problem and I'm sick of pretending it is. yk when you were a kid and you got mad at your sibling for crossing an imaginary line that you drew in the car? that's what you're doing right now except you're actually killing people over it

my corner store guy is a 50 year old man who's my best friend in the world and recently he was like "you're too pretty to be single I have some nephews you should meet. very handsome!" and I was like "a niece might be more up my alley" and he just got more excited and said "ah even better! I was overselling my nephews but my nieces are very beautiful"
OP the tags!!
if i had to explain what tumblr is like iād only show this
No one seems to be acknowledging the far funnier element of this, which is, that when you go to the commenterās account, you find out they are actually fucking roleplaying as a sexually repressed skeleton and jjst really committed to the bit while everyone in the reblogs is talking about how much they hate minors or trying to bring back asexual discourse or whatever. thank you kharak the skeleton servant of the almighty lich king

Cat on a tiny praying mat!!!
@muslimgamerā and others might confirm this for me: AFAIK cats are Clean Creatures in Islam, so cats on prayer mats - especially their own mini prayer mats - arenāt offensive. One website I looked at said ācats will be cats, cats like to mirror people, and giving them their own mat helps stop them being a distraction during prayers.ā

is it a hot take to say that i think you need to understand why something is bad, not just that it simply is?
this is a part of the problem
you need to be able to explain why you shouldnt use ai rather than āoh well its obviously bad and you shouldnt use it or else youre a bad personā because that isnāt logic. āai generates child porn based off of real children and whether or not it does is entirely up to how it is built and if pedophiles are able to find ways around those safeguards, because ai cannot in itself discern right from wrongā is a genuine criticism. āamazon tried to build a data center the size of tuson outside of tuson just to power their ai that wouldāve increased the inability to stay alive outside in parts of arizonaā is a genuine criticism. even āusing generative ai teaches you not to learn how to do things yourself even when theyāre difficult, devaluing necessary skills out of practiceā is a genuine criticism when you look at the amount of people who think they are able of doing a difficult major when they couldnt write their own papers in high school.
but āai is just bad because itās badā will convince no one and is a morally lazy position to take. about anything!
you need to know why reading someoneās diary is wrong if you want to learn about privacy and respect. you need to know why child sexual assault is wrong if you want to be able to help children form healthy age appropriate relationships. you need to know why capitalism is bad if you want to replace it with something else. you need actual concrete ideas and ideologies rather than āyou should agree with me because i have the right vibeā
I wonder if theyāre making a big deal of mentioning how the officer that shot a woman in the face 3 times for no reason āwas dragged from a car and injured by a suspect last yearā so that he can plead big baby wah wah PTSD kicked in and he had no choice but to shoot an innocent woman in the face 3 times. Because it is oh so scary to be an ICE agent and it gives them oh so much trauma and everybody is oh so mean.
The most violent I've ever been after my PTSD "kicked in" was swinging my cane at my brother before realizing that is was just him and purposefully missing. Don't let them use that as an excuse.
Absolutely, if you struggle with hypervigilance, making sure you are not handling guns and are not a member of law enforcement is entirely your responsibility.

i might have already talked about this before but itās actually crazy that jogging gets treated as a default āgetting into shape for the first timeā exercise ESPECIALLY if someoneās goal involves weight loss. people who are more than ~200lbs often need special gear and running techniques to avoid shin splints etc *even if all that weight is solid muscle*, and the likelihood of injury only goes up as strength to weight ratio decreases. someone whoās both heavy AND untrained is just going to be miserable for however long it takes their bones and connective tissue to adapt to the sudden increase in demand. usually this takes months, but it can take even longer under adverse conditions like, say, suddenly eating way less than normal. and all this for an activity that literally isnāt even fun unless you are a specific type of insane. there are so many low impact and actually enjoyable forms of cardio why are we slapshotting biomechanically disadvantaged novices into the david goggins torment dimension
could. could you maybe. list some of those 'low impact and enjoyable forms of cardio'? this is not sarcasm, this is a genuine request, every form of exercise I have tried recently has put me in the torment dimension. thank you and I love you
yeah sure! thereās a lot of good suggestions in the notes, iām probably missing a few
if you have access to a gym/appropriate facilities:
a LOT of people in the notes vouching for swimming, and it makes sense. not only is it basically zero impact on any of your joints, it engages just about every muscle in your body and itās actually easier to stay afloat the higher your bodyfat%
stationary bike/elliptical: works for some better than others, but definitely far lower impact than running, usually has adjustable difficulty, and you can watch youtube videos or play games on your phone to pass the time
non stationary bike: the benefits of a stationary bike plus the ability to travel to a location
weight lifting: if youāre a total beginner to exercise this genuinely might be a better place to start than any designated ācardioā activity, it Will get your heart rate up and build strength to do higher impact stuff with less risk, but designing a routine can feel overwhelming without help from a trainer/more experienced lifter
classes: yoga, pilates, dance, kickboxing, spin class, water aerobics, etc. as long as you can find one that accommodates your current fitness level and is a reasonably friendly environment
rowing: i actually know relatively little about rowing, but this has come up in the notes several times and people seem to like it. def seems like a good overall workout with little to no jarring impact
roller derby: definitely less of a Safe Beginner Activity and more āform of cardio you can do if you are on the fit side but still hate runningā but has come up in the notes multiple times specifically as a sport where a range of body types can do well
minimal equipment alternatives:
walking: if you have the resources to jog you have the resources to walk, and it really is a good form of exercise that also puts less strain on your joints
dance tutorials: seen a few people recommending these, thereās apparently a huge variety on youtube and you can take things at whatever pace works for you
yoga: also beginner friendly classes on youtube, good way to build up mobility and bodyweight strength
someone in the notes recommended hula hooping?? which actually sounds kind of genius especially if you donāt have a lot of gear or space. also iirc you can buy different weights of hula hoops for reasonably cheap so thereās a way to up the intensity over time
this seems like a decent resource at first glance and i think i saw more than one rec for them
one important thing to remember for anyone out there whoās significantly out of shape and feels overwhelmed is that when it comes to fitness you have one enormous advantage: it is currently EXTREMELY EASY for you to get exercise
do you 𫵠get winded walking up a flight of stairs? is curling a 5lb dumbbell 10 times difficult for you? can you barely do a single knee push-up? well i have great news: doing all of those things twice still probably takes less you less than 10 minutes. which means you can do a genuinely worthwhile daily workout in less than ten minutes. and itāll probably get easy fast, and then you can find a heavier dumbbell

look. look at this beautiful sword meme. iām going to cry
@petermorwood
I saw and reblogged this one a while back, but itās always worth repeating, and this time Iām adding a bit of background info comparing common fantasy sword features to the Real Thing (with pictures, of course.)
Leaf-bladed swords are a very popular fantasy style and were real, though unlike modern hand-and-a-half longsword versions, the real things were mostly if not always shortswords.
Here are Celtic bronze swordsā¦
ā¦Ancient Greek Xiphoiā¦
⦠and a Roman āMainz-patternā gladiusā¦
Saw or downright jagged edges, either full-length or as small sections (often where they serve no discernible purpose) are a frequent part of fantasy blades, especially at the more, er, imaginatively unrestrained end of the market.
Real swords also had saw edges, such as these two 19th century shortswords, but not to make them cool or interesting. Theyāre weapons if necessaryā¦
ā¦but since they were carried by Pioneer Corps who needed them for cutting branches and other construction-type tasks, their principal use was as brush cutters and saws.
This dussack (cutlass) in the Wallace Collection is also a fighting weapon, like the one beside itā¦
ā¦but may also have had the secondary function of being a saw.
A couple of internet captions say itās for ācutting ropesā which makes sense - heavy ropes and hawsers on board a ship were so soaked with tar that they were often more like lengths of wood, and a Hollywood-style slice from the Heroās rapier (!!) wouldnāt be anything like enough to sever them. However swords like this are extremely rare, which suggests they didnāt work as well as intended for any purpose.
I photographed these in Basel, Switzerland, about 20 years ago. Look at the one on the bottom (I prefer the basket-hilt schiavona in the middle).
A lot of āflambergeā (wavy-edge) swords actually started out with conventional blades which then had the edges ground to shape - the dussack, that Basel broadsword and this Zweihander were all made that way.
The giveaway is the centreline: if itās straight, the entire blade probably started out straight.
Increased use of water power for bellows, hammers and of course grinders made shaping blades easier than when it had to be done by hand. This flamberge Zweihander, however, was forged that way.
Again, the clue is the centre-line.
Incidentally those Parierhaken (parrying hooks - a secondary crossguard) are among the only real-life examples of another common fantasy feature - hooks and spikes sticking out from the blade.
Here are some rapiers and a couple of daggers showing the same difference between forged to shape and ground to shape. The top and bottom rapiers in the first picture started as straights, and only the middle rapier came from the forge with a flamberge blade.
Thereās no doubt about this one either.
The reason - though that was a part of it - wasnāt just to look cool and show off what the owner could afford (any and all extra or unusual work added to the price) but may actually have had a function: a parry would have been juddery and unsettling for someone not used to it, and any advantage is worth having.
However, like the saw-edged dussack, flamberge blades are unusual - which suggests the advantage wasnāt that much of an advantage after all.
Hereās a Circassian kindjal, forged wigglyā¦
ā¦and an Italian parrying dagger forged straight then ground wigglyā¦
There were also parrying daggers with another fantasy-blade feature, deep notches and serrations which in fantasy versions often resemble fangs or thorns.
These more practical historical versions are usually called āsword-breakersā but I prefer āsword-catcherā, since a steel blade isnāt that easy to break. Taking the opponentās blade out of play for just long enough to nail him works fine.
NB - the curvature on the top one in this next image is AFAIK because of the book-page it was copied from, not the blade itself.
The missing tooth on that second dagger, and the crack halfway down this next oneās blade, shows what happens when design features cause weak spots.
So there you go: a quick overview of fantasy sword features in real life.
Hereās a real-life weapon that looks like it belongs in a fantasy story or film - and this doesnāt even have an odd-shaped bladeā¦
Just a very flexible oneā¦
If you want more odd blades, Moghul India is a good place to startā¦
i could not ask for a better addition to my meme post than blade education thank you so much
Itās not fantasy anatomy, but knowing stuff about the objects you put in your fantasy world is also very important
