listen it's not that I think epic the musical is a perfect adaption of the odyssey but it was an impressive passion project that knew what it wanted to be and knew what people gravitated to in the original work and it put significant effort into conveying this through its unique medium and tone to the point that hundreds of other people felt compelled to put effort into their own artistic interpretations of that version of the story. and that's really cool! and yes I would be more critical if it was a 100 million dollar project made by a professional because what the fuck do you mean you're a world-famous director and you cut the my name is nobody scene are you goddamn serious
hearing anything about the nolan odyssey is so funny. it's like "they cut the extremely important and infamous nobody scene" "the cyclops is a giant puppet that they put in an actual historical cave + gave circe animatronics for her pig transformation instead of cgi" "they dumped plastic skeletons in an environmentally protected location they were not supposed to be in" "they recreated ancient greek instruments in order to have an accurate score" "all of odysseus's agency is basically gone" "anne hathaway actually learned how to weave ancient looms" "the women in this movie are treated like shit" "they actually buried actors alive to get those underworld shots" "did you see what the fuck zendaya was fucking wearing holy shit you can't DO THAT, MA'AM" "what do you mean there was a legitimate epic the musical reference" "NOT A SINGLE FUCKING GREEK WAS CAST IN THIS MOVIE"
like did nolan have two guys standing at his side at all times whispering ideas in his ear and one told the truth and the other told lies and they didnt tell him which was which until they wrapped production cause
lucifer is the perfect embodiment of pride
he's judgemental, patronizing, and self-righteous - especially towards the sinners (not to mention his own daughter). he seems to have given the sinners a chance but likely had standards they wouldn't be able to meet given how judgemental he is of the hotel and way he keeps looking for fault in people like alastor before getting to know them even as charlie keeps pointing out their redeeming qualities (which he then gets jealous of - like when charlie tells him how much alastor has done for the hotel)
he's arrogant and self-centered -- a well-intentioned narcissist who's less concerned with authentically bonding with his daughter and making her feel heard and supported than making her believe he's impressive and getting validation and recognition from her. he can't just be in service of his daughter and contribute towards her vision - he immediately makes it about what HE can do and how impressive he is in the song.
despite being the king of hell with all the power that entails which alastor is clearly jealous of, he still envies alastor's relationship with his daughter and can't be happy she has it - he's jealous and wants it for himself
he was probably a fucking menace in heaven who was always seeking validation and recognition and was more concerned with his own ideas than the greater good.
the more I'm seeing about the Odyssey movie (cant watch it myself yet, mobility impaired and broke), the more I'm truly beginning to think that this movie's biggest flaw was billing itself as The Odyssey. Apparently, the plot is a fascinating, horrific (in a good way), and deeply timely take on the original story. It's also very much NOT the original story, important plot points are missing or twisted beyond recognition, and the props and setting and casting* are anachronistic and random.
So, it changes the setting, casting, plot points and tone and everything else, to send clear and relevant messages. There was already another Odessey adaptation that did that- "O Brother, Where Art Thou". And guess what? It didn't try to claim it was The Odyssey, while making it clear that it was a TAKE on The Odyssey, and its now a classic. It is honest about being a reimagining rather than a page-to-screen depiction. Retellings, reimaginings and general New Takes on old stories aren't anything to be ashamed of, I think the DisneySlopification of the concept of a "reimagined old story" has given the concept an aura of hackiness, fake-woke, and shame that it doesn't deserve. Reimagingings are important and profoundly human. Reimaginings AND accuracy-focused adaptations BOTH are vital to keeping these ancient tales alive and engaging. It would just, imho, be helpful if people knew which to expect when walking into the theatre**
I really think that at least the non-blatantly-racist section of this movie's haters would be enjoying the fuck out of it if it had been more clearly billed as a reimaging/retelling rather than just "The Odyssey The Movie". Maybe that billing existed somewhere, but if so, I never saw it and it seems many others didn't either. If you walk into a coffee shop, order a coffee, and are given an apple cider, its understandable that you'd be upset even if it was the best cider you've ever had.
*too white, to be clear. wayyyyyy too white and too northwest-european. what the fuck is Tom Holland doing here, adapt the Canterbury Tales or something if you want that guy in your movie that bad. ...actually wait hold up, Tom Holland in Chaucer would be awesome????
**or buying a book. HEADLEY. yeah this is not a problem unique to Homer.

How the new Odyssey movie sounds to me based off of what I’ve seen on tumblr
Alastor's "Pride"
Sometimes being ACE gives you the imposter feeling within the community.
Old habits die hard...
Grace at 3 am with what’s left of his sleep deprived brain struggling: hot buns this is the best essay I’ve read all year. I’m giving this student two stars
scarred
Btw, the sigil on Lucifer’s back was directly copied from a picture from Google. Just search up 'angel sigils'.
Iroh: so Toph, what are your goals in life?
Toph: I’ve been banned from every major city’s transportation system except Omashu
Toph: I don’t know what their limit is but I will fucking find it
King Boomie, having exactly zero limits:
Unstoppable object meets immovable force
[Toph eventually slips up and is captured by the city guard force. Instead of being imprisoned or exiled, Toph finds herself being given audience with the King of Omashu.]
Bumi: Well, well, well. It seems I have finally met the troublemaker who has been causing such chaos with my rail systems.
Toph:…
Bumi: I must say, I am thoroughly impressed with your earthbending abilities. You remind me of myself when I was a lad.
Toph: Get to the point.
Bumi: I see great potential in you, Toph Beifong. I want you inherit my title once I am no longer fit to rule.
Toph: Wait what the fuck
Why wasn’t this Toph’s future instead of becoming a freaking cop. This would have made so much more sense.
My favorite part of this is “when I am no longer fit to rule” because
1. Implying Bumi was fit to rule at any point
1.1 except maybe in the sense that he was completely shredded
2. That he has no plans to die, (nor would death necessarily make him unfit to rule), but that he apparently intends to like. Tuck his arms and legs into himself and just roll off into the sunset.
3. Given that the Earth Kingdom has an actual ruling family that causes some drama in LoK, Toph continuing to cause monarchy confusion is both 100% in character and fucking hilarious.
Toph takes over as King Bumi the second and everyone is like “no that’s not how inheriting works” and Bumi is like “No no she’s right, I did say “inherit my title!”
When toph is no longer fit to rule, she instills bumi (Aang’s son) as her heir and he is known as bumi 3.
Her first act as ruler is to ban herself from Omashu’s transportation system, thus fulfilling one of her life goals.
But then she ignores her ban and continues to use the transport system forcing her guard to chase her and print wanted posters declaring her a fugitive.
Fortunately the clerks served under King Bumi the First and are well aquatinted with explaining chaos to the confused citizenry of Omashu. Without missing a beat they print the posters in 2 parts.
The first (read this aloud) part is a fairly standard Wanted poster explaining that King Bumi II Toph the Blind Melon Bandit Lord is Banned from the Omashu Transport system for crimes etc….
The second part (do not read this aloud) explains not to be concerned; if you see the King at one of the stations just shout “There she is!” The guards will chase her and you are free to go about your day. The King thanks you for participating in this guard training drill.
Why is every post about ATLA I see on this hellsite a goddamn banger

The funniest part of the new Insane video is that, in this universe, Lucifer has most definitely heard of the Radio Demon
I just noticed that the graffiti he ends up turning everybody into in ep.24 says "Win" lmfao
