in aotearoa, june isn’t our pride, it’s theirs. marsha p johnson and sylvia rivera are their historical figures, not ours. the phrase that “you owe your rights to Black trans women” is true there, but here we owe our rights to (mostly) Māori historical figures. i have the freedoms i do because of the legacy of an entirely different set of people operating in an entirely different context at entirely different times.

But because of american cultural imperialism, most queer people in Aotearoa don’t even know our own queer history. Carmen Rupe, Ngahuia Te Awekotuku, the Dorian Society, Gillian Laundon, Georgina Beyer, and the Wolfenden Association are some of our queer history. We should know their names! we should know what they did for us! but because of the power of the american imperial machine, we don’t.

our national pride month should be july, the month that the Homosexual Law Reform Act passed in 1986. our two largest cities hold their pride festivals in february and march, respectively. american queer history has very little (or nothing, depending on who you ask) to do with our queer history. anecdotally, from my own queries, queer youth in aotearoa know more about american queer history than our own.

International unity is extremely important, especially for the queer community, where often people will turn to online spaces when their irl spaces fail them and when there's not enough irl representation. Having a common month to celebrate sounds incredibly important to anyone who finds community over the Internet. But Idk, maybe the month of the first bill passing that *ever* legalized gay marriage, or something (that's arbitrary and just my first thought, but that'd be April 1st, 2001, Netherlands) would be much more fitting than anything US centric.

August as the first nationally organized pride matches took place simultaneously in Vancouver, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Saskatoon and Winnipeg in 1973.

The bathhouse raids could be treated the same as stonewall and that was in February. This was the largest mass arrest in Canadian history. And specifically targeted gay men.

Bill C-38 2005 which legalized gay marriage in Canada was signed into law in July.

March we had bill C-279 which extended human rights to transgender and transexual people in 2013.

Grace has nightmares every night, including the first time he sleeps in the tunnel under Rocky's watch. He tosses and turns in his sleep, he mumbles, he cries, he begs; his brain doesn't remember his last conscious moments on Earth, but his body does.

He doesn't remember having the nightmares. He knows he wakes up feeling like shit, but that's about it; not a big deal.
