I took things so literally as a child that I fully thought leg day was the one day a year that people worked out their legs and if they āskipped leg dayā they wouldnāt have buff legs for a year until the next leg day where they could try again
crazy how every childrenās cartoon in a suburban setting has the obligatory episode where the main characters are playing with a ball or toy or object that somehow ends up across the fence/in the tree/within the property line of the grouchy old person/possible witch of the neighborhood and the kids spend the whole episode coming up with elaborate ways to retrieve their stuff without the neighbor knowing but they get caught at the end in a very compromising position (hanging from a tree, on top of the fence, sprawled out in the yard) after trying to get their stuff and the neighbor says āyou could have just asked me if you could grab your ballā and invites them in for milk and cookies because they actually love children
tb to when my Latin professor was teaching us about curse tablets and was like hereās some metal scraps, go curse people
we all scattered across the campus and anywhere you looked you would see a hunched teenager with a makeshift stylus angrily engraving an aluminum tray with cursive Latin maledictions
I donāt understand social cues? my dear doctor youāre mistaken social cues donāt understand me

riddle me this reverend mother, if fear is the mind killer, then why am I still here?
I fear all the time, where is my little death that brings total obliteration?
latin student rites of passage are so wild like mine was to translate an ancient love poem and have to read in front of your teacher and whole class some freaky line like give me a thousand kisses, then a hundred, then another thousand, then a second hundred, then yet another thousand, then a hundred...
whoever says ancient poetry is boring needs to read some Catullus
"abi in malam rem!" means "go to that bad place" which is the latin version of "go to hell"
which is a latin version of a greek idiom βάλλā Īµį¼°Ļ ĪŗĻĻĪ±ĪŗĪ±Ļ which literally means (in its variations) "throw it/yourself to the crows!" which basically means go off yourself
ancient latin had a saying "flocci non facio" which literally means "I don't make it a tuft of wool"
which is essentially meaning "I don't give a fluff"
going from learning latin to hebrew is so jarring because latin is like an elderly but incredibly sharp grandmother who hits her cane on your fingers when you mess up a single word or pronunciation in your translation
(modern) hebrew is like a cool mom who lets you write without vowels and recognize the sounds in between letters just based off of vibes and you can even just make two very distinct letters look the exact same (I'm looking at you × and ×Ö¼) and who cares because if you're fluent enough it doesn't really matter if the intent for a word is there

average latin student translated sentence be like after three winters the murderous peasant (neut) will have been desirous of the beautiful enemy (masc) who would have been walking towards the merciful queen (fem) in Carthage where he/she/they/it would have had been being in the forum to sell the carriages to the red-haired liar.
saying you're a latin student is all fun and games until a deponent verb walks through the door looking all passive but translating actively and you know you're screwed
I think my opinion on parts of the Odyssey movie have 100% evolved in the days since I watched it, but my opinion is still unshaken for the aspect of the movie that introduces the threat of sexual violence from soldiers (via Circe) but then vilifies Circe by refusing to acknowledge Odysseusās soldiers part in that threat, posing Circe as paranoid woman who traps a ship full of āgood menā when she misidentifies them as lustful violent soldiers.
Circeās character, who in any other context would be a fearless protector, becomes the inopportune hindrance to the crew when you take away important context of the soldierās true nature. Odysseus essentially says ānot all menā are like that, which is a head-scratching revision to a movie that already condemns the greek soldiers for their part in the war. Why are we now getting cold-footed when itās time to condemn for the full extent of crimes? Whether the soldierās innocence is true or not is, at the end of the day, irrelevant. That is not the real issue with the movieās portrayal.
Circeās use of precautionary witchcraft and wise wisdom cannot function as a cautionary tale in a story that refuses to acknowledge the truth that her character revolves around.
JUST SAW THE MERMAID TALES S2 FINALE AND HERE IS MY THEORY BASED ON THE POST-CREDITS SCENE
"Every single one of you, I promise" before going into a portal could mean that The Wolf is (as I've theorized before) a version of aphmau that is going around to parallel universes to save each universe's Aaron
(this could be to protect HER own aaron, or to get aaron back his memories by healing his cursed soul in all universes)
nolanās odysseus is giving āsometimes your knight in shining armor is really just a loser in tinfoilā

please go read Emily Wilsonās review of the Odyssey 2026 because she reminds us that an Odysseus without his wits, his charm, his craftsmanship, and his discipline...is not Odysseus anymore, itās just Matt Damon in a helmet
born to start in media res forced to progress ab ovo
