⚠️before I start this rant, I do want to state in am not a professional writer, developer, or critic, but I have studied writing, films, video games, animation, and industry work. Take what I say with a grain of salt, but this is all my genuin feelings.⚠️
Indie studios can be forgiven for their shortcomings. Small staff, small budget, small resources. They should be given kind and gentle guidance to improve with the support of their communities. But a lot of people aren't gentle, or kind. They expect premium high quality from small teams, and they get quite aggresive about it.
Big studios deserve to be criticized. They have large staffs, they have large budgets, and they have many resources. They should know better, and despite this, they lie to their staff, fire the people keeping their media afloat, churn out sloppy half baked products, and they dont give a flying fuck about the people who care about their media. They just want money. They throw in filler, drag things out, and push extra product on their already impressionable communities. While criticism should never be aggresive or outwardly disrespectful, large studios need louder voices and heavier pushes for them to get anything done, and yet, those who harass indie creators for minor problems will deffend these companies to the ends of the earth. Saying its hard to make a game, saying the criticism is too much, expectations are too high, that people are too mean.
The common thread I find between those kinds of people is that they have never played the game, they never followed the development, they never stayed up to date with the creators, and the only time they're actively involved with the community is to harass creators for their criticisms, or for their mistakes.
I can't even directly say who spacificly I am referring to because the fandom surrounding the media has been so aggressive about deffending the absolute slop shoveled out by the huge money loaded studio, that they're even willing to directly attack the creators criticizing it, when those creators are all very well known for being non-contraversial and kind people.
Even worse? There are probably five different studios/media/fandoms I could be calling out right now. Take you're pick and it will work. The lack of media literacy amongst consumers leads to bad media becoming populer, big studios profiting, indie studios going unrecognized, and shit media, with shit plot, with lazy effort and a lack of passion becoming standard. Many industries are suffering, because people lack the attention spans to acknowledge quality over quantity.
Kids get a pass, gently and kindly guide them to better media. They don't know better.
