*3/4 examples used can be very extreme with their adult themes. I'm not saying you have to engage with these extreme themes, but maybe something a bit darker than bluey falling over and scraping her knee
as an artist with chronic fatigue who relies on ai to be able to create art, I'm pretty disappointed with your stance on ai. I was excited to participate, but since most of my art is paintovers of ai bases (I'm almost always too tired to start from scratch) I no longer feel welcome.
The information page has some incorrect information about how ai works (namely, the images used to train them aren't stored anywhere, theyre analysed/categorised and then deleted - they'd take up too much space otherwise).
Additionally, the apparent support for the expansion of copyright law seems purely reactionary - IP laws exist to opress smaller artists and protect the interests of the powerful, just like all property laws. It seems inconsistent to support legislature that could theoretically prevent an event like this from happening for IP reasons.
The tone of this isn't meant to be like, angry or anything. I'm just tired of ableism in fandom spaces.
We rarely see these messages as we are not as active as we should be here currently.
That being said this deserves an answer.
First and foremost, Linktober is our event and we make "the rules" of it. Not allowing generative AI is not ableist in the least. Understanding why we have that stance instead of thinking ill of us or the fandom would make more sense.
We do not allow Generative AI in Linktober for a multitude of reasons.
AI data centers are built in underprivileged/impoverished areas, use up and poison the water supplies, and jack up the power costs.
AI data sets that these programs use are full of appropriated art and creative works. That means the vast majority of material it is sourcing in order to generate something new is made up of stolen work. Not cool nor heroic.
Using AI instead of creating is against out main M.O. The point of participating in Linktober is not for likes or attention; it is for practice of creative arts and creative growth. It teaches time management and regular practice if participants decide to challenge themselves to complete every single day or more.
Using AI to generate from ANY AND EVERY FANDOM disrepects and devalues the original creations. It is disrepectful to the creators of said fandom; in the case the teams at Nintendo. It devalues the years of study and practice they have painstakingly gone through to be as talented as they are. That is dishonorable entirely. Learning from these masters is a more dignified path.
Prompting AI to generate creations is no greater than plugging an equation into a calculator then telling your math teacher you did the math. You didn't. Your teacher knows you did not learn anything and that is why they always ask to see the work on reaching a solution in math (and science too).
Do not look to Linktober as a scapegoat, as we are not anything remotely close to ableist or the ilk. We are a welcoming community of creatives learning and practicing alongside one another. We encourage each other to grow and learn. We know that someday AI may find its way to be a useful tool, but this is not that day.
We would like to extend an olive branch and offer to help you find a way to create that does not involve AI. Where there is a will there is a way and we push the boundaries on creative thinking here. If we need to start small with those who want to stop using AI then we are here to help.
We encourage those out there to do your research on AI. We encourage you to join our community as well even if you are not creating but are just a fan that wants a safe and welcoming space. The power is yours.
"Creativity takes courage" Henri Matisse
That is why we call it LINK-tober.
May the Triforce be with you.

*While interrogating a yiga member for the location of where one of the chain is being held*
Warriors: 'They will never find the body' is such a boring threat. A better one is, 'they will never stop finding the body.' *smiles menacingly at the tied up yiga*
Legend, angry AND bored: Or how about, 'they will be finding parts of you for the next six months... *pulls out a knife and thumbs the edge* and I'll make sure you're still alive for at least five of them.'
Four: Now that's a threat...
*Sky, covering Winds ears in horrified silence.*
