Little Connor sketch :)
I think Shane coming hands free the first time he was fucked genuinely made Ilya feel insane. Like, here is your league-mandated rival, he skates like a god, he has the media eating out of the palm of his hand, he commands the room without even seeming to realise his power, he is fucking gorgeous, he drops to his knees at the slightest prompting, he moans like a whore, and, oh! he also fucking spurts all over himself just from having your dick in his ass. Have fun trying to content yourself with fucking literally anyone else for the rest of your life!
imo a huge thing in the hayden discourse is the fact that a lot of us in the fandom are literally Homotron 3000 (myself included) and that really skews our perspective
like yes downright bigotry is never okay i am not defending that but the whole reason these characters are interesting is because they have to navigate queerness and unpack their internalized toxicity in a space where, for all intents and purposes, they're The First Gay Person Ever
the expert always overestimates what's common knowledge or however it goes
or something
god yes this 10000%!!!! because a lot of people also take for granted our own cultural/online privileges where it’s a lot easier to be surrounded by supportive people and those who are easily able to educate us! within the HR universe, it’s not like that at all! so they’re all fumbling around and trying their best even if the end results so bad.
Seeing @luulapants & others talking about issues with Ilya's representation as a second language speaker in fics made me want to list out some patterns of "Ilya speak" and how they do and don't align with real second language speakers of Russian.
My credentials: 2 graduate degrees researching multilingualism & second language phonology. Plus copyediting a book written by a first language speaker of Russian & Ukrainian after being her coworker for a decade <3
1. Pronoun drop: e.g. "is good". It is common with second language speakers, but I'm gonna support Luula's analysis of this as based on a mis-hearing of 'It's good' in a Russian accent - Russian has palatalized stops and the frication makes listeners reclassify them as fricatives. t^j -> s
2. Article issues: most common error, even amongst very fluent speakers. Includes mixing up indefinite (a/an) and definite (the) articles, dropping articles (e.g. 'I was going to store'), and hypercorrection (inserting unnecessary articles, e.g., 'I am going to the home').
3. Copula deletion: Russian has a null copula (when you can replace 'to be' with an =, that's the copula) so copula drop can happen in English (e.g., "I a teacher"). This one is drilled really hard for Russian learners so it doesn't come up as often as you would think. I can't think of canon examples of Ilya doing this.
4. Unfamiliarity with vocab: non-Russian fic writers - try checking a Russian/English dictionary because there are lots of English loanwords in Russian (or other Latinate loans) that share a common root. Luula's anon brought this up, but as an example, 'autism' in Russian is 'аутизм' and is basically pronounced the same - they are cognates. Ilya would have a very good guess of what this word means, along with other loanwords.
In my experience, idioms are some of the hardest/last vocab items to grasp because the words are common (so English speakers don't expect there to be a problem) but the meaning is non-obvious. Lots of English speakers won't even say the whole idiom, just expect people to understand from a partial recital. E.g. "When you assume..." ; "the best laid plans..." ; "speak of the devil" ; "when in Rome" etc.
5. Word order: English is pretty strict about word order, Russian has more free order (supported by their very robust case system + grammatical gender). This mostly comes up with subordinate clause order. For one example, I've noticed that English writers tend to put clarifying phrases before, Russian speakers after. (E.g., a Russian speaker might have written the previous sentence with 'as one example' at the end). These re-phrasings aren't necessarily ungrammatical in English, but they may come off as confusing (for very complex sentences) or the overall pattern across multiple sentences comes off as unnatural.
6. Question tags: fanfic writers love to give Ilya simple question tags as a vocab quirk (e.g. 'it's special, no?' ; 'You like this, yes?'. I haven't memorably experienced this from the Russian first language speakers I know, but Russian does have question tags like this (e.g., I understand that так is used pretty similarly to Canadian English 'eh?')
7. W vs V: I definitely exit out of fics if they give Ilya a use of "w" like Chekov from Star Trek. This is made up & fake.
8. Avoiding Do / Don't: English is weird about the verb 'to do' and lots of the time you can leave it out (even if native speakers would use it). Using question tags for yes/no questions is one way of avoiding constructions with 'do', another is using the target verb rather than replacing with do. E.g. 'Do you like to row?' An English native might reply 'yes, I do' while an ESL speaker might be more likely to use 'yes, I like to row' or 'yes, I like rowing'. Again, not incorrect but when it builds up as a pattern of speech it sounds less natural to a native speaker.
9. Skipping contractions: very common amongst all kinds of ESL speakers. English speakers will throw in a "had'nt've" and always use "doesn’t" over "does not". But lots of ESL speakers just pronounce each word always - especially if there is an auxiliary verb. It can be difficult to remember combinations like - is "I've not" or "I haven't" more natural (& the answer is different for different English varieties).
10. Verbs & nouns paired with prepositions: it's just really common to select the wrong preposition or drop it altogether. E.g., "baked with hands" instead of "baked by hand"; 'compliment about' vs. 'compliment on', etc.
Rule of thumb: just give Ilya good English. It's less inaccurate than 'caveman' Ilya and less xenophobic to boot!
REALLY good stuff!!
I'll add that not knowing a cognate can make sense in some situations. Like, if you've never used that word in English before, you don't necessarily know if it's the same in both without looking it up. But there are categories of words where it's reasonably assumed: science, medicine, academic studies. For those categories, you can generally say your word in an English accent, which might not be quite exact. For example, Ilya might guess 'hypertonia' instead of 'hypertension.'
(When I was learning Turkish, we would guess at 50-cent words by saying the French word in a Turkish accent - our prof was really mad about how often it worked lol)
adding on the cognate subject - I don’t know how often we’re writing Ilya interacting with other Russian ESL folks, but when I was learning german with my sibling, it made me SO MAD that they were so much better than me at guessing which words were gonna be cognates. (In retrospect, it’s absolutely because they knew Latin, and you can guess which English words are going to be german words by subtracting the Latin ones) but I didn’t figure this out at the time and I was so pissed off, bc they weren’t BETTER than me they were just a better guesser and it was fooling EVERYONE.
The other critical thing about guessing at cognates is that sometimes you’re Wrong. At which point you’ve said a word in one language pronounced like the other, and absolutely no one knows what you’re trying to say.
please correct me here if i'm wrong but i tutor ESL speakers and, as an extension of unfamiliar vocab, i've noticed that for irregular verbs, people often resort to an -ed structure any time the past participle is necessary (if they don't know the word)

my most controversial opinion yet is that if shane is underreacting or being a bad bf by "letting hayden treat ilya badly" then ilya is just as bad
mind you, ilya's canonical best friend is an explicit, known bigot who actively made players like shane feel unsafe (idc if he's gay, he was exactly the kind of guy shane was afraid of pre-coming out + by context and social circle was 1000% racist, reid just dgaf about poc)
disclaimer: i believe in redemption, but even if troy changes, as someone who's been in shane's shoes my partner being friends with them so openly without any personal apology or consideration would crush me
the reality is y'all just don't care so at least don't argue "ilya would never let his friends treat shane like that" because his best friend did (he wasn't there to stop it but he befriended him after the fact which imo is worse)
I do love how despite Ilya being the one in active mental health treatment and having Romance Protagonist levels of insane trauma background Shane is 1000000% the crazier one between them. Like Ilya’s done shockingly well considering and sure he’s got some abandonment issues and some insecurities but he’s basically very functional and aware of his triggers. Shane I think would actually do a murder suicide in the right circumstances. Not shitpost Shane like canon Shane
I'd get it if Hayden did have Shane's back but he doesn't. Like at all. He actively despises Ilya and the only thing he says when Shane is being accused of game fixing (a big fucking deal, he could lose his entire career over accusations like that) is "I know it's gross but he's still our captain". some ally.
you also need to remember that there are a lot of other factors, and fear is one of them. its actually a huge part of it. hayden would face backlash as well for sticking up for shane.
by the long game, it’s been three years and the dynamics have already shifted. the voyagers have already shown their true colors.
the nhl is a very toxic environment. hayden is also scared in that situation and while yes, it would be nice for him to be brave, not everyone is like that. its easy to say that you’d be the one to say “fuck it” and stick up for shane, but is hayden that brave? in a locker room full of toxic hockey players? no, of course not.
Much like the rest of the fandom I am obsessed with the nickname Shanebug. Thank you to whoever created it, I love you!
I like to think that Shane was given the nickname by David. When he was a toddler Shane was obsessed with any and every type of bug. He’d make David and Yuna take him in the garden all the time to dig for worms or look at the flowers to see if there were any bees. But his absolute favourite were ladybugs leading David to coin the nickname Shanebug.
Obviously once hockey took over his life Shane kind of forgot about his bug obsession. But once he gets settled living in Ottawa with Ilya he starts to pick it back up.
When Shane and Ilya went round to his parents for dinner he offhandedly mentioned that he was planning on adding some plants to the garden so more insects and bugs would visit. And David goes suddenly silent and starts to get teary.
David: Oh Shanebug is back
Ilya: Shanebug, what is a Shanebug?
This leads to Yuna getting out all Shane’s toddler pictures showcasing him holding a ladybug in his hands, him covered in mud pointing at a worm with the biggest grin on his face and him cross eyed as a butterfly lands on his nose. Ilya’s favourite though is a photo of Shane dressed up as a ladybug for his third birthday, antennas and all, that he gushes over.
Ilya is so besotted by the idea of Shanebug that he orders a gazillion different types of flowers and plants to give his husband the bug haven of his dreams (just as long as there are no spiders).
this might be the most controversial thing i’ve ever fucking said but i love hayden pike, and one of the reasons for that is because i’ve BEEN in shane’s position before with my best friend being hayden. we’ve been friends for 10 years, he outed me twice (both by accident) and we still live together. sometimes its way fucking worse from an outsiders perspective. and this might just be me, but it’s not that bad.
im talking book hayden here, we haven’t gotten much from show hayden so i’m not speaking about him. we’ll probably get something closer to show svetlana to expand his character.
hayden isn’t this fucking monster that some of y’all make him out to be. is he the perfect ally? no. but he’s the only person who’s actually had shane’s back in the books. okay so he hates ilya at first, but that’s because when you only know someone’s surface level that’s the ONLY opinion you’re going to get. building a friendship takes time, and in the long game we see that hayden and ilya’s friendship grows. they do spend time together, hayden trusts ilya with his kids. he lets ilya carry his wife when she’s hurt. the banter they have isn’t malicious in the same way it was when they started. their friendship just looks different.
and yall gotta remember that environment is a huge factor here. shane is notoriously a “bad gay”. they spend their entire lives with locker room culture and not being exposed to queer culture, what language to use, etc. arguably they’re ALL ignorant because they don’t know. they’re all fumbling around and trying to do what’s right but also fighting back against what they’ve been taught and surrounded with their entire lives.
and you might say “oh well they can google things, the internet is free”. yeah it is, but also they’re all the types who don’t explore outside of what’s in their daily lives. if they don’t see it, it doesn’t exist. a LOT of people are like this.
this isn’t even a stab in the dark, most of us are the opposite personality types to these millionaire athletes. we do care about things that go on around us, and a lot of online culture is queer. sometimes we project onto characters and assume that they’re like us. fiction or not hayden isn’t a bad person.
it’s so subtle but hayden is a character who grows. and growing takes TIME. i can guarantee hayden will show up more in unrivaled and we’ll probably see more growth from his character there as well.
anyway that was my rant. if yall come at me with death threats again im blocking you.

I see that not everyone likes hayden that much, and I think that's valid because I'm kind of neutral on him myself, but you have to admit that there is no more classic combination than an autistic guy who usually forgets to bother making friends and a guy so aggressively chipper that many people probably find him a little annoying if they spend too long with him. I saw someone say that their friendship is based around standing next to each other. I think they probably meant that as a criticism, but like. yeah? they have hockey in common, and aside from that, shane can straight up just stand there because hayden will do 80% of the work, leaving shane with relatively few opportunities to fuck up. and shane mostly doesn't mind hayden's weirdly strident vibe, and doesn't complain about it even when he does, so hayden has a buddy he can be a lot with. imperfect but practical social arrangement for both of them tbh I have zero questions about why this guy is here
a hollanov video goes viral and it’s filmed by a pedestrian where shane was carrying two grocery bags while ilya walked behind him trying to grab one of the bags but shane kept moving it out of his grasp and they appeared to have a very heated argument. and then suddenly shane moved one bag to the other hand and grabbed ilya’s hand and dragged him along. they appeared to still be arguing but ilya had stopped trying to steal one of the grocery bags.
anyway the internet was cackling tf up and calling ilya shane’s princess and making memes about his grabby hands. ilya’s pouting to shane about it, who kisses his pout and says, “well everyone knows you have a husband who spoils you and takes care of you, is that so bad?” and ilya begrudgingly says “no, it is not.” “okay then.”
honestly the reason i like shayden friendship so much boils down to the fact that his only deep connection being ilya and no one else Truly Knowing Him is fucking depressing
shane and ilya definitely caused some divorces; "I need someone who looks at me like shane and ilya look at eachother" "idk I get annoyed by my husband but shane and ilya spend 24 hours together A DAY and still want more" "ilya showed me the car shane bought for him and how he had to bid for it and restore it and drive 4 hours to get it and I dont remember the last time my husband bought me anything" "my wife just gets annoyed when I talk about hockey and yes i know it's my job but it's my life! hollander and rozanov watch tape together literally holding hands and she won't even come to games" "he never knows what I'm talking about or want and I have to spell out EVERYTHING and once I saw shane and ilya talk telepathically!!!! they didn't even say anything but they knew and I really want that"
they're horrified when someone tells them, "yeah things weren't so great and then we saw you two together and realized we never had that"
Sometimes I think about the fact that almost every single person who found out about Shane and Ilya felt the need to ask Shane "him? really? he's the one you want to be with?"
I think about how Ilya has had to make his way through life mostly on his own since he was twelve years old, about the, how he moved to a new country as a teenager and was immediately thrust in front of a camera without knowing the language or how to cope with his newfound fame. I think about the preconceived notions of Russians and how, in the absence of being able to accurately communicate (both because of the language barrier and his repressive upbringing), Ilya decided to or was forced to lean into that stereotype. I think about how soft Ilya allows himself to be with Shane, about how he takes care of him, about how silly and goofy he can be, how he's sometimes just a grown kid, how other times he's the only person who can shut Shane's brain of. I think about how kind he is, how caring, how deeply he feels, how incredibly empathetic he is. I think about how wildly Shane loves him. How there literally never could have been anyone else. I think about how incredibly hurtful it is that no one trusts Shane to make his own decisions about his own fucking life and how much it hurts seeing the coldness the world regards his partner with. I think about Shane getting home and walking straight into Ilya's arms, after having to (once again) justify his love for the best man he's ever known, allowing himself to take comfort in his warm embrace, even when it feels to Shane like he should be the one providing both comfort and shelter.
I think about the surety Shane would feel when thinking to himself, "yes. Him. No one else."

Shane doesn’t realize he looks Like That because, despite being ranked as #1 Hottest Player in the MHL and getting numerous sponsorships, he thinks “it’s not like I get treated any differently in my daily life because of my looks, people aren’t throwing themselves at me left and right, so it must not be a big deal.”
But the thing is, people DO throw themselves at Shane left and right, he just doesn’t realize it.
The Voyagers are at a club and girls are eyeing him like the last steak in a tiger enclosure, but Hayden is about to bang his head on the table because Shane is in his usual Captain mode and paying zero attention to the girls. A few of the bolder ones approach him but he’s like “Hi, can I help you?” and “oh sorry, I’m on duty right now, I can’t leave my team” and Hayden gives up, he just can’t anymore. Jackie will need to step up and find this man a girl cuz Shane ain’t gonna do it on his own.
At brunch with Rose, the waiter is checking him out hardcore and smiling flirtatiously. Rose teases him about it, and Shane is like “???? He’s just doing his job? Isn’t it his job to be friendly?”
Years later, Hayden and Rose are trading war stories of Shane being oblivious to human attraction and Ilya’s just like, *shrug* you just need to be clear and direct with him, and Rose and Hayden both stare at him like “what do you mean?”
And that’s how they learn that the way you get through to Shane about your intentions is you have to jerk off at him while looking him in the eye.
Just started reading you get what you paid for can I kiss your beautiful brain
Awwwwww thank you so much!! I’ll take all the brain kisses you’d be willing to give ❤️❤️❤️❤️
