I think a lot of people want Harris to be a six pack abs type guy because Troy is canonically a pro athlete and a smokeshow. There’s a scene early on in “Role Model” where Troy is with Ottawa on a visit to his hometown of Vancouver. His dad Curtis Barrett has brought some business acquaintances to meet his pro athlete son (Curtis uses his son being an NHL star as leverage in his construction business).
Curtis is being an asshole as usual. Troy notices that Curtis and his buddies all have the same look to them. Fiftysomething men who were once athletic and have now settled into middle aged flabbiness. Troy figures he’ll look exactly like them in thirty years. He has no illusions that youth, beauty and fitness are eternal.

I hold these truths about the canon GCU to be self-evident:
Hayden Pike is a loving friend. But he is also sometimes an asshole.
Shane likes that.
Ilya Rozanov is a loving and loveable human being. But he IS also an asshole.
Shane REALLY likes that.
Ilya only consistently chirps the players he thinks are worth his time.
Ilya's recurring chirps are a game of opposites. (Ex: Hunter is hot and who everyone talks about when they aren't talking about Ilya or Shane = Hunter is old and on his way out)
Ilya's chirp for Hayden wouldn't occur to him if Hayden weren't on the first line of a cup-winning team.
BUT, after a reheat of the HR book, I've had a thought about "the 15th best Montreal Metro" that I hadn't considered before.
Maybe it's not Hayden's skills so much that Ilya is chirping... it's how much Hayden cares about the recognition of his skills.
And, seriously, if that IS the point, then it makes Ilya's constant needling about how Hayden can't play good hockey even more clever and funny.
I had this thought because, in HR, Shane reflects in chapter 6 or 7 about he doesn't usually get close to teammates because they see him as different from them because of skill (on top of his already being "different" in ways they both do and do not know about, I'm sure, but Shane doesn't directly think this here), and throughout both HR and TLG we see that. His team doesn't ever try to hype Shane up for a win or reassure him about a loss. Like, at best, THE Shane Hollander must be above needing that or, at worst, they don't see why they should be the one providing that. (And it's not just a 'he's the captain, he's the hype man' thing either because we see how Marly is there for Ilya, his captain, in the show.)
Only Hayden and JJ does those things.
Shane specifically names a feeling his teammates have towards him that keeps him from getting close as jealousy, and we clearly see that that isn't a problem with Hayden. He grumbles at the aquarium when those girls don't recognize him, but it's clearly not serious to him and Shane is perfectly at ease. There's the sense that this happens often but neither make a deal of it or seem anything but amused or, in Hayden's case, mildly annoyed, maybe.
So, one of the main things that started Shane's friendship with Hayden and keeps it strong is that Hayden doesn't have an ego about stuff like that.
This would make Ilya's chirping make more sense because it's kind of a shot in the dark to tease a 3 time cup winning player about being a bad player like he might be insecure about being a good player, much less continuing to do so once he realizes the Metros almost all think they're as good as they are even without Shane. BUT if Ilya knows this about Hayden through Shane, it makes the chirp not about Hayden's skills but about Hayden's FEELINGS about his skills and rank and all that. Things Hayden likely KNOWS is a problem between Shane and the other guys.
This would make the chirp really clever too, and make sense of why Hayden never argues the point, because if he did he would be proving that he DOES care how people see his skills.
Maybe I'm overreacting to this realization or making too much out of the distinction here, but I just can't help cracking up thinking about Hayden laughing to Shane, later, when they're alone, after the first time Ilya chirps him as being "15th best", like, 'dude, i have more cups than him, that is so stupid' and Shane thinking nothing of explaining that Ilya is really just picking at how chill Hayden is about whether or not people think he's good. And Hayden laughing at first, because what a weird, stupid chirp... and then his face going blank as he realizes no. It's actually a GENIUS chirp. Because Hayden can't say anything about it without making it look like he really ISN'T chill.
THE THOUSAND YARD STARE AS HE REALIZES ILYA HAS DEVISWD THR PERFECT CHIRP SPECIFICALLY FOR HIM THAT HE CAN NEVER DIRECTLY REFUTE.
Honestly, his low level quasi-rage at Ilya until they get to actually spend time together and such is so valid 😂
Hollanov lie detector interview where Ilya begs beforehand to be allowed to ask every Rose Landry comparison he’s ever been insecure about, and he totally plays it out like he’s joking (he’s not).
Shane is like no! It’s embarrassing! And this is public! And you wouldn’t make me actually do that to Rose would you? You know the answer, I’m gay!
Only Rose thinks the whole thing is hilarious and gives Shane the go ahead so there’s no real reason to resist Ilya’s begging anymore, still he holds out to the day before the interview.
“Fine! Fine! You can ask about Rose, but I get to ask about anything I want too!” And Ilya’s like yes yes of course my love. His boring Shane would hardly ask anything damning.
Fast forward to the day of the interview Shane is fondly exasperated with Ilya’s Rose questions, and Ilya is being a cocky bastard so happy with how it played out.
Until they switch sides and Shane breaks out his first question:
“Is it or is it not true that despite famously calling Scott Hunter ‘a nearly extinct fossil’ you think he’s hot?” The blood drains from Ilya’s face pretty quickly after that.

after they’re married shane starts therapy and treating his eating disorder. now he’s still eating healthy but he also can open a exception when he’s eating out with ilya or Bood’s BBQ. and now with shane eating carbs like a normal person, he’s also gaining more weight and getting way more muscular. he’s getting bigger. bigger chest, bigger thighs, bigger ass. and ilya, god help him, it’s like christmas everyday. his hot husband is even hotter now and it’s bad cus when he sees shane in his tiny tight short shorts he has to restrain himself in order to not pounce shane immediately.

- claims shane’s eating habits are normal

i once saw a tweet criticizing hr by saying it’s a gay relationship with an asian man so you know who the woman is and it woke me up to where im a little embarrassed to admit being a fan. i love hudcon etc but i hate the twitter fandom space and people like this commenter who are so dense and racist that they make everyone look bad. it’s exhausting to be in any of those spaces where you’re thinking am i the only normal one here? it’s also embarrassing to admit i didn’t realize the shortcomings of the source material until i’ve had it pointed out to me, but then there’s some people who have it pointed out and continue to spew their rhetoric with no shame.
i wanted to have some discussion going and feel like a lot more people on here are more normal aka not racist and hateful.

since we've all been very mean to shane, i do feel the need to also be nice to shane, and if jackie does indeed enjoy cooking, i totally buy her viewing shane's allergies as a challenge to work around (that's how i feel when i cook for friends with allergies. ah. you have given me Puzzle. time to use kitchen skills and Solve Puzzle.), and it makes me SO soft to think about shane going over to their house for the first time expecting to either have nothing or have something he's going to have to gently turn down because he doesn't know if it's safe.

i'm just feeling extremely emotional about shane getting to experience someone not only not viewing these restrictions as an annoying problem but as a puzzle to work out.
