even though i generally disliked people in the trees i feel like it achieves something of what rf kuang's babel tried to with much more effectiveness. granted i havent finished babel but im talking mainly abt the footnotes + the theme of colonisation. the footnotes in babel (so far) feel less so like a satire/commentary on academia more like notes for the author to remind herself to come back and add those elements in properly. also the framing of the story doesnt really track with it having footnotes like what am i supposed to be reading that has these comments? It doesn't have the register of non fiction or of a historical text. tpitt for all its horrors does at least read like that insufferable evil bastard scientist's real self indulgent memoir

Who do you believe to be the most misunderstood character in the secret history and why?

Personally, I think Francis is the most misunderstood one, but The Twins come close.

People tend to glaze over the fact that Francis is quite the flawed person, and a very bad one at that.

He seems to get watered down to his sexuality and dramatics, and I think people tend to ignore the bad parts of his character because of that. Francis is a predator, and has taken advantage of Charles and Richard when drunk. He is also a snarky person, and is said to have the capability to be rude.

People also often gloss over the fact he has no interest in doing anything for himself, but rather expects others to cater to him. When his grandfather threatens him with cutting him off, he doesn't even think about getting a job to support himself, but instead decided to marry a woman whom he does not love, and even complains about, despite her being seemingly nice.

In the cases in which he apologises to Richard consistently, he does not do it out of sorrow for Richard, but rather to quell his own anxieties.

He has also showed a lack of empathy for the farmer and Bunny, and was only concerned about how it would affect his life, rather than anyone else's.

Francis is often written off as the gay, sassy twink, when in reality he is a deeply flawed, intelligent, and in alot of cases, rude character. He has a severe lack of empathy for anyone other than himself, he is a predator, and selfish.

Using this post as a jumping off point to talk about how the fandom mischaracterizes Francis, and why it’s typically rooted in homophobia:

Francis is a gay man so the fandom tends to feminize him, and because they see him as feminine—which they equate with goodness, and masculinity with badness—they erase his faults in favor of victimizing him!

The fandom does something similar with Camilla because she’s a woman, which is rooted in misogyny.

I’ll expand on this later!
