witch hat spoilers
I feel bad for the Silverwood...... Its lore is all about falling in love with people. It integrates with its host, restores lost abilities. It flourishes in comfort and ease.
What a way to end, when you're ready. Tree burial is already a thing in our world. But to become a tree and give the gift of magic ink, of creation and everything magic is to the people of this world.
It's rough that such a gift is so cruel.
when you look at that boy it feels like something inhuman looks right back at you...
I adore the idea of the parasite, to a degree, being a sentient being. It knows what it wants and it waits until it can finally weave its roots around it. This is about 'jealousy', but not that of Qifrey, but of the third 'person' in this relationship.
Qifrey crying because the girls wanted him and Olruggio to try the meals they made themselves (which is cute as hell) but he's too chocked up atm but that doesn't stop Olly from eating first lmao
Omigawd he has SOMETHING IN HIS EYE
Qifrey should have an affair. That'd keep him on his toes.
Have an affair with Deanreldy.

Huge fan of Qifrey's reasoning for becoming a teacher cos it DO be like that. If teaching were the most well-resourced job in the world, it would still be Harrowing. It's been years and I'm still harrowed. Lying awake sketching out conversations and lectures and explanations. Worry worry worry.
And this 'oops it's joyful actually' yeh sure it's joyful like, i dunno, basejumping. Egg-carving. It's joyful but joy and anxiety are very compatible actually.
Always on the next thing, what's down the path, where are they headed.
Then they graduate or whatever and you KEEP. WORRYING. About them. About other kids that are like them.
adults will say things like 'you've grown into a fine young adult, I don't have to worry about you' they are lying, that is not true, they are still worry worry. Not cos the kids aren't fine young adults and equal to life's tribulations but in spite of that.

idk wtf did the writers put in Kusukayo's dynamic/relationship but they just LOOK like they were meant to do laundry and taxes together
Like Kusuriuri listen to your wife, she is done with your cryptic BS
I reckon Kusuriuri is a part-time roommate sitch. Kusuriuri goes out and do Cryptic Bullshit and then comes back and they gossip over laundry and taxes. And this was the one time they actually travelled together and they don't do that any more. Sorta like an inverse Dr Who companion.
I appreciate mononoke for creating a side character so good they had to make a whole alternative setting of an old storyline just to bring her back
Brought her back twice too. I guess the boat just didn't quite get the itch. They're like, she's great and perfect in every way but actually. Actually. She should suck just a bit. As a treat.
oh also with an ink-based magic system whose lore outlaws putting it on your body directly, establishes that seals can be reused and whose antagonists wear full-body coverings, my called shot money is 100% on at least one of the forbidden magic users having magic ink tattoos, if not all of them, if not literal face tattoos to motivate the masks, manga readers I don't wanna hear the answer if you know it
Friend you have so much more faith in this story than I did at this point in proceedings.

"What do you fear the most?"
"A world in which there is no "shape", "truth", and "reason".
A world in which I am not needed."
I couldn't remember exactly what he said in this moment but it was sthm along these lines. When i first saw this scene I thought it was really interesting. We get it near the start of the anime where this mysterious and very unknown medicine peddler guy is out slaying mononoke for whatever duty bound reason. This scene comes up and he is faced with what he truly fears most in the world, even though he knows its only an illusion. "A world where there is no "shape "truth" and "reason". Which is seemingly all this guy seems to know, so practically his entire existence and identity from what we know. I was really curious as to what he was gonna fear and tbh this wasn't what i was expecting. but shed some light on his character a bit. I might be reading into this way more then it could've been intended too but it kinda seems like despite his cynical nature and kinda "tired-of-it" attitude he doesn't know anything more then this life. maybe that cause he's not human (?) seen some where people saying he (along with the rest of the medicine sellers in the universe) are Kitsune (which would makes sense with the intentional fox-featured designs) Regardless, maybe it was because he knew it was only an illusion but some ways it looks like he just embraces it. Theory - despite it being all he knows he is also so tired of it all and in some ways wishes it to end. Idk i like theorizing about this guys psychology, we don't get a lot about him and he's so aloof, i love how little the anime lets us see from his perspective.
I kind of figure it was an information gambit moreso than a genuine insecurity. The vision suggests that if there's no truth/form/regret, he wouldn't be here. Like 'hmmm I'm seeing a lot of ayakashi activity but no mononoke... There is a mononoke right. I'm not just wasting my time, right?' and then the vision is like 'yeah bro how'd you think you got here your spooky-ooky existence on this plane is contingent on there being a Guy to deal with. Obv.' and he's like 'ok cool good'.
I don't love this interpretation (mine) cos it doesn't... Add much? To his characterisation? He remains calm and detached and in control. But I also don't find there's much in the 'i fear irrelevance' version. Maybe more like. 'i fear this callout isn't actually a plumbing issue at all and I could have just stayed home'. This meeting could have been an email I didn't read.
When I first read The Rook I pictured Myfanwy Thomas Black.
Really purely on the name, I think. And despite the mirror scene laying out her features.
And it was sorta disappointing to realise she was a mousy white brunette. Fortunately my read is my own, and my Myfanwy Thomas is Black

Life is short, though I keep this from my children.
[Qifrey lifting up Coco]
Life is short, and I’ve shortened mine
in a thousand delicious, ill-advised ways,
[Qifrey and Olruggio as children]
a thousand deliciously ill-advised ways
I’ll keep from my children.
[Qifrey alone in his tower, and getting hit with lightning as he experiments with the ink bottle]
The world is at least
fifty percent terrible, and that’s a conservative
estimate, though I keep this from my children.
[A young Luluci running away from abstract, shadowy grabbing hands]
For every bird there is a stone thrown at a bird.
[Qifrey in the waterlogged coffin]
For every loved child, a child broken, bagged,
sunk in a lake. Life is short and the world
[Engendale with his slimy brimmed hat]
is at least half terrible, and for every kind
stranger, there is one who would break you,
though I keep this from my children.
[Qifrey with a peaceful expression, a herd of cattle, flying birds, and a shot of a traveling cart from behind with Qifrey and his apprentices inside]
I am trying
to sell them the world.
[The atelier and the field around it]
Any decent realtor,
walking you through a real shithole, chirps on
about good bones: This place could be beautiful,
right?
[Qifrey showing Coco the windowway in a shower of flower petals.]
You could make this place beautiful.
End ID]
Have you met my sons

just got done reading the rose field... that moment where pan is eavesdropping on olivier like "what a strange language he's speaking... kind of like french... but also italian... i can just barely... make out... the nuances of this barbarian tongue..." bestie he's literally swiss
Oh shit I just thought he had like a fun smash-up language with his daemon. You know like how twins do sometimes. I was like 'huh why isn't that a feature of more person-daemon relationships??'
Bestie He's Swiss.
I'm not a particularly good story teller. I struggle to condense my understanding of events down to a 1-dimensional string of sounds- even with the bonus .5 dimensions of wild gesticulation.
I get sidetracked. I'm completionist. I know I can't articulate in finite time the myriad of factors that went into That event having exactly This outcome, but I try anyway. The most advanced technique I employ in dodging these issues to say 'because Reasons', thereby lampshading the things I'm omitting sufficiently that I can forgive myself- barely- for moving on with the story.
Anyway. It's book 6 of a double-trilogy.
There are Gryphons now.
