the zendaya thing isnt even a new phenomenon by any means!! the article mentions margot robbie wearing the taj mahal diamond as well, and in addition to that i also want to remind people that diljit dosanjh's request to wear the patiala necklace for the 2025 met gala was denied by cartier because they said it was in a museum and could not be loaned. however they had no issues at all loaning it to emma chamberlain, a white woman, for the 2022 met gala, while they turned down the request of a punjabi man who wanted it to honor his heritage.

this behavior is nothing new. the global south and everything in it - the people, the culture, our heritage - is seen as nothing more than a decoration or commodity to colonizers. i don't even need to bring up the koh i noor or the entire british museum; these examples are recent and egregious enough on their own.

of course this is not to imply that any of the people involved here - zendaya, margot robbie, or emma chamberlain - had any sort of malicious intentions. but the ignorance is just as bad in my opinion. the ignorance is just as harmful, if not more. because it means we are not even an afterthought. it means that the real people and histories and heritages of the global south do not even register when these people are putting together looks for their movie premiers and met gala appearances. everything is just reduced down to a shiny piece of jewelry whose history they need not bother with. it's just a continued reminder of the way colonization affects us all even long after independence, of how barely-healed wounds keep being reopened even decades later. even now, we are being denied connections to our histories and heritages while they are freely being given out to those that have nothing to do with it and don't care for it. and i'm sick of it.

my apolitical border patrol game's "craniometric measurement" minigame you HAVE to do to figure out if someone is a terrorist demon is garnering a lot of criticisms already answered by the "apolitical border patrol game" part and i really feel like theyre focusing too much on the craniometric measuring minigame and not all the time i spent coding the minigame where your commanding officer gives you a "foot-job" (cause this is a freaky game!) and asks you to put your genetically pure babies in her for the glory of the state. i didnt even use ai im ANTI AI i hired an artist why is everyone made at me???? did you want it to be more solarpunk????

ive become the friend that's too woke after saying it's weird that anomaly games are experiencing a cross-breeding with border control games without addressing the fascist politics being critiqued by the border control games so we end up with stuff like "animal hospital", a game where you work in a hospital, and have to take patients, but some of the patients that come in seeking aid are actually eldritch monsters, pretending to be patients so they can prey on the weak and vulnerable.

and isnt that just so fucking topical. "yeah there's an evil other that preys on the vulnerable. and they look and act exactly like everyone else until you inspect them closely on a camera and the true nature of the monster is revealed. and even though they attack people on the street all you have to do is refuse them service and they leave on their own" just let me call ICE on them at that point

#cosmic/eldritch horror in general has an unchecked xenophobia problem by nature of its originator being lovecraft #who was racist even for the era and a large portion of his writing + the foundational texts are a result of him being afraid of immigrants #this is a recurring issue for me for even a lot of eldritch horrors i really like because they simply did not unpack fear of the other #and the underlying sentiment remains. pairing that with uncritical border control games is truly like #the worst decision you could make. tapped out of engaging with them completely after people acted like That's Not My Neighbor was good #not only is it not scary or superficially interesting to look at it is completely lacking in story and the primary gameplay mechanic is like #straight up just telling the military to kill them like as close as you can get to calling ICE without actually making a political statement #xenofeels is going to be bad too for sure. there is no way that's building up to anything politically cogent or worthwhile WRAP IT UP #+ honestly i'm probably being more charitable toward border control games than i actually feel. papers please is the closest #one has gotten to being good but that is also like a toothless 1984-style dystopia that seems to be designed entirely off of like #soviet propaganda posters. that one just happens to be compelling in a 'moral choices in video games' way if not #actual political commentary. i believe someone could make a good one but if they have i haven't seen it yet 😢
