Monte Serrat (pt.2) The view during good weather is amazing, from the mountains and rivers to the north to the ocean to the south. The observation decks offer a breathtaking 360-degree view of the city of Santos, but you can also see parts of the municipalities of São Vicente, Cubatão and Guarujá. The chapel of Nossa Senhora do Monte Serrat, was built in 1599, by order of the governor Dom Francisco de Souza, a Spaniard devoted to the saints patroness of Barcelona. History records that, in 1614, when the Dutch corsair Joris von Spilbergen invaded the village, part of the population fled to the hill. When the corsairs tried to pursue them, they were buried by earth and rocks that had fallen from the mountain. Monte Serrat (pt.1) I have decided to dedicate a separate posts, mainly because of the history as well as the beauty of this place. The mountain is 147m high and can be reached by a funicular railway (Monday-Thursday 25R$, Friday-Sunday 28R$, both ways) or by climbing 402 large steps. There is also a Way of the Cross (made between 1939-1941) next to the stairs. At the top of the mountain is a old casino (not working), 424-year-old chapel and few observation decks. Now a bit of history 😊 Three months after the inauguration of the funicular and ballroom, the Monte Serrat complex building began to house, in September 1927, a casino - it operated until 1946, when the federal government banned gambling in the country. The old town of Santos (pt.3) Walking towards Monte Serrat (which I will show you in the next post) on the way we pass the very nicely restored Câmara Municipal de Santos (Santos City Hall) building. Walking further along you will encounter numerous shops, most of them are just the common ones with nothing special in it. My attention was drawn to the statue shop, where you can find Christian and Umbanda statues side by side (the blue figure is Orixá Iemanjá Rainha do Mar). Reaching Praça dos Andradas on the right we will have Teatro Guarany, which celebrated its 141st birthday this year. Teatro Guarany was, from the beginning, a meeting place for Santos society, especially for groups interested in culture, theater, and politics. In the middle is the beautiful historic building of the Cadeia Velha de Santos (Old Jail of Santos). The whole area is beautiful, you can sit on a bench, relax, have something to eat in the nearby pubs or just enjoy the view. I ended my tour with a visit to the 18th century church (built in 1758) Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Rosário. The old town of Santos (pt.2) The next stage of our tour is the Coffee Museum. A great place to learn about the very extensive history of coffee and everything related to it. Unfortunately, most information is only available in Portuguese. In another part of the museum there are other exhibitions as well, when I was there it was about the role of women in the economy, as well as a lot of information about everyday life, clothing or behaviour in the past. Here you can know more as everything is also in English. Opening times can be found on their page @museudocafe , and tickets are priced at 10R$ per person. Inside there is also a small café and a souvenir shop. Moving through the streets, we should reach the Prefeitura de Santos (Santos City Hall) @santoscidade . In front of it, there is a very nice and well-maintained square called Praça Mauá, where various events take place, such as broadcasts of national football matches or music stages during the carnival. Using the lift in the prefecture, we can go up to the top floor, there is an observation deck, a café and often themed exhibitions. During my visit it was "José Bonifácio - Father of Ecology", private exhibition, with very professional staff who showed and explained everything. The panoramic terrace offers a very nice view of the surroundings, including part of the famous harbor. Walking along the streets I went to the famous Catedral de Nossa Senhora do Rosário. The building is truly impressive. The old town of Santos (pt.1) The Pelé Museum, next to the historic tram, is the best place to start our tour of the old town. The museum itself is certainly a very important place which every football fan must visit (everything is available in Portuguese, Spanish & English). Entry is free, but opening times sometimes change so it is worth checking first on their page @museupele . After that you can enjoy a ride on the historic tram (normal ticket cost 7 R$, you can buy it inside of Pelé Museum). Then you can walk around the old town, with a bit of luck, there might be a special event going on. In my case it was the Festival de Torresmo at Arcos Do Valongo @arcosdovalongo . There are several other similar sites in the area, such as Casa da Frontaria Azulejada, Festival Geek de Santos or Vallum Garden, so it is always worth to check them. The old town of Santos has beautiful restored buildings on one side and buildings without even a roof on the other. Beautiful townhouses, and next to them houses like from a horror movie... The incredible potential of these sites is unfortunately not being fully used. The problem for sure is that it is located on the opposite side of town, far from the beach which is a lively place. Despite its beauty, it is sadly a little bit deserted. But If you're in Santos, it's well worth to pay a visit there.

The road between São Paulo and Santos is beautiful. It's called Rodoviária dos imigrantes. Surrounded by rivers, lakes, jungle and mountains. And those banana trees growing right next to the road... Something wonderful.

Porta do Sol - Restaurante do Paquito @paquitoportadosol One of the most famous, if not the most famous restaurant in Santos. Delicious food, incredible seafood and even more wonderful history connected with this place. The king of football, Pelé, was a regular guest here, what can be seen on the wall of the building as soon as you enter the premises. Bacalhau (Cod) a Debora - fish baked in olive oil, with onions, olives, tomatoes. Amazing taste, delicate, melt-in-the-mouth, something really special. With each successive bite, you know that this is what well-cooked fish should really taste like.

Santos, one of the oldest cities in Brazil. This year it celebrated its 477th birthday. Famous for its port (131 years of continuous operation) and amazing & interesting history. For many years one of the safest cities on the map of Brazil (the recent epidemic has unfortunately messed things up a bit here). Visited by millions of tourists every year. The inhabitants of the coastal towns are called "Caiçaras". The term "caiçara" comes from the Tupi word "caá-içara", which was used to name the walls placed around the villages, including the trap made of tree branches stuck in the water to catch the fishes. It is rare to see photos from Santos from the time when it rains, as it is mainly associated with relaxing on the beach and holidays.

Santos, São Paulo The Brazilian summer is different to the one most people know. Here, the rains alternate with sunshine, but one thing remains constant: the heat.

There are days, when you need to chill out 😎

Praia de Jaguaribe - Beautiful, sandy beach, a quite & peaceful place during the week and full of live at weekends. Due to the decent size of the waves, it is one of the surfers favourite spots from the region. Often on the beach you can find Umbanda worshippers praying as pictured.

Walking through the streets of Pelourinho, it is very common to hear the sound of drums. There are many drum schools in Salvador, the most famous of which is Olodum. Olodum is an Afro-Brazilian drum school, which was founded on April 25 in 1979. Because of their history, they have even guaranteed a place during the carnival. It is interesting to note that they were the ones who played and performed in Michael Jackson's "They Don't Care About Us". If you are lucky, you can see them performing in one of the squares of Pelourinho.

Praia de Guarajuba, Bahia North of Salvador, a little before Praia do Forte. Fairly empty during the week, but busy at the weekend. Mainly because of its location, beauty and the fact that there are several sea food places with decent prices around.
