That’s probably not fair, there are plenty of reasons someone might not have been aware of the weirdness of the year. Okay, well, without doing any research, just from having lived through it, David Bowie died on January 10th and from there a lot of celebrities kept dying – older celebs generally, and from fairly common diseases, but it was a real weird vibe.
Donald Trump ran for president. There were rumors about clowns emerging from the woods to assault people, I still haven’t been able to determine if those were true. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie broke up. Donald Trump became the Republican candidate for president. Celebrities were still dying at a fairly fast clip, I think, at this point.
49 people were murdered in a shooting at gay nightclub Pulse in Orlando.
By now you could barely go a week without some thinkpiece about how weird and surreal 2016 was appearing in the media.
Pokemon Go was released. That was kind of nice. Cubs won the World Series, that was nice too. But also weird, because that hadn’t happened since 1908.
The last VCR ever was made. The Brexit referendum passed. An alligator ate a toddler at Disneyworld. A lot of people really lost their shit over whether or not a zoo was justified in shooting a gorilla that had grabbed a toddler that had got into his enclosure.
Donald Trump was elected president due in part to extensive Russian tampering in the election. That gets us to November and I stopped paying attention to the news after that for a while.
I mean, a lot of good shit happened in 2016 as well. Off the top of my head, there’s an Ebola vaccine that was invented in 2016. And bad shit happens every year, weird, awful shit, so 2016 was probably a great example of confirmation bias. But for the vast majority of Americans, at the least, all we could say to each other all year long was “Weird fucking year!”
