"The Draconic Compendium" by Kaela - TF!Pyro Lore Book
The connection between a rider and a dragon is beyond sacred. While the connection that is formed from a hatching ritual tethers a pair for all time, that bond is simply the first step in that complicated eternity.
Raising a dragon and mastering magic isn’t a linear process in the slightest, as there are several paths, hurdles, pitfalls and shortcuts along several paths with no destination.
The archives suggest that the majority of recorded mages who bond with a dragon went on to pursue all knowledge available to them throughout the vast arcane libraries of Terraventus.
Several others with some notable examples opted to pursue humble existences, avoiding the pursuit of arcane excellence entirely while retiring to a less testing role in a far corner of the realm with their dragon, each one growing to a size and strength unlike the ones kept by the academic mages which grew powerful and wise, although not as big.
In my time as a rider thus far, I have dug through the finest most well kept vaults, and the dingiest crypts alike in search of an answer to my curiosity. What is the purpose of dragons, and us as their riders?
Despite my years of tireless research, I am still without answers as to who or what created the dragons, nor what soul was brave enough to first bond with them.
As a scholar of draconics, I am sure of nothing other than our bond which is shared by every rider I have met, and all who have been documented. Thus, I am left to believe only what I know is true, we must each strive to strengthen our bond as that is all we can do with certainty.
The only physical evidence of the bond is the magic we are each granted access to. This manifestation of power is mighty, yet physical forma are often left unchanged. In that same vein, dragons are also left unchanged by humans bar perhaps a saddle or occasionally armour.
Without a dragon, a rider is certainly powerful yet is vulnerable to mortal coils, and without a rider a dragon is left directionless in a world that is vast and tiny beneath its wings, yet is hostile to its natural ferocity.
In my days as a junior student, while combing through the archives I found what could hardly be considered a whole book – closer to bound scraps of rough parchment from before the academy was even constructed.
Despite it being in a language incomprehensible to me at first, through thorough translation I came to understand that it told the tale of a rider and their dragon with a bond never before seen. Unfortunately, only the beginning and the end were preserved.
I spent many sleepless nights translating the text, all the while the rest of the fourfold believed I was driving myself to madness. There was something at first I did not understand.
Partway through the text somewhere in the missing section, there stopped being mention of two beings – only one.
There was no mention of a tragic death or of a separation, rather it detailed a being that was separate from the rider and dragon yet described characteristics of both, and like its presence was to be expected, like it was there since the start of the story.
It was over a drink with the dragon mage that it dawned on me. The rider and their dragon had not left the story, they had continued to live on through this new character in a physical form that was unlike what had come before and yet was solely inspired from traits of both of them.
The final chapter detailed an entity with wings that shook the earth with clawed hands with the intelligence to handle a blade. A roar that could rattle forests with a voice that could convey the creature’s thoughts.
Not quite a dragon yet certainly far from human, but humanoid for certain.
The dragon and the rider had obtained a new form. One smarter and stronger than either of them could be while they were on their own.
The methods by which they had obtained the form were not in the included text, perhaps that is for the best. Whether this is a cautionary fable, a history or a theory I cannot be certain.
Perhaps it is best that way, for I have far more pressing matters to attend to in dire times such as these.
