Stewyβs whistle was low, appreciative, and just a little smug. βMarla Carranza.β His eyes flicked down the length of her dress before he leaned in for a hug, the scent of expensive cologne clinging to him. βKendall told me you were coming, but I didnβt believe him at all.β
Marla was wearing a dark grayish blue dress with a V-neckline that showed off just the right amount of cleavage. Sheβd gotten real pretty for this. Her first time seeing the family after such a long time, she had to leave a great impression.Β
Marla let out a soft laugh, taking a slow sip of her champagne. βYeah, honestly, Iβm still surprised I accepted hisβ¦ uh, invite.βΒ
βAh, see, thatβs what I love about you, Marla. Always full of bad decisions.β His grin was sharp, teasing, but there was an undercurrent of something else, something closer to curiosity.
Marla and Stewy had met during her internship at Waystar, when she became friends with Kendall, which entailed her partying every weekend at different high-end bars and clubs.Β
Stewy and Marla hit it off immediately. Stewy was a flirty guy, and there was nothing Marla found more fun than being able to flirt back without consequences. Of course, they did date for a while but it was nothing really serious. They both knew that.
She raised a brow. βIs that supposed to be a compliment?β
βAbsolutely.β
The two of them stood at the edge of the gala, away from the cameras, the polished floor glinting beneath the chandeliers. The room was buzzing with business talk. On the opposite corner of the room, Marla recognised Connor, who appeared to be yelling at a server, clearly stressed out. Sheβd never really connected with him like sheβd done with the rest of the Roys, mainly due to him being sort of an outsider inside both the family and the company. And what benefit would Marla obtain from buddying up with the interloper? Marla was always thinking about the benefit.Β
Stewy followed her gaze, scoffing softly. βPoor guy. Always trying so hard to be relevant.β
Marla huffed a quiet laugh, though she couldnβt entirely disagree. Before she could say anything, she felt his eyes shift back to her, assessing. βYouβre not like him,β he said, voice lower now, more deliberate. Like heβd been waiting for an opening. Like she was the most interesting thing in the room.
βIβm not so sure.β Marla turned her eyes back over to Stewy. βOne might say Iβm just as desperate for relevancy as Connor Roy is.β
Stewy shrugged. βAt least you arenβt so obvious with it.β he swirled his drink. βSoβ¦ you working for Logan now?β
Marlaβs lips quirked into a knowing smile. βWhat makes you say that?β
βBecause only people who work for Logan voluntarily walk into these fucking shark-infested waters.β His gaze sharpened. βAnd you donβt strike me as someone who came here just for the champagne.β
Marla held his stare, unblinking. βMaybe I just missed the family.β
That earned a quiet chuckle. βRight. And Iβm here for the charity.β He tilted his head, assessing her like she was a stock on the rise. βSo whatβs your angle?β
She smirked. βI think I might just be trying too hard to be relevant.β
Stewy chuckled softly before leaning in just slightly. βIβll say this, Marlaβwhatever youβre up to, you better be damn sure itβs worth it.β
There was no warning in his voice, just amusement, the kind that came from watching someone step into the lionβs den on purpose.
Marla just smiled, lifting her glass in an unbothered toast. βCheers to bad decisions, then.β
Their glasses clinked, but before either could say another word, Stewyβs gaze flicked over her shoulder. His smirk widened, just a little.
βWell, well. Looks like youβve got company.β
Marla turned just in time to see Shiv Roy approaching, alone. Behind her, Marla could grasp the image of her husband, whom she had only met in pictures, staring at Shivβs back.Β
Stewy exhaled, already taking a step back. βAnd thatβs my cue to leave.β
βCoward,β Marla muttered.
βStrategist,β he corrected with a wink before slipping away, leaving her alone with Shiv.
And just like that, the air shifted.
Effortlessly poised, champagne flute in hand, she moved with the kind of confidence that came from knowing she was the smartest person in the room, or at least believing she was. The moment Marla locked eyes with her, it became clear: this wasnβt just a casual hello.
Marla straightened her posture, letting a slow smile curve her lips. βWhy, hello Shiv.β
Shivβs red lips parted into something that resembled a smile, but there was a sharpness to it. βMarla. Didnβt expect to see you here.β
βDidnβt expect to be here,β Marla replied easily, taking a sip of her drink. βBut you know how it is, free booze, good lighting, rich men being miserable. Hard to say no.β
Shiv hummed, tilting her head slightly. βRight. And what exactly are you doing here?β
Straight to the point. Marla almost laughed. βOh well, you knowβ¦β Marla played with the bracelet laying on her wrist. The situation made her nervous. She had always been intimidated by Shiv, even when theyβd been best friends. βWanted to see the umβ¦ new steps of the company. I am a board member after all.β
Shivβs gaze flickered over her, quick and assessing. Sizing her up. Then, as if remembering something, she let out a soft chuckle. βGod. Kendall must be feeling sentimental.β
Marlaβs brows furrowed. βIs that what you think this is?β
βIsnβt it?β Shiv countered smoothly. βYou show up after, what? Years? And suddenly, youβre sitting at his table, lookingβ¦β Her eyes swept over Marlaβs dress, a flicker of something unreadable in her expression. ββ¦expensive.β
Marla smiled, unbothered. βOh but I always look like this. Donβt you remember Shivvy?β
Shivβs lips pressed together, amusement barely masking the tension beneath. For a second, she looked like she might push further, ask more, dig deeper. And for a moment, Marla thought she might actually say something real.
After all, this was Shiv. Her Shiv. The girl she used to share cigarettes with outside of shitty college parties, both of them cackling about which idiot was going to fail the next exam. The one she stayed up with in their dorm, ranting about boys and family and futures that were supposed to be theirs for the taking.
But that was a long time ago.
And now, here they were, talking like strangers with knives behind their backs.
βI should go find Tom.β Shiv finally let her gaze move from Marlaβs eyes, hesitating before doing so, something unspoken in her expression. βBut it wasβ¦ uh, nice seeing you Marla.β
βNice seeing you too.β Marla had turned back to the table, taking out her phone before she suddenly overheard Kendallβs voice from behind her.
βHey Shiv.β
βNice work, bro.β
Marla barely turned her head as Kendall slid into view, noticing how Shivβs lips were already curling into a smirk.
Kendall blinked, caught off guard. βWhat do you mean?β
Shiv took a slow sip of her drink, nudging towards the blonde girl sitting at the same table as Marla. βFucking the talent.β
Kendallβs face barely shifted, but something in his posture stiffened. βHey, come on.β
βNo, itβs okay,β Shiv continued, voice light but razor-sharp. βYouβre fucking ATN. ATN is fucking me. Itβs a little clusterfuck.β
Marla watched Kendallβs jaw tighten.Β
βBut hey! Marla is here too! Maybe you can turn it into a threesome.β Shiv winked at him, but before he could respond, she was already turning away, leaving him standing there like a misplaced chess piece.
He exhaled sharply, running a hand down his face before his eyes finally landed on Marla.
βMarla,β he said, slow and careful, like he was testing the weight of her name after all these years.
Marla tilted her head, her smirk softening just a fraction. βKendall.β
A beat of silence. He blinked, almost like he didnβt believe she was real.
βYouβ¦β He exhaled, shaking his head. βHoly shit. Youβre actually here.β
Marla let out a soft chuckle, swirling the champagne in her glass. βYeah well, you practically begged me to make an appearance tonight.β
βYeah.β Kendall laughed. βI didβ¦ uh, have you met my date?β He pointed towards the blonde girl that Shiv had referred to just a moment ago.Β
βAnna Newman.β Her voice was sweet, but she seemed bored. She extended her hand and Marla took it, a sympathetic smile on her face.Β
βMarla Carranza.β
βHave youβ¦ uh, been having a good time?β Kendall directed the question towards Anna, sitting down as he did so.Β
βYeah. Uhβ¦ Itβs been lovely.β She displayed what was clearly a fake smile on her face. βThanks.β
βIβm glad.β Kendall turned around to look at Marla now. βSoβ¦ how are you, uh, feeling about Tuesday?β
βI already told you. Iβm fully team Kenny.β
βYeah, no, I know. Itβs just Iβveβ¦ Iβm a little bit nervous about this whole thing.β
βRightfully so. Youβre kinda going to murder your dad.β
Kendallβs smile grew. βHey, donβt say that.β Marla simply hummed as an answer.Β
Before Marla could answer, Connor suddenly appeared, his energy frayed at the edges, lowering himself to Kendallβs height. "Hey, uh, Ken? Need to talk."
Kendall barely looked at him. "Yeah, whatβs up?"
βWait, Marla? How have things been going?β Marla wished Connor hadnβt realised she was there. This many reencounters in a night were giving her a headache.
βItβs been good.β
βSo sorry about the butter.β Connor turned his attention back over to Kendall, leaving Marla confused and with no space to ask what was wrong with the butter. βYeah so, apparently dadβs going to be doing the speech now, so late change of plans, I hope thatβs cool.β
Kendall stood up in surprise, blinking.Β
βWhat?β
βWell, yeah, he just said. I guess that put a spoke in quite a few wheels, huh?β
βCon. Con.β Kendallβs voice was laced with worry as he stopped Connor from leaving. βHeβs in no fit state.β
βGotta go backstage.β Connor touched his shoulder before leaving, Kendall following after him.
Marla barely had a second to process Kendallβs abrupt exit before a voice cut in from her right, dry and unmistakably amused.
βHoly shit. Itβs alive.β
She didnβt need to turn to know who it was.
He dropped into the chair beside her like he owned it, all loose limbs and careless confidence, eyeing her over the rim of his drink.
βDid they roll out a red carpet for you, or did you just claw your way back in? Either way, congrats. Youβre like a very sexy cockroach.β
Marla let out a slow breath, turning toward him at last. Roman looked the same, somehow both sharp and disheveled, suit slightly wrinkled like heβd just rolled out of someone elseβs bed.
Her lips quirked. βThat was almost a compliment.β
βOh, yeah, I forgot to add the part where Iβm deeply, profoundly unsettled by your presence.β He gestured vaguely at her dress. βBut you do lookβ¦ hot, so at least thereβs that.β
Marla rolled her eyes, lifting her glass in mock gratitude. βGee, thanks, Rome.β
He smirked. βMm. Thatβs what I do. Boost female confidence. Iβm basically the Gloria Steinem of billionaire failsons.β
She chuckled, shaking her head. βWhereβs your date? Assuming you have one.β
Roman clicked his tongue, glancing briefly at the crowd. βOh, she was here. You just missed her.β
His tone was deliberately vague, leaving room for interpretation.Β
Marla raised a brow. βUh-huh. Did she happen to beβ¦ a real person?β
βDefine real.β He grinned. βLike, did she have a pulse? Was she tax-paying? Did she have a deep and meaningful relationship with her father? Some of those answers are yes.β
Marla smirked, leaning in slightly. βSo, translation: you scared her off.β
βI did not.β Romanβs hand fluttered to his chest in mock offense.Β
βLet me guess, she just had an urgent appointment? With a car? Going far away from you?β He shrugged. βClassic.β
βAre you projecting right now?β Roman cocked his head, eyes glinting. βWhatβs your deal here? You back for good? Or just here to haunt us like some terribly-fuckable poltergeist?β
Marla took a slow sip of her drink. βWhy? You worried?β
Roman grinned. βWorried? No. Turned on? Only in a deeply concerning, self-loathing kind of way.β
Marla exhaled a short laugh, her gaze steady. Roman was always like this, always pushing, always performing. But there was something in his eyes, beneath the smirk, that was watching her just as closely.
She set her glass down with a soft clink. βSo, is this the part where you pretend you didnβt miss me?β
Roman made a face, feigning horror. βOh God, was I supposed to? Shit. No one gave me the memo.β He leaned in, dropping his voice to a low stage whisper. βWait, do you want me to say I did? Will that make you feel all warm and gooey inside?β
Marla hummed, tilting her head as if considering it. βI think Iβd rather watch you squirm.β
Roman barked out a laugh. βMar, please. If I could be rattled by you, Iβd be dead already.β
She arched a brow. βMmm. Keep telling yourself that.β
His grin twitched, just barely, like sheβd brushed against something real. But then he was back on the offense, tilting his head, studying her with faux curiosity.
βSo, then. Who lured you out of exile? Kenny?β His smirk widened. βWait, no. Youβre too smart for that. Shiv, then? Orβ¦β his eyes flickered with amusement, βdear old dad?β
There it was. The real test.
Marla didnβt flinch. Instead, she smiled, slow and sharp. βWouldnβt you like to know?β
Roman clicked his tongue, mock-disappointed. βOof. Thatβs such a Shiv answer.β He gave her a once-over. βYou two been trading notes? I saw you talking to her just minutes before.β
βAre you stalking me Rome?β If he would tease, you could tease back. βAre you jealous that I didnβt run immediately towards you?β Her words were biting, mocking him in a fake sadness.Β
Roman clutched his chest. βChrist, Marla, do you want me to cry? Because I will. Right here. Full meltdown.β
She pretended to consider. βWould be entertaining.β
Roman pointed at her. βSee, now that? Thatβs the kind of passive-aggressive ex-girlfriend energy I live for.β
Marla just took a sip of her drink, unbothered. βWe never dated.β
βOh, we so did.β
βNo, we didnβt.β
βOkay, yeah, maybe not in the βwe are boyfriend and girlfriend and we fuckβ sense, but, likeβ¦β He made a vague, circular motion with his drink. βWe did things. We were things.β
Marlaβs smile turned sharp. βYeah, the things were...β
βHey.β Kendall slipped back into his seat beside her, his expression tight, his energy off. He barely acknowledged them, eyes fixed ahead. Whatever conversation heβd just had, it hadnβt gone his way.
βWell, what happened to you, my dear brother?β Romanβs tone was, as most of the time, mocking.
βBusiness mogul. Philanthropist.β A guy had stood up in the center of the stage, excusing Kendall out of answering. βAnd the man whose name is at the top of my checks.β
βSeems like itβs time for your daddyβs speechβΒ
βEw donβt call him my daddy.β Roman pretended to gag.Β
βLadies and gentlemen, it is my profound pleasure to introduce to you on this most auspicious occasionβ¦β
Roman let out a loud mocking yawn as the guy kept talking.Β
β... the man, the legend: Logan Roy.β
βWait, was it not supposed to be Kenny?β Roman finally sat down correctly, seemingly interested now.
βDo you care?βΒ
Roman tilted his head, considering her question. βI meanβ¦ not really. But I do love a good family betrayal. Itβs like porn for me.β
Marlaβs gaze drifted back to the stage, ignoring Romanβs comment as Logan took his place.
The applause was immediate, obedient.
Logan stood tall, his presence swallowing the room whole. Even the clinking of glasses quieted.
βAlright,β he said, tone clipped. βLetβs get on with it.β
A small chuckle rippled through the crowd, the kind that came from people desperate to be in on the joke.Β
βSome personal news,β Logan went on, voice steady, measured. βSeems someone took advantage of me being in the hospitalβ¦ to proposeβ¦β
At this point Logan was staring directly at Kendall, clearly taking a jab at him.
Polite applause. The sound of it made Marlaβs teeth clench.Β
Logan continued, shifting gears without missing a beat and Marla disassociated, moving in her chair to look at Shiv and her husband, who seemed even more uncomfortable than Kendall. βItβs so, so important that children are supported and encouraged.β His voice took on an almost thoughtful lilt. βEverything Iβve done, Iβve done for my children.β
Marla turned her head back at him, just slightly. And thatβs when she caught it.
Loganβs eyes, cutting through the crowd, landing directly on her.
It was brief. A flicker. A fraction of a second too long to be accidental.
Then he moved on, as if she were nothing.
Marlaβs fingers tightened around her glass.
Roman, watching her, let out a low chuckle. βWow. That was something.β
βOh, definitely.β Roman tilted his head, eyes gleaming. βWhat do you think it meant?β
Marla did not know what Loganβs stare meant. Was it even important? Was it a hello? A βfuck youβ? Or just some good old-fashioned βI see you, and I own youβ Roy-family mind games?Β
It didnβt really matter, what was important was how she felt about it.Β
And Marla liked it.
She didnβt care if it meant that Logan hated her. All she cared about was the fact that he had noticed. That she was important.Β
Marla set down her drink with careful precision. βIf you have to ask, youβll never know.β
Roman let out a soft whistle, amused. βYou really havenβt lost your touch.β
She turned, fully toward him now, resting her elbow on the table. βAnd you? Same old Roman? Still playing fool while the kingdom burns?β
He grinned, unfazed. βWhat can I say? I know my strengths.β
She studied him for a beat. βAnd your weaknesses?β

hey so i just want to rant a bit on silco and jinx's relationship and share my perspective over the whole 'silco was a good father bc he loved jinx' (sorry if there's any grammar mistakes, english isn't my first language)
firstly i'd like to talk about the whole silco mentally abusing jinx:
- yes, silco did love jinx but he was still manipulating her so that she remained as jinx and acted in a way that could benefit him.
- after vi reappears, you can literally see silco trying to pin jinx against her by using lies and touching on jinx's insecurities (she could never love you after what you did, she just wants you for the blue thingy, etc)
- he does this because he doesn't want to lose jinx.
- at that point jinx wasn't of any 'use' to him, politically speaking; she caused more harm than good.
- however, silco couldn't imagine his life without her which is why he keeps using these manipulation techniques in order to keep a certain control over her so that she stays.
- silco feels like he's a bad person and fears that jinx might figure it out and hate him, so he decides to mentally abuse her.
- you can love someone inmensely and still do them harm; that is quite literally a representation of a toxic relationship.
now i'll talk about the physical stuff:
- honestly silco and jinx are both some of my fav characters, and although i find their relationship interesting, i think that it's very very weird.
- like yeah, it is clear that silco loved jinx but it was more in a trauma-bond type of way.
- silco saw himself in powder in the way that they were both betrayed by their older siblings (figure for silco), so when he saw how vi had abandoned powder, he felt connected to her and decided to 'adopt' and take her in his care.
- however this father-daughter relationship is not normal.
- despite the fact silco did perceive her as his daughter, they still had this strange touchy thing that isn't normal at all (the 'baptism' scene is sooo uncomfortable, they look like their about to kiss at one pointππ).
- they aren't romantically attracted to each other, they just feel this deep connection that they don't know how to express correctly.
- this is probably due to both of them having very strained relationships w family members so they didn't quite know what was right or wrong in the interactions within that area.
- i'd also like to point out the fact that jinx at first saw vi and cait's relationship as something sibling-like (which is why she was jealous of cait), demonstrating that jinx didn't understand the boundaries that should exist between family members.
my conclusion: silco was a loving father, not a good one.
