starter for @elisiiiums (catalina) location: secret ruins nightclub.
"You know you're going to get punched if you keep listening in on conversations like that." Ana said, letting out a small laugh. She leaned on the bar for a moment, grateful for something to distract her from the incredibly busy evening she was having. "Do you want anything?"
Catalina-- well, she doesn't pout. But she pouts as much as a grown woman can. Ana may be right, but Catalina couldn't help it. Some people were having a mild couples quarrel and Cat wanted to help. Still, Catalina looks over the menu before saying, "Moscow Mule?" Because she did like the bite of the ginger beer. "Hey, but listen. If you forgot an important date, what would you do to make up for it?" It's what the conversation she'd been eavesdropping on was about but Catalina hadn't had a lover in that way so who was she to say what appropriate penance was.
that was the thing about cat, jo's day always got a little brighter upon seeing her. the smile was evident on her face as she walked further into the shop, looking around and admiring all the flowers. luckily her head is turned away from her in the moment that she asks about what she is missing in jo's life. there's a small frown as the thought runs through her mind of what she could possiby say about her time away. but, she quickly settles on a brief deflection of the new postives. "well..." jo turns back to face her after grabbing a nice pre-made bouquet. "i bought a nice little house in culver's point now. just finished the painting and the wallpaper so now i think it's only right that i add some finishing touches to the decor. how have you been, wht have i missed?"
"Fresh carnations in today, Jo," Cat says, walking around the opposite side of Wallflower. She watches Jo decide on one of the bouquets and smiles. It looked like Jo. In the language of flowers, Cat may translate it to mean, you've decided on a fresh beginning. I will grant you shelter and ward away negativity. But that felt silly to say aloud.
At Jo's questions, Cat has to admit that things have been somewhat the same as always here in Maple Brook. "Oh, well," she starts, looking around, "you missed this flower shop, of course." A light laugh. "But really, this town doesn't change much. It's beautiful and picturesque... I think you may have missed the New England air more than anything. And the feeling of being blissfully stuck in time. Or maybe that's me being a romantic again."
starter for @weavercaroline where: waffle stop
"I still say we need to visit some shows," Elise says between bites of her waffle, trying to keep the whipped fluff from falling off the sides every time she took a bite. She'd suggested it a few times, since relating to Caroline about a love of theatre. While Elise tended to lean towards straight-plays, Caroline's wheelhouse was musical theatre. Goodness, she'd even played in the pit for a few. Elise admired that so much. She takes another bite of her dessert, laughing a bit as she nearly loses her handle on the wrapping. "We've talked about it before the winter started, but I really mean it this time. I'll even book the tickets."
sugar was, in fact, in a great mood on that bright, winter morning. he was a frequenter of the flower shop ever since he and elise had gone on their first date. he liked spoiling his girl, and fresh flowers were one of his favourite ways. "i'm looking for something special for elise." he said brightly, looking around. he had too many ideas, everything here was too pretty. "we're doing dinner tonight and i want to surprise her." the flowers were always a surprise to elise, who was still in shock that sugar was into her. her humbleness was one of the main things he adored about her, and knew that her resistance stemmed from a lack of self-esteem instead of lack of an interest in him.
Catalina raises a brow, quirks the corner of her smile. Something special for Elise. "Well, she's a lucky lady," Catalina says, pulling a blank order form and pen to take down Sugar's thoughts. He always had grand romantic ideas, which was good for Catalina because it meant that it was a good deal of inspiration to take from and translate into a floral arrangement. "Do you have any idea what you want this time. Any specific occasion, or are you being a spontaneous gentleman again?" (Which, by the way, Catalina had no issue with! It just meant there was a bit more room to play with the designs.)

after taking quite the sequester, and staring at the newly decorated walls of her home, jo finally decides enough is enough. have to face the world sometime, she says to herself on a cycle. if there's one thing that can bring herself out of her mind it's fresh flowers. they have always been a beautiful certainty in her life.
and all worries are washed away she she's greeted by catalina. she can't help the smile that comes to her face as she responds, "boy, am i so glad to see you. " she finally releases a subtle sigh of relief and walks further into the store. " it's as gorgeous as ever in here... not that it wasn't before or anything but..." she laughs softly, cutting herself off and adding a, " how are you doing?"
"No, no, I understand!" Catalina says cheerfully, "it's been awhile. Even after a single day off I'm stunned walking back inside. And, how am I doing? So much better now that you're here." The thing was, Catalina worked well in silence, sure. Her and the tinny radio she got years ago and played when it was empty... but something about having others hear made the creativity flow through her. Like Yapping was the magic that Cat needed to make magic happen. "Talk to me, what am I missing about your life while I'm in here snipping leaves and tying bows?"
at the mention of doctors, he shook his head fervently. he had seen too many doctors today and really just wanted to go to bed. "no, no, i'm alright, i swear. just a very long day. i work at the hospital and we're understaffed right now." he said softly, appreciating her concern. he took a long swig of the coffee, feeling the warm liquid slide down his throat and give him a miniscule boost of energy. he blushed slightly when she said he looked unwell, and shook his head at her offer. "i'm okay, elise, i promise. i just work too hard. you could join me for a cup, if you have a few? i could do with some company today." there was a reason he hadn't gone straight home after work, as it had been an emotionally difficult day on top of the long hours.
Elise tilts her head, concerned once again. She gives him another once-over, afraid for a moment that he'd collapse if she didn't keep her eyes on him. Still, though, his explanation made sense and it really is cold and flu season, isn't it? Perhaps Elise should be more careful, considering contagions and all, but instead, she slides into the seat across from him and smiles. "And you chastise me for working too hard," she says with an attempt at humor. "I have as much time as you need me for, Zac. Take a moment, breathe. I'm right here."

"You look like you're in good spirits this morning, Sugar," Catalina says as she watches Sugar stroll in, the bright sound of the shop bell echoing the bright look on his face. She and Sugar weren't necessarily close, but Catalina made an effort to know and be friendly with anyone who ever stepped through Wildflower's doors. "What can I do for you? Any special occasions that need some floral arrangements?"
zac was exhausted. he had just finished a 16 hour stretch in the pediatric icu, who was desperately understaffed after being ravaged by a flu bug, and had already fallen asleep standing up while waiting for his coffee. they called his name and he took his drink, finding a booth to sit in. unfortunately, as soon as his butt hit the seat, his eyes were closed again. he hadn't even had a sip of his coffee yet. they didn't open again until he heard a voice, talking to him. he jumped slightly, his eyes flying open, his cheeks turning warm with a blush. "i'm so sorry, i must have dozed off for a second there. what did you say?" he asked sheepishly, finally taking a sip of his coffee.
"I said I think you ought to see a doctor," she said again, eyes wide. "or... see yourself home?" It's all said out of kindness, of course. Kindness and worry. Elise had watched the man slowly slip in and out of sleep a time too many and had decided it was her job (it wasn't) to check in. Not that she'd been asked her opinion, but she knew Zac tangentially and it wasn't like her to see someone she cared about (she cared far too much about far too many people) in distress and not at least ask how they were. "I hate to be nosy, I really do, but is there anything I can do for you? You look, frankly, quite unwell."

People come and go through Maple Brook, that much Catalina knew. Many childhood friends had gone to city-wards, many new friends had come from smaller towns. Or maybe it was reversed?
In any case, Catalina had no trouble making bouquets for any of them. She loved to convey love through flowers, a translator from one person's affection to another.
She's working on a birthday bouquet when someone familiar walks through the door and Catalina is so glad no one else is here when she exclaims, "joanna!"

who: open @maplebrookstarters where: book voyage
Jonathan was a familiar face at Book Voyage. He didn't often purchase any books (he preferred to patronize the local library) but he did enjoy the entire aesthetic of the bookshop on wheels. So, it was hardly surprising when he was left in charge of it for a few minutes. "Oh, the owner'll be back in ten minutes," he said, glancing up from the book he was reading. "I can uh..." he swallowed, not really a big conversationalist but trying, "make suggestions if you're not looking for something in particular."
Elise loved Book Voyage. Before coming to Maple Brook, the idea of a travelling book shop seemed unfeasible. The small Midwest Town where she grew up was known for being stable and safe. No one really tried new shops, and those that did quickly learned that the town thrived on routine.
Maple Brook was different. Sometimes it felt sleepy, but in a way, it was a dream. There were so many charming things in Maple Brook that every new day felt like a brand-new adventure, even if she's lived here for thirty-something years.
Anyhow, so Elise wanders to Book Voyage to look for a book she can take inspiration from (Elise also loved the library but if she planned to annotate a story, best not do so in a library book) and sees Jonathan there. The two of them had crossed paths often enough but not so often that they were friends. Still, comrades in book-enjoying was friendly enough for Elise to say 'hi.'
"A recommendation would be lovely, honestly," Elise says, glancing at the shelves. "What are you reading today, Jonathan?"
Catalina Young
look who goes there! Itās Catalina Young. wait, you donāt know who she is? the fifty-two year old florist at wallflower has been in town for, like, fifty-two years (mostly). i believe they live in broomley, but i usually see them around aurora's fair. they can be a bit nosy, but i think being a complete romantic kinda balances them out, you know?
ABOUT
| Tw Parental Death, Mild Medical Scares |
Catalina Young is the youngest child of an actress and photographer. From a young age, her parents taught her about seeing life positively and romanticizing all the little things. They wanted their daughter to always see the glass half full.
Growing up, Cat's mother had always been a little ill. The story was that her mother had complications from pneumonia and bronchitis a few years after Cat was born, from which she never fully recovered. Cat grew up taking care of a lot of household chores, and even household finances as her dad took care of making money for the home. He put his photographer work to the side in favor of a lucrative desk job which kept the family in relative comfort and would paid for Catalina's schooling.
Unfortunately, in her first year of college, Catalina's mother passed due to complications with what should have been a routine medical procedure. Catalina dropped out of school to help her father at home, eventually achieving her undergraduate degree in Communications at twenty-nine after a series of further family misfortunes.
Still, Catalina was positive! She was a complete romantic and āfixerā and has always tried to find the best solutions to her friends' and family's problems.
Though sometimes this backfires, Catalina takes every chance she can to see these as growth opportunities. Just like when she was a kid, Cat tries to make the best out of any situation.
Catalina has had a series of jobs, all of which sheās had difficulty finding meaning in. For a long time, she'd stuck it out at a desk job reconciling invoices for freelancers, though this proved tedious and unfulfilling.
Eventually, she landed a job Wallflower and she became entirely enamored. Though her family doesn't get why she'd leave a stable job to make follow arrangements, they support her as long as she's happy. Catalina's been at Wallflower for ten years, often helping people find arrangements for events and sometimes reading their fortune (via horoscope, tarot cards, or cartomancy).
Moving Forward / Plotting Ideas
Many people come to Catalina to celebrate big occasions! She always knows what kind of flowers to use in a bouquet!
Catalina can get herself into trouble, becoming a little too involved in other peopleās business. Most of her interest in people starts with a bouquet, but her imagination and wild ideas can quickly spiral out into situations she wasnāt quite ready for.
Catalina likes photography and learned some basics from her dad. While she's not a professional, she does like taking candid photos of friends and family in special moments of their lives.
One of Cat's guilty pleasures is window shopping. She doesn't always purchase something, but she loves hyping up her companions if someone comes with her.
Catalina goes for walks around town to get inspiration for bouquets! She likes storytelling through flowers. She always welcomes anyone to join her.
Annelise "Elise" Astor
look who goes there! Itās Annelise āEliseā Astor. wait, you donāt know who she is? the fifty-five year old administrative support at the maple brook post has been in town for, like, thirty-one years. i believe they live in springdale, but i usually see them around nine lives cafe. they can be a bit judgmental, but i think being kind kinda balances them out, you know?
ABOUT
Anneliese has always been the 'second-favorite.' First-born, but too independent for her parentsā attention. Top of her class, but didnāt stand out enough to be particularly notable. All her life, sheās been told that sheās good, but not necessarily great.
The summer after she graduated university, Annelise moved to Maple Brook, wanting to be commuting distance (all things considered) from NYC. While she originally had aspirations to work in the city, she ended up falling in love with Maple Brook more than she thought.
Anneliseās first passion is writing, though she knows that sheād make a terrible starving artist. Her original plan was to commute into the city and try to work in publishing, but circumstances changed and Annelise decided she'd rather work more locally in Maple Brook.
Eventually, this led to a job at the Maple Brook Post.
At first, Annelise -- opting to go by Elise as part of her ⨠shiny ⨠new life -- had started out helping do layout proofing and basic administrative tasks at the Maple Brook post. Eventually, she worked her way up to an Administrative Position, handling some elements of HR, but mostly focusing on making sure the organization runs smoothly.
She can be a bit protective and uptight about the day-to-day operations but overall means well and tries to keep those in the office in good spirits. She often sets up office outings and offers advice to her younger co-workers.
Still, people do call her a workaholic at times.
Though Elise tends to make friends rather easily, she has a terrible track record with dating. Her longest relationship roughly seven-years, though her shortest was three-days. In her seven-year relationship, she acted functionally as a stepmother to her partnerās daughter. Since then, Elise wonders what it would be like to be a mother - though, at her age, she tries not to think about what 'might' have been.
Her hobbies include cooking and baking, as well as hosting dinners for her friends. Somehow, her apartment is always able to accommodate everyone with just a bit of rearranging the furniture.
Moving Forward / Plotting Ideas
In town, Elise would like to start a book club for anyone to join! She thinks itās a good way to support Book Voyage and the local library.
She likes buying Fresh Produce from Aurora's Fair and walking around the Greens.
Elise would like to get some closure with her ex!
Overall, just wants to make the most out of life and you will probably see her at a few events over the month.
