zac was very glad that maple brook was such a small town and that everyone knew him because if he were anywhere else in the world, carrying a screaming toddler over his shoulder through the park would look suspicious. hell, maybe it looked suspicious here. he was just too done to care. they were already late to meet up with phoenix when kit started her temper tantrum and he just didn't want to deal with it today. he didn't set her down until he had reached phoenix, and then did so wordlessly, turning her to face his friend. "here, kit, look. it's your favourite person." he sighed, watching as the little one immediately perked up. she rubbed at her face, doing a terrible job of wiping her tears away, before throwing herself at phoenix for a hug.
zac just watched silently, feeling his hair turning grey. "i'm starting to think she loves you more than me, man." he admitted, sitting on the bench next to his friend.

bean balanced the two cups of coffee carefully as he knocked on the door to julien's office. he opened the door slightly, popping his head through the crack, to make sure that his friend wasn't on the phone or something. upon seeing that he wasn't on the phone, bean grinned widely. "hey hey. i brought coffee." he said, stepping into the office and holding the cup forward like it was the holy grail. "i don't know about you, but it's a six cup day for me today." bean had been up and going for hours already, even though it was only mid-morning. life at the stables was never calm.
"kit!! get back here!!" zac called after the toddler who was running away from him at top speed, but it was too late. she had already seen grandpa on the other side of the park and once her eyes were set on grandpa, nothing could deter her. zac kept his pace at a half-jog, making sure she was always in his sights, but he wasn't worried. pretty soon, she was wrapping her tiny little arms tightly around his dad and squealing with laughter as he picked her up. "hey dad." zac grinned, closing the distance between them. he gave his father a half-hug, knowing his hands were full of kit. "how's it going? how was work?"

biography.
for bean, all roads eventually lead back to maple brook. at first, he had big dreams. he was going to leave town, move to la, and become an actor. he was a star in high school, always taking the lead in their productions, regardless of what it was. however, his life took a turn for the worse when he was seventeen, and his class took a trip to florida. while visiting a wildlife reserve, bean thought it would be an exciting idea to run across a river filled with alligators, using them as logs. this went terribly, as you can imagine, and by the time he was released from the hospital, they'd had to amputate his right leg from the knee down.
his dreams of becoming a big hollywood actor now dead, he threw himself into the stables. he loved the physical labour, but it was hard on his body, especially as he was learning to walk again with a prosthetic. desperate for some relief, he soon became hooked on pain medication. it destroyed his life, ruining all of the relationships he had built, including the trust of his parents. however, when his father became sick, bean had to choose between the drugs and the farm. he quit cold turkey and never looked back. unfortunately, that couldn't save his father, who passed soon after. now fully sober and running the stables by himself, bean felt a little lost. it was then that he started fostering animals. dogs, especially, but really any animal that needed a home. and then he met, and eventually married, a woman named laureline, who had just been passing through town on her way to something else, but ended up finding a home here with him.
they tried for years to have children of their own, but could never be so lucky. so when a struggling teenage entered their life, they knew what they had to do. laureline passed away of ovarian cancer only a few years after they took jd in, but that changed nothing for bean. jd was his son now, in every way except legally. unfortunately, like every child, jd grew up and moved away. once again carrying the weight of the stables on his shoulders, bean quietly slipped back into addiction. it started when he'd been hospitalized for getting kicked in the chest by a horse, and the pain medication was always a slippery slope with him. he is still struggling with his addiction, although you'd never know it by talking to him. always the bright, happy one, he will forever keep a happy face, no matter what happens.
Dove was minding his own business, taking in the surrounding area, hoping to familiarize himself with his new home. Or better yet, hoping beyond all hopes he'd find something that would be familiar to him, spark a memory. That would be asking way too much. As he gazing upon the landscape in front of him someone rammed right into him.
He didn't recognize the face that looked back at his with a very weird expression, acting as if he was some kind of figment of his imagination. "Last I checked, yes," Dove responded, confusion clear in his voice and he assumed upon his features. " Should I not be ? "
james' confusion only deepend as the man seemed to not recognize him. how could he not remember james? they had been in love. "baby, it's me. james?" he reached out to place his hand on his former fiancee's cheek but hesitated for a moment and eventually pulled his hand back. he could see no recognition on the man's face, no sign that he had any idea who james was. either he genuinely had no idea or was so committed to the act that he couldn't break even in the slightest, and james wasn't sure which idea he preferred. the love of his life had no knowledge of their life together, or he hated james so much that he'd play such a cruel prank.
he shook his head slightly, his eyes burning and prickling with tears he refused to let fall. "sorry, i...uh...must have got you confused with someone else." he swallowed the lump in his throat, shifting uncomfortably, unsure what to do or say now. did he just walk away? the thought ripped his heart out of his chest, this was the closest he had been to reuniting with his lost love, but clearly this man just wasn't him.
if there's ever anything thats a necessity in jo's world it is coffee. and after staying at the office reviewing a few briefs and preparing for upcoming motions she plans to reward herself with the biggest cup she could buy. after getting it and turning around she notices the other seemingly asleep. a part of her doesn't want to disturb. clearly he is needing a rest. but if it was jo she would want it to be in the comfort of her own home not in a public place. maybe that's why she quietly tried to say something after sitting at a table nearby. upon waking him up she automatically feels a bit of guilt. "sorry uh---yeah, sorry i just was wanting to make sure that you were okay, i guess. didn't really mean to bug or disturb you. that's on me."
when his eyes settled on her face, he let out a soft, happy hum and let his eyes flutter closed again. it had been a long time since he'd dreamed of joanna, but they had always been warm, happy dreams. and after the day he'd had, he needed happy dreams. but he was hearing real, spoken-out-loud words, and it felt weird in his brain. his eyes opened again and refocused on her face. "i--..." he started, but then gave his head a little shake. "yeah, i'm good. just a long night." he took a long swig of his coffee. "hey, you're joanna, right? it's zac, remember me?" he flashed his trademark grin at her, although it didn't quite reach his eyes anymore.

"You look like you're in good spirits this morning, Sugar," Catalina says as she watches Sugar stroll in, the bright sound of the shop bell echoing the bright look on his face. She and Sugar weren't necessarily close, but Catalina made an effort to know and be friendly with anyone who ever stepped through Wildflower's doors. "What can I do for you? Any special occasions that need some floral arrangements?"
sugar was, in fact, in a great mood on that bright, winter morning. he was a frequenter of the flower shop ever since he and elise had gone on their first date. he liked spoiling his girl, and fresh flowers were one of his favourite ways. "i'm looking for something special for elise." he said brightly, looking around. he had too many ideas, everything here was too pretty. "we're doing dinner tonight and i want to surprise her." the flowers were always a surprise to elise, who was still in shock that sugar was into her. her humbleness was one of the main things he adored about her, and knew that her resistance stemmed from a lack of self-esteem instead of lack of an interest in him.

james was used to seeing dove in places he wasn't. he was used to catching the whiff of his cologne or hearing his laugh on a busy street. at first, he would stop dead in his tracks and look around, desperate for any sign of him. but he had quickly learned to give up that hope, and since he'd moved back to maple brook, the hallucinations had settled down. which was why he couldn't understand how he was, yet again, seeing his long lost love standing there in front of him. he ignored the visions and kept walking, until he walked right into the apparition.
he stumbled back a step, his eyes going wide. "y-you're...you're real?" he was in awe, his mind whirlling, trying to explain this away. "no, you can't be real. you're not real." he muttered, running his fingers through his hair.
โ i was saying - surely there are better, comfortable places to sleep than a dirty cafe table? โ hazal questioned what the liquid was on her end of the table - was it water or some sticky, sweet beverage residue? her eyes still focused on her childhood friend, her extremely exhausted looking friend. this wasn't the first time she'd seen him this way, worn out from too long shifts at the hospital. โ please tell me you didn't drive here like this. โ she took the seat across from him, careful to keep space from her body and the edge of the table with said residue. โ what was it this time? โ
zac was always happy to see hazal, especially on a day like today. "i just...don't really want to go home right now." he admitted softly, a twinge of sadness in his voice. he shook his head adamantly when she asked if he'd driven here, too smart to ever make that kind of mistake. "no, i walked. my cars still at the hospital." it was a long walk from the hospital to the cafe and a longer one from the cafe home, but walking was good for him. it helped him process his thoughts, figure things out before he brought his work home with him. "a little girl born addicted to drugs. she's...not doing well." the shadows behind his eyes were fleeting but dark, his mind momentarily returning to the job.
"I said I think you ought to see a doctor," she said again, eyes wide. "or... see yourself home?" It's all said out of kindness, of course. Kindness and worry. Elise had watched the man slowly slip in and out of sleep a time too many and had decided it was her job (it wasn't) to check in. Not that she'd been asked her opinion, but she knew Zac tangentially and it wasn't like her to see someone she cared about (she cared far too much about far too many people) in distress and not at least ask how they were. "I hate to be nosy, I really do, but is there anything I can do for you? You look, frankly, quite unwell."
at the mention of doctors, he shook his head fervently. he had seen too many doctors today and really just wanted to go to bed. "no, no, i'm alright, i swear. just a very long day. i work at the hospital and we're understaffed right now." he said softly, appreciating her concern. he took a long swig of the coffee, feeling the warm liquid slide down his throat and give him a miniscule boost of energy. he blushed slightly when she said he looked unwell, and shook his head at her offer. "i'm okay, elise, i promise. i just work too hard. you could join me for a cup, if you have a few? i could do with some company today." there was a reason he hadn't gone straight home after work, as it had been an emotionally difficult day on top of the long hours.
Jonathan was a familiar face at Book Voyage. He didn't often purchase any books (he preferred to patronize the local library) but he did enjoy the entire aesthetic of the bookshop on wheels. So, it was hardly surprising when he was left in charge of it for a few minutes. "Oh, the owner'll be back in ten minutes," he said, glancing up from the book he was reading. "I can uh..." he swallowed, not really a big conversationalist but trying, "make suggestions if you're not looking for something in particular."
sugar was a regular at the little book shop, always keeping his eye out for something to spark inspiration inside him. he'd seen jonathan there a few times, and they'd chatted occasionally about books, but the younger man didn't seem like much of a talker. hence, sugar was surprised to see jonathan sitting in the position of power, covering the shop for the owner. "how'd you end up getting roped into this?" he teased with a smile, placing the books he'd found on the counter. he wasn't in any rush and was happy to wait and make conversation until the owner returned to check him out. "actually, i am looking for a recommendation. what's the last book you read that changed you as a person? where, when you were done with the book, you felt fundamentally changed?"
zac was exhausted. he had just finished a 16 hour stretch in the pediatric icu, who was desperately understaffed after being ravaged by a flu bug, and had already fallen asleep standing up while waiting for his coffee. they called his name and he took his drink, finding a booth to sit in. unfortunately, as soon as his butt hit the seat, his eyes were closed again. he hadn't even had a sip of his coffee yet. they didn't open again until he heard a voice, talking to him. he jumped slightly, his eyes flying open, his cheeks turning warm with a blush. "i'm so sorry, i must have dozed off for a second there. what did you say?" he asked sheepishly, finally taking a sip of his coffee.

(ย cismale, damson idris, he/himย ) look who goes there! Itโsย zachariah crowley. wait, you donโt know whoย he is? theย 34 yearย oldย pediatric nurse atย maple brook general has been in town for, like,ย 34 years. i believe they live inย culver's point, but i usually see them aroundย the final whistle. they can be a bitย stubborn, but i think beingย compassionateย kinda balances them out, you know?
tw: attempted suicide
zachariah's early years bordered on perfect. he had been adopted from birth by loving parents and lived in a nice home in a beautiful town. they'd take day trips to new york and summer vacations wherever they wanted. but, of course, when you're a child, none of that matters. in fact, the only thing in the world that mattered to young zac was basketball. from the hoop in their driveway to the school gymnasium, even in the hallways of his schools, he was never seen without his trademark basketball. day or night, rain or shine. even in the winter, he'd trek to the gym daily to shoot hoops or work out. and then, his mother died. it was the first bad thing to ever really happen to zac and he was thrown for a loop. it felt like the world had fallen away at his feet. not knowing what else to do with himself, he threw himself even harder into his training, planning to make it to the nba and make his mother proud.
his hard work paid off when it came time for college, as he'd received multiple scholarships to schools across the country. while his heart screamed at him to go to arizona and break records, he wanted to stay close to his father and settled with the university of conneticut. on the surface, he thrived at college. he was popular and well-loved, known for his talent on the court and his dedication to his grades. however, the pressure was building and it felt like he carried the world on his shoulders. when he actually achieved his dream of making it into the nba, getting drafted to the toronto raptors, he expected to be overjoyed, over the moon with happiness. instead, he felt bleak. like this torment would never end. but of course, he put on a big smile and played his heart out and did the best he could to seem happy.
unfortunately, it all became a little too much for him, and after four years in the nba, he suffered an extreme mental breakdown and made an attempt on his own life. upon his release from the hospital, he immediately returned home to maple brook, moving back into his childhood bedroom. the league let him out of his contract and he was finally free, even if now he had nothing. after taking some time to rest and recover, he went back to school and finished his nursing degree, quickly getting a job as a pediatric nurse at the local hospital. he moved out of his dad's house and into his own small flat and tried every single day not to think about how he had failed his family and everyone in this town. and then, zac met kit. abandoned as an infant, their connection was instant. zac was the only one able to calm her down, and would often pull double shifts to ensure she was properly cared for. once it became clear that nobody was coming back for her, he started the foster and adoption process. shortly before kit's second birthday, the adoption became official, and kit was his daughter. it's been an adjustment, becoming a single parent, but he's got a good support system and she seems to be a very happy, healthy toddler.
now in regular therapy, zac is focused on the future. he's recently registered with the local matchmaking agency, as he's ready to settle down. while basketball had once been his be all and end all, zac's biggest dream right now was kids. he wants a large family with a white picket fence, the whole deal. however, since his breakdown, he's had a hard time talking to people. he'd once been able to seduce the panties off a nun, but now he could hardly get up the courage to talk to someone he found attractive. his therapist says it's all a part of the process of figuring out who he is without basketball, but to him it feels like a few steps backward.
