However, when you're a young girl who gets a crush on a male character, there is no handy-dandy premade love story from a female pov (outside of specific genres like romance that exist to counter this). The protagonist is usually male, and thus the love interest is female. The male protagonist or significant character still needs to be conventionally hot, and they still need a romance, but everything is from their perspective. The audience will be attracted to characters designed specifically to be attractive, so obviously straight girls will find the hot men hot. But even though the romances are all straight and feature somebody appealing to girls, the wish fulfillment is entirely focused on "what if you dated a hot girl" and not "what if you dated a hot guy." Because a story outside of the designated "girl genres" can never make wish fulfillment about dating a man; that's gay! (This is also why yaoi exists - girls want to envision dating their fictional crushes, the male characters are the only povs, so they ship the povs together.) So girls, unable to find their romantic wish-fullfillment as easily as boys do, turn to OCs and self-insert fanfic. And because they're young, the OCs and the fanfic are pretty bad. And because they're bad and it's girls that are making them, girls end up getting mocked for even wanting to date hot fictional men in the first place, because the mascule dating fantasy is so ingrained in pop culture nobody even considers it a fantasy at all. Therein lies the hypocrisy of misongyny: girls are mocked for having to do for themselves what boys have already had done for them.
