Civilian: Deniz is a civilian now but served in the Turkish special forces alongside Emre and the rest of the squad. She is a highly trained combat veteran, but like Emre before his disappearance, neither cybernetic nor superhuman. Deniz’s specialty was reconnaissance, intelligence and tactical planning. She earned mild fame as a war hero alongside the rest of the squad, but following military service left the industry, having no interest in fame or continuing the same work with organizations like Helix or Overwatch, though she respected and supported Emre’s decision to join when he was recruited. However she would make fun of him often for his idealism, lovingly.
Current Job: Deniz is now a locally known tattoo artist, but she writes and translates poetry on the side. A few of her own poems were featured in national publications; one about the disappearance of her old friend and national war hero, Emre Sarıoğlu, was nominated for the International Nazim Hikmet Poetry award when she was in her early 40’s, though she did not win.
Family: Deniz is the older of two children, and her parents are both alive and well. Her brother is younger and more reserved than she is and she has a tendency to boss him around. She is still close with her whole family but, being a little abrasive with her strong opinions, visits for holidays and vacations no longer than a week at a time since moving away. Most of her extended family survived the omnic crisis, since she grew up in İzmir, not near the chaos centered in Istanbul. However, one favored older cousin in a branch of her family living in Istanbul did die there during the crisis, which prompted her to join the military when she was old enough.
Beliefs: Deniz is not particularly religious herself, but she respects and sometimes envies those who still are; the ability to live one’s life by their own rules is one of the most important things to her, and part of what she fought for during her time in service. After some of the things she witnessed in the special forces, she can be rather jaded to spiritual life. That said, she will still go to services with her parents when she visits, and finds a comfort in the familiarity of her hometown mosque, even if she isn’t a believer and probably wouldn’t go on her own otherwise.
Voice: You know, I hadn’t thought about that yet! I would need to sit and think that through a little more, but I’d want her to have a deep, somewhat hoarse and womanly voice. An older sister-type voice, closer to Sojourn, but a little more brash and sarcastic sounding to suit her personality.
