Iâll Follow You Into the Dark
(tagged, âletâs stop making Sci have botfeels 2019)
DJâs fingers brushed against the screen, lingering there against the line of text. Â âMy battery is low and itâs getting dark.â
But when he looked over at Tony, he was smiling. Â âIâm not,â he said. Â
Tony nodded. Â âWasnât sure. Â I mean-â He gestured at the mission logs, feeling inadequate. Â âThatâs it. Â Thatâs the end.â
Tony waited, but nothing else was forthcoming. Â He took a deep breath. Â âDo you want to-â Â He shrugged. Â âTalk about it?â
DJ thought about that, his head tipped to the side. Â Finally, he said, âI think you do.â
âNo, not really,â Tony said.  DJ just sat there, his expression quizzical. âItâs okay.  I just, I thoughtâŚâ  Tony picked up a wrench, and put it down again.  âI thought, you know, itâs another bot, and I thought you might be-â  He wrestled with his thoughts trying to figure out how to say this without upsetting DJ.  âUnhappy.â
DJ blinked, slow and careful. Â âWhy?â
Tony paused.  âBecause.  Because itâs another bot, and she-â  He stopped.  âIt?  Because Opportunity was alone, and now sheâsâŚâ
His voice trailed away, and DJ smiled. Â âWasnât alone,â he said at last. Â âShe could hear us, you know. Â Could speak to us.â Â He looked back at the screen, the angle of his cheek catching the light. Â His eyes were bright. Â âShe knew we were there. Â Waiting. Â Listening. Â Otherwise-â Â His hand came up again, fingertips tracing over the lines of text, command and response, status updates and data overflow, until they trailed away into questions for which there was no reply.
âOtherwise,â he said, âshe wouldnât have been speaking.â Â His head swung back to Tony. Â âWould she?â
âWould she?â Tony asked.
DJ considered that, one foot twitching against the leg of his stool. Â âWhy do we tell stories?â he asked at last. Â âTo be heard? Â Or because we need to tell?â
âItâs nice to be heard,â Tony said with a lopsided smile.
âYes. Â But we-â DJ gestured at his own head. Â âHumans. Â Make things in their heads. Â All the time. Â Donât they? Â Stories, for stories sake? Â Thoughts, for thoughts sake? Â No reason? Â No audience. Â Just-â He smiled, bright and brilliant. Â âBecause that is, what humans do.
âAnd thatâs what Opportunity did. Â She went where we sent her, and she told a story only she could tell. Â She showed us things, she did things, she whispered, all this way, all this, this-â The words were stumbling over themselves now, tripping and falling off of his tongue. Â âShe wasnât alone. Â When you call me, when youâre somewhere else, somewhere far, and you call me, Iâm not alone, am I? Â As long as I can hear your voice, I know youâre there.â
He pulled up files, one after another. Â Photos. Â Analysis. Â Images. Â Maps. Â âPhone. Â Text. Â Email. Â Internet, all of it-â He leaned back on his stool. Â âThere was no one there, but everyone was there, everyone who heard, everyone who listened, everyone who waited. Â She was not alone. Â We were listening. Â We heard.
âAnd we spoke back to her. Â Maybe she didnât hear. Â Maybe she did. Â But maybe-â He looked at Tony. Â âEnough battery to hear, but not to respond. Â Maybe, as her battery ran down, as the cold set in, she heard us calling. Â She heard. Â She knew. Â We were there.
âNone of us are alone. Â Voices reach farther now. Â Than they ever have.â
Tony nodded. Â âWanna build a spaceship?â he asked at last, and his throat hurt, his chest hurt.
âYes.â DJ smiled at him. Â âSomeday, someone will go there. Â Maybe us. Â Maybe someone from-â Â He shook his head. Â âSomewhere else. Â From outside. Â Coming here. Â And whoever goes there, whoever looks, theyâll find her. Â Â Sheâs a monument, now. Â Sheâs proof. Â That we can do amazing things, when we try. Â When we work together. Â When we dream and work and-â
He blinked, and there were tears in his eyes. Â âOn another world, there stands a monument now. Â A good one. Â To exploration. Â To bravery. Â To everything we want to be.â
His hands flew in the air. Â âLook how far we made it!â he yelled, his head tipped back. Â âLook how far SHE made it! Â Blazing a trail, and someone, someone someday WILL follow.â
He grinned, and a tear ran down his cheek. Â âAnd, and, people are writing her goodbye letters. Â And making art, thanking her, and her team, and seeing. Â Learning all she did, and all she accomplished, and dreaming of whatâs next, because she could do it, and so can we. Â So sheâs a monument to that, too, to how deeply, how easily-â
He stopped, scrubbing at his face with the heels of his hands. Â The words, when they came, were muffled behind his fingers. Â âWe love things.â
Tony wrapped his arms around DJ, holding him tight.  âItâs not one of the smartest things our brains like to do, is it?â he asked, just to hear DJ laugh against his shoulder.  âThis making friends with things that will leave us.  Will⌠ Die.â
âThey told her, sheâd live for ninety days,â DJ whispered. Â âThey gave her three months to do everything she could.â Â His head tipped up. Â âAnd she proved us wrong, didnât she?â Â He grinned, and tears ran down both cheeks. Â âShe did more. Â Than they ever thought she could.â
âFifteen years,â Tony agreed.
âFifteen years,â DJ said. Â âAnd work. Â That will last forever.â
Tony leaned over, pressing a kiss to the top of DJâs head. Â âStill building a spaceship.â
DJ hugged him tight.  âI think⌠ Sheâd like the company.â
