functionally suicidal character saying “I would die for you” to their significant other and its like. I get the sentiment, honey, but if a hot dog vendor told me he’d sell hot dogs for me, I wouldn’t feel very moved now would I
Hating Guinevere bc of the affair is a lame take ✋
Like you’re reading the murder, rape, and incest texts and cheating is where you find a major flaw?
Started East of Eden, hm.

People have to be kidding when they say Heart of Darkness is peak anti-imperialism. It’s so racist???
A thing can be against empire and be amazingly racist simultaneously.
A thing can also make people who ARE racist think it's against them personally while not actually being that sophisticated psychologically, which I think is what's going on here.
See it’s more the fact that it does a piss poor job of being against empire. Like yes I understand that Kurtz is a metaphor for Empire and Marlow’s obsession with him is supposed to be that of any colonist yearning for the wealth of nations and the ideas that get them there. But when Marlow describes the people being colonized there’s no sympathy, there’s no kindness, he doesn’t even see them as people truly. In fact the few times when he worries about the effect of empire he worries about the land itself and not even the people living there.
It seems to go back on itself on the very point it is trying to make, what with Marlow not even being overly questioning of Kurtz even at the very end. It really seems that only when he is talking with Kurtz’s betrothed back in Europe that he even shows any sort of discomfort with Kurtz’s existence. He listened to the cries for ivory with Kurtz’s dying breath but doesn’t seem to truly feel much of anything. He continued to be obsessed with him, even so much as agreeing with Kurtz’s betrothed that he loved him and that his ideas were revolutionary.
Then we circle back to the racism. I’m sorry but I cannot forgive a book that calls the helmsman who helped Marlow make it to Kurtz “a single grain of sand in a black Sahara,” that isn’t even the worst racial epithet used (along with the actual slurs!), but it truly shows that Marlow doesn’t CARE. He says he misses the helmsman but in the same breath calls him deficient along with a multitude of other racially charged descriptors. It is hard for a book to be anti imperialist if it cannot view those being colonized as human.
Hum. I DO think it's possible to split hairs and say he's against empire by having such a vast contempt for the Other, but for regular intents and purposes, yeah, you're right. The idea of being anti empire because it puts you unavoidably in contact with yucky brown people is obviously racist to the core.
I think it's a deliberate rejoinder to Kipling and the white man's burden of fascination with the people you're contemptuous of- they do still read Kiping in India, after all- but yeah, it's very much reacting to Victoriana.
Not unlike Lovecraft, now I'm thinking about it.
See it’s not even that. Marlow couldn’t care less about interacting with the native Africans! He sees them as less than human, they’re regularly described in animalistic terms. At best they are merely tools for him to accomplish his goal (finding Kurtz). He doesn’t want Empire to end because of wanting to avoid interacting with Black people, his only moments of wanting it to end is because he’s scared of it consuming his life the way it did Kurtz’s. The entire focus of the book is on White Men and the psychological toll that perpetuating colonialism has on them. Like “oh no I’m colonizing a continent and I think I’m going crazy ☹️” is the vibe.
Like Marlow is OBSESSED with Kurtz!!! And when he has some small glimpse of reflection on how Empire destroyed Kurtz (the bemoaning how he needs more ivory as he dies), that is only when he is truly anti imperial. And it’s through an entirely white lens.
Also Conrad is straight up just racist, like have you seen what he named the book he wrote in 1897 🤠. Bro got censored by THE USA for using a slur, that’s how bad it was. Plus Marlow is inspired by Conrad’s own experiences as part of a colonizing force in Africa, like those slurs and pov didn’t come from nowhere.
some people really do need to start reminding themselves that the answer to "why didn't the character just do [something entirely different]" is often simply "because then there wouldn't be a story"
Book that was good: I liked it 👍
Book that was bad: this sucked 👎
Book that I wanted to like but which failed to live up to my hopes: I am going to write 10,000+ words explaining exactly why this book wronged me

It’s so infuriating that when the most horrid of works has even the slightest amount of homoeroticism, people will defend it to the ends of the earth
“we shouldn’t be holding indie creators to the same standards as bigger media“ i agree on principle but like this only seems to ever come up when the indie creator in question is being racist for some mysterious reason. So
