should be able to leave kudos on scientific studies. i liked your paper dude keep at it
sorry, Dr. Dude
Probably one of my favorite random things about LotR is the fact that
a) Pippin did a Gollum impression in the books
b) Pippin had never MET Gollum before that point and never would
c) yet it was an ACCURATE impression, as it startled and was recognized by the orc he was speaking to
d) the only possible explanation for Pippin Took’s accurate Gollum impression is this: Bilbo, while telling stories to the eager children, must have imitated Gollum perfectly
Which also kind of drives home how weird it would have been for both Frodo and Sam to suddenly be travelling with what was basically the equivilent of like... rumplestiltskin... from their childhood bedtime stories.
My funniest ventriloquism story starts with the fact that I was obsessed with ventriloquism from a young age. I used to obsessively practice speaking without moving my lips, practicing the different tongue and air tricks and everything. Then I got sick with Bell’s Palsy, and it hit both sides of my face at the same time. Bell’s Palsy is like a headcold that hits your facial nerves. Anyway- This meant my entire face was paralyzed. I couldn’t speak using my lips. The doctor stared at me, dumbfounded that I was able to speak very fluently without my face moving at all.

i think it’s funny when someone acts really angry about something you say online. could be whatever. and you check their profile and go. oh wait. you’re literally 14. nevermind. talking about this with you is like 100% useless. and they go “my age has nothing to do with this” like actually your age has everything to do with this. when you are 14 literally everything is influenced by how fucking 14 years old you are.
The other thread on this was started by chuds so I'm gonna reboot it myself: it's really sad that people don't understand the Midwest is where food gets grown and we're supposed to grow a lot more of it.
Suggesting people just move to the cities is astonishingly clueless and would only make the situation worse. Some Americans have truly no idea what it's like out there, tiny communities separated by hour long drives if you even have transport, millions of people really are just abandoned and left behind by what we consider progress and have no way out.
@revretch already posted this in the old thread, but I think a lot of people who grew up on the coasts, and especially people posting from other countries, have genuinely no idea what the population distribution of America actually looks like.
The state of wyoming is 97,914 square miles. That is larger than the entire united kingdom, and it’s one of a couple dozen states making up our midwest. This is what the human population of those 97,914 square miles look like:
These are ISLANDS of human life separated by hundreds of miles of either cornfield or scrubland in every direction. I’ve been to and lived in little pockets of civilization like that; people are stuck with dilapidated old trucks they have to share, rotting farmhouses whole families still use, no hospital, sometimes no school, often no grocery store, high-price but still incredibly shitty phone and internet service and definitely no public transport services. Some people have little more than a few gas stations and a Mcdonald’s because they were lucky enough for their town to be on a major truck route. When I spent a couple years with Rev in one of Iowa’s little truck-stop towns our only food options were one monstrously overpriced supermarket, two fast food places, a bar and a convenience store. We’d have to spend the gas to drive a full hour until we hit a Wal-Mart and stock up on all the non-perishables we could, which we could because we were privileged to have our own car, unlike a lot of our most immediate neighbors - who were still far enough away even in that same town that we never actually saw each other. Acres and acres of farmland separated those homes. Any conversation around how to evolve our infrastructure and systems NEEDS to account for these areas and it needs to do so in a way that does not demand people abandon what little they do have; you can’t ask someone with almost nothing to gamble the rest of it on moving to a city that already has a homeless crisis and reacts to it with spikes on the sidewalk. But it’s like that for EVERYTHING. Every discussion of the environment, of public services, of getting people food or health care or education or sustainable energy seems completely dominated by people who have no idea how most of the country actually lives out there, and part of that is because of that aforementioned shitty internet service. The poverty shuts them out of the conversation about their own poverty. It’s a nightmare.
Check out my ongoing comic Crow Time. It has crows, and also neat pantheons of epic beasties.
The black areas represent the remaining natural dark skies in the United States
I’ve been in the middle of the ocean at night and now live in texas and it is so hard to explain to people that no, they have not ever seen the night sky. It is so hard to explain to people that what they think is a proper night sky is fucking pathetic. A disgrace.
People talk about how you can’t see stars in the city and yeah, that’s true, but their concept of “seeing stars” is being able to make out orion’s belt.
So, so few people have see the sky in all its glory and it’s not sad. It’s a fucking crime. Seeing a perfectly dark night, no clouds, not a hint of light pollution? That’s a fucking religious experience.
The sky the vast vast majority of us grew up with is not the sky that inspired us to look up. It is not the sky that inspired constellations. You can’t even see most constellations.
Your ancestors looked at the night sky and said “surely, that is where the gods must live.” And you might be lucky if you can see hardly more than a handful of stars.
The sky is full, fucking FULL, of stars, and you’ve never seen them.
light pollution is also actively harmful to many species of birds, mammals, and insects
I took these photos on the Isle of Skye, in a place with no light pollution. Skies can look like this.
