the mortifying ordeal of posting on facebook
i'm having trouble continuing Monument in large part because the way i feel about depictions of fictional violence has changed a lot since i started. almost every story i really like deals with violence to some degree but the ones that resonate most with me in the past few years are those that emphasize the tragedy of it, the toll of it, even when that violence is just, or necessary, or even cathartic.
i mostly was not considering this when i wrote the early chapters or when i planned out the events of the chapters yet to come. early Monument is, primarily, a delivery vehicle for romance, and spectacle.
and i do think there's a resolution that is possible here, that honors the impact of these events on the young protagonists, while also staying true to the established tone. but it sure is proving a lot harder than the (lovingly) pulpy genre stuff that got me here in the first place.
wrong about this they have to kill like its nothing
like no actually the point of monument is that catra just killed a guy and she's up at night losing sleep and her mind nails dug into her palms wishing someone would shoot her in the back of the head because adora wont text her back

forever thinking of catra from the 2018 she-ra series. what if you were deeply in love with your best friend. what if you chose long ago to abandon your morals to stay by her side. what if, at the very first chance, she was faced with the same decision and chose her morals over you. what if your grief over that choice was so immense that it fueled five seasons of television and almost ended the world. what if, at the end of it all, the end of the very world she fought so hard to save, you asked her to stay and she finally, finally did
girl with nothing going on

This Could Ruin Everything
9x12 inches. graphite, acrylic, colored pencil on mineral paper

going on HRT is a serious decision you should make with the utmost gravity. people might think you're cool, badass even. You might find yourself happy with your life, approaching the world with newfound wisdom one way or another. It might be what you want. It might get you off. It might just be a cool story to tell people. I, myself, found the initial experience was like I had sleepwalked through a nightmare for a quarter century - and for the first time, not just the first time I could remember but actually the first time, I was awake, and the sun was shining, and the world was beautiful. So obviously all of those are risks
they should invent a sadness that is good for something
