it’s possible to create a comforting & meaningful life for yourself with what you have at the moment. you may not see it, but sometimes we can be so busy comparing ourselves and wishing we had more things, but forgetting what we do have.

DRINK MORE WATER AND KEEP YOUR ASS FUCKING HYDRATED

So many people this time of year will go hiking or camping or whatever else with barely any water with them at all, then get severely dehydrated and come to the ER to get help, and wonder why they got dehydrated. You need a lot more water/electrolytes than you realize, especially when being active in heat and sun. And if there’s cloud cover you usually need *more* hydration because it causes humidity and mugginess. Overcast skies does not mean cooler weather or less hydration is necessary

If you are dehydrated and come to the ER we’ll sit you in a room, run some tests on you, and get you started on drinking fluids like chilled water and Gatorade. Usually sitting in a cool place and rehydrating is all that’s necessary to stave off dehydration and get you feeling back to normal. And then you’ve paid about $2000+ for a Gatorade, which is usually not worth it. This is something you can easily do at home/in a hotel/etc., just go somewhere that is shaded/covered and has a breeze or AC, and *sip* on an electrolyte beverage and water interchangeably. SIP ON IT because if you chug you will overload your system and probably throw up.

If you are so severely dehydrated that your body is shutting down or you’re throwing up blood or whatever else, then we will give you fluids through an IV so it’s direct to your blood stream. And still have you sip water/Gatorade to rehydrate. And that’s pretty much it altogether. Sure sometimes IV fluids are necessary, but not in most cases. They also won’t ever be necessary if you take proper care of your body and hydrate as you’re supposed to.

Please y’all be careful and safe! It’s fun to be active in the summer, but it’s not worth you getting sick/hurt or having huge hospital bills just because you didn’t hydrate yourself properly. This is a huge amount of what we see in the ER this time of year, and it’s frustrating when people aren’t invested in their own survival.
