JOHNNY C'S HOUSE; ADDRESS 777
[REFERENCES, FURNITURE, KNICK-KNACKS, MAPS, ETC.]
I know that this is going to be a fool's errand, and so does everybody else reading this, but I wanted to attempt mapping out Johnny's house based on JTHM's inconsistent panelling, and detailing everything about the architecture and furniture that I can. I hope this is helpful to someone looking to write or draw settings inside the house, or amusing to those just looking to watch me push this boulder up its insurmountable hill, laughing and throwing peanuts as I go tumbling back down. I'll start with an image compilation of the house's exterior. It's got one floor and this side compartment jutting out on the right. I can only guess by its state of decomposition that it was either abandoned or unfinished when Johnny came to live there. There's boards on the two frontmost windows, which both have broken lattices, but the number and styling of the boards is inconsistent. I'm going to assume based on the demise of the survey guy that this is because Johnny is re-breaking the windows on a regular basis. I'll be moving onto the general internal layout of the structure with great hesitance and a heavy heart.
HALLWAY THEORY + GENERAL STRUCTURE
I'll just be blunt and say that it's apparent that Johnny's house having a coherent layout was at the bottom of JV's priorities, and why shouldn't it be considering that's the whole point? It is a paranormal nest where rooms are always shifting, dissapearing, and appearing based upon need. Johnny doesn't ever seem confused in his house, so I'm led to believe that he's got control over what rooms are accesible due to his connection with the house, whether he realizes this or not. There's a lot of things which get moved between rooms, like his drawing desk, the Doughboys, and various other things like lamps, chairs, and tables.
I could attribute this to Johnny doing a lot of re-decorating with him breaking windows, shooting himself in the head, smearing blended rat guts on the walls, and other messy, messy things that'd require a lot of borderline compulsive cleaning. However, I could guess too that the house is able to generate objects, like how there's all-of-a-sudden a chair for the survey guy to sit down on despite it not being visible in the first peek we get into Johnny's house. I'll get into the living room later, and the curtain room where Devi almost gets killed, but something worth noting about both is them being connected and lacking windows.
It's a straightforward chain of rooms, and I've included two places where it could be in the main structure. I'm leaning towards it being in the vertical position due to a window towards the back of the house being shown in a vignette in the curtain room with Reverend Meat.
...However, this all begs the question of what's connecting all of these mundane rooms, like the living room, bathroom, and foyer?
I propose there being a hallway, which I've labelled in hot pink. It's shown as leading out from the room entered when you first walk into the house, and is definitely connected to at least one unidentified room. It's through this hallway which Jimmy presumably follows Johnny down to the lower levels, and through this hallway where Krik gets tossed towards the front entrance of the house. It seems that this magical-mysterious hallway is what leads to basically all other locations in the house.
If you want a list of all the mundane rooms that this house is confirmed as having on the top level then there's the foyer, living room, bathroom, kitchen, the room with the curtains, and the room where Johnny ends up shooting himself, with no shown bedroom. I'm puzzled by the entire rightmost part of the house, which might have another hallway of this sort, and is never explained. Johnny is shown to clean his weapons and torture people upstairs at least sometimes, so given how unfurnished that it looks in certain panels it could be a wing of the house reserved for only those sorts of purposes. I couldn't tell you. I've noticed that the house's posters are subject to change, which I know is just a visual gag, but I'd like to think that's happening in-universe alongside things like the occasional dissapearing and reappearing windows.
THE FOYER [THE FRONTMOST ROOM]
I'm referencing from its appearence in the JTSM part of the first issue the most because that's about the one time where it's consistent. However, I'm including a compilation of all the different furniture and posters it's shown to sometimes have off to the side to be comprehensive. I've created this map based on Johnny's movements throughout the scene, going from [1] to [2], then back to [1], and then to [3], [4], and [5] over the duration of the scene. I've included an arrow with the fourth position to demonstrate the general direction he's facing and moving in the associated panels. I had a difficult time placing the location of the changing poster situated in one of the back corners of the room, but that is a somewhat consistent feature. It seems like this is a sparsely furnished everything room. He likes going in there to look up at the stars because it has the largest windows of the house, but he'll also kill people or draw comics in there [although not exclusively in this room, as he's implied to do that elsewhere]. It always has wooden floorboards, nothing special, but the walls go between being cracked plaster and wood panelling. I won't attempt to guess the colors of anything, as there's a multitude of answers with equal viability, but the flooring always consists of old wooden planks.
JOHNNY'S LIVING ROOM [YES, THAT IS SINGULAR!]
I'm fascinated by this room for a couple of different reasons, or really two that are important. It's because it's consistent while changing significantly between a single issue. I am nevertheless confident that this is one living room as opposed to JTHM featuring two living rooms in the probably endless hypothetical living rooms in this house. You can tell that it's the same despite all the changes through the wood panelling in the wall that the couch is up against, and a painting of Happy Noodle Boy which is featured multiple times in the room. There's also a case to be made for the end table remaining consistent, but just changing in regards to what side of the couch it's put besides. I like the implication of the house constantly shifting, or Johnny consciously redecorating, and making his own furniture as seen with the baby lamp and mouse guillotine. I wouldn't be surprised if he customized the chair that the survey guy ended up sitting in during the first issue, and that Johnny later ends up killing himself in with the motion-tracking gun.
I think something noteworthy is that this is one of the cleanest rooms in the house and the best preserved. It has walls which are seemingly of the cracked plaster variety, but the wooden panelling on one wall is drawn to be pretty neat and consistent with few exceptions.
THE CURTAIN ROOM + BATHROOM
I feel like the existence of this room begs a lot of questions I'm incapable of answering. How did Johnny find that cracked vanity, and what's with the arrangement of the curtains? If it was conjured by the house then for what purpose, and what parts of Johnny's imagination or memories was used for the creation of this room? If Johnny found this furniture inside the house upon coming to live there instead of outside then was there a previous owner? What's with the Nailbunny portrait that ends up getting included alongside the Doughboys? Why have they been placed in the room where Johnny tried killing Devi? I'd like to think that this is supposed to be a memorial to both his inanimate friends, and the parts of himself that they contained which have now perished alongside them. It is composed of a lot of empty space judging from Devi's perspective as she's kicking the shit out of Johnny, and has walls of cracked plaster with wooden flooring. I find the bathroom intriguing as it's small and extremely regular compared to the other rooms. If this is compared with the strangeness at the beggining of the fourth issue, with normal basement levels becoming industrial passages and tunnels as Johnny descended deeper into the house, then this could come with the implication that the house's impossible nature is progressive, becoming more incomprehensible the further you go into it. I'd like to think the top level is the most normal, comparatively speaking, because the outside world is tethering it in a certain sense of the word. There's features outside that the house is forced to accomodate, such as the sky, which has probably been the most helpful in terms of ascertaining the layout and placement of rooms, and yet it's all still shifting.
THE ROOM WHERE JOHNNY BLOWS HIS BRAINS OUT!
I won't get into this room too much as it's a lot of what I've described before. It's sparsley furnished and has walls of cracked plaster with wooden flooring. However, I think something worth noting is that the painting seen in the fifth issue, which looks almost exactly like how Krik described Johnny transforming in his flashback, ends up dissapearing upon his ressurection. I wouldn't be surprised if that was just added for the composition of a panel and then forgotten about, but imagining that the essence of the wall is found in a lot of what's decorating the house, and is capable of influencing its presentation, is interesting. I feel that this is also supported by the state of the room when Johnny's ressurected once again. There's a lattice that's mysteriously broken on one of the windows, broken glass, a random pole and some planks scattered around. I guess someone could've broken in and discovered his not-so dead body, but there's an alternate possibility that Johnny's house is naturally in shambles and the powers of the wall were keeping certain parts of it preserved in a way that's not true to its reality.
I think the strangest thing about this room is that it's purposeless. There's no furniture that's defining it beyond the chair that Johnny's sitting in when he kills himself. It is almost empty which is becoming a pattern amongst these rooms. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the infinite rooms in the house followed this pattern, either being empty and purposeless or centered around one object or artifact.
UNIDENTIFIED ROOMS AND REOCCURING CURIOSITIES
I'll start with the room that has the radio which continues the aforementioned pattern of rooms with almost nothing in them besides a handful of objects or interchangeable furniture. There isn't a lot to write about besides that except the fact that it doesn't seem to have windows which could possibly put it in one of the basement levels. I don't have a lot to say about the room with the hanging dolls either aside from the fact that stringing up dolls, either through nails or nooses, just seems to be a thing that Johnny does sometimes in various parts of the house. However, I find no shortage of things to comment on as it concerns the unidentified room with the mirror. There's the fact that he'll sometimes take photos of his victims and the Doughboys, but in the middle of all of that is a photo of a woman. It could be a friend or one of his deceased dates, but it's still fascinating regardless. Phlegm is in limbo due to being a pre-canon character, but this is the closest we'll get to seeing the sort of person that Johnny used to spend time with before he began self-isolating. I also can't talk about this room without mentioning the reoccuring Egyptian knick-knacks that can be found throughout his house. I know ankhs are a goth thing, but with Johnny's preoccupations with aliens, and love of television and reading, I'd be willing to guess that he just likes Ancient Egypt in general. I find the specifics of what's shown to be in his home telling as you've got Ra-Horakhty [as a little statue], Thoth [as a poster], and then what looks to be a tyet which is associated with Isis. These are all connected through the well-known funerary practices of Ancient Egypt. I've read and annotated the Ebers Papyrus, "Book of the Dead", and the Pyramid Texts so I'm thrilled to find an oppurtunity to talk about this. There is no singular "head diety" due to changes in theology over the duration of this pantheon's existence, but Ra-Horakhty comes close and is a central figure in the Pyramid Texts. Ra is journeying in the sunboat across the horizon and into the duat [underworld] where a king could hope to be immortalized on a daily basis in the akhet. Thoth is another notable figure in the pantheon of Ancient Egypt, but appears in The Book of the Dead as the scribe who's tasked with writing down the verdict of all the weighings of the heart. In that same book, there's a tyet [sometimes called the knot-girdle of Isis] which has spells centering around it as an amulet of protection, typically made of red jasper or carnelian. I find these all interesting put together because of the themes of transformation and judgement which are already so prevalent throughout Johnny's motivations and his character in general. He basically goes through his own Unis-like journey, going through all the different facets of the afterlife to be reborn as something else. I haven't mentioned all the PEZ dispensers that can be seen throughout the house, but you've probably noticed those if you've been looking at all the diagrams. I don't think those make an appearence in the unidentified rooms, but I had to mention his love for those little candies somewhere. Those dispensers are real and from the 90s.
I think the unidentified room that's seen at the end of the sixth issue is probably the most interesting or at least the most confusing. It has a lot of furniture that's seen in the basement sublevels during the fourth issue and is in a state of complete decomposure with broken glass and knives scattered everywhere. I also noticed one of those weird striped poles that can also be seen in the room where Johnny ends up killing himself, specifically post-ressurection. I just find the idea of Johnny moving things out from the sublevels interesting, especially after his not-death, even if I couldn't give you his reasonings for doing that.
BASEMENT SUBLEVELS + TORTURE ROOMS
I know mapping out all of the sublevels is impossible, but I can map out what we've seen of it to give you the best idea possible of how it's capable of generating structures that don't make sense. It consists of the expected torture rooms, but also things like storage rooms, workstations, art galleries, and even a petting zoo. These are interconnected with a series of staircases and ladders, and rooms descend and ascend at random as you're traversing it, sometimes going on in long straight lines and other times zig-zagging. I would guess the square rooms are the most common, but there are circular rooms, dirt tunnels, a surprising amount of ladders, and hatches that can open up to impossible places, like the one Tess and Krik escape through in the fifth issue. There's a lot of pipes and wires which seem to become more prominent as you go deeper into the house's depths. I also noticed what could be blood, mold, or grime lining the bottom-top of the walls which doesn't seem to be as prominent on the upper levels. I'd like to think that could be a product of the blood wall moving through the house's structure since it's capable of changing places as seen in the first, second, and fourth issues. It could also be blood seeping through the floors of higher rooms. I suspect that Johnny has made some of his furniture, such as the chair that he kills himself in which have the forearm rests propped up by these big screws. He's also got a lot of dolls and nooses throughout the house. It didn't occur to me before because of the comics being black-and-white, but there's a chance that the house might be quite colorful. I can only cross-reference the panels with the covers, but based on those the walls are either white wood panelling, unpainted brown wood panelling, or cracked plaster of seemingly any color depending on the room. It seems like the floors are always plain wood, but either in white or unpainted brown. If there's a room with colored walls then the floors are probably brown for contrast.
There are some accomodations made to the rooms for the purposes of torture such as shackes on the walls, chains hanging from the ceiling, and these little buckle-things stuck into the floor to allow for wire or rope to pass through it for the purposes of restraining victims.
I don't know quite how to conclude this post. I probably could've mapped out more rooms like the one that Jimmy gets killed in, or those along the path that Tess and Krik take during the fifth issue, but I think you've got an idea of the house's intricacies at this point, and I'm getting tired of making diagrams. I was going to do things like furniture matches for reference purposes, but I think I'll save that undertaking for another post when I'm a bit less tired since I've been chipping away at this for about a week at this point. I don't have much to say about the paintings and posters as they'll be getting their own post...someday.
Do you design a lot of characters living in not-modern eras and you’re tired of combing through google for the perfect outfit references? Well I got good news for you kiddo, this website has you covered! Originally @modmad made a post about it, but her link stopped working and I managed to fix it, so here’s a new post. Basically, this is a costume rental website for plays and stage shows and what not, they have outfits for several different decades from medieval to the 1980s. LOOK AT THIS SELECTION:
OPEN ANY CATEGORY AND OH LORDY–
There’s a lot of really specific stuff in here, I design a lot of 1930s characters for my ask blog and with more chapters on the way for the game it belongs to I’m gonna be designing more, and this website is going to be an invaluable reference. I hope this can be useful to my other fellow artists as well! :)
Did you find this helpful? If you’re able, maybe buy me a coffee please? :D

HEY GUYS!!!!!! this is my awesome art contribution to the JTHM zine!!!! check it out here @jthmzine and check out our amazing organizer @devnny who is awesome for putting this together. this is gonna be such a cool project when its done. what a horribly, morbidly creative community we are!!!
speedpaint under the break
i churned this out in 4 hours in a freak bout of random motivation while i avoid doing my calculus assignments .no i did not freehand moose’s mouth are you fucking crazy im not THAT talented. the rest is alllll me though :P
It is now July, and about 2 months remain for the zine project! SQUEE!! 😱
We have received 13 AMAZING entries so far, and it is absolutely delightful to see the many different styles meshing together to make this zine come to life. 🥰 We also broke out of the 60’s this last week, and now have a whopping 75 SIGN-UPS, HOLY COW!!
With so much interest, we are debating putting the zine on Kickstarter as a way to handle preorders. (Mod was expecting like, 20 orders… not potentially 100? Please forgive, printing cost money.) There will be more updates as soon as we figure out exactly how to do that.
AND!! There are also a few extra goodies (that we have been sooo secretly planning) to add to the bundle outside of the sticker sheet! >:] Samples are being made, expect pictures in the coming weeks!
Once more, thank you so much for this outpouring of support for Johnny and his horrible, horrible comic series. It brings a tear to the eye to see how many people still hold it as dearly to their hearts as we do!
