As I was learning Swedish, I was curious to know if there were any documents relating to Linux and Linux Tordvalds, as I knew that he was originally from Finland, but that his mother tongue was Swedish.

Luckly there is! - And after 2 and half years living in Sweden I could understand the full content but notice there were no transcription (not even in swedish) since this content is from the earlies 2000s. So I would like to share both the original transcript and the traduction to english and french since its an important event for us people working with computers.

Binary Tree Implementation (C#)

This is an alternative implementation for the Binary Tree Average Per Level problem available at Meta Preparation Hub Site.

The problem is really simple, given a binary tree, find all the averages of its nodes per level.

In the test case example, we have the following binary tree, and we have to find its corresponding levels for each one of the levels. For example for level 3, with nodes (10,2,6) the average is 6, and the process is the same for each level.

The video example purpose a Deep First Search Approach, so I decided to use the opposite, a Breadth First Search algorithm. Needed to say the optimal solution is to use DFS, but still a good opportunity to show why and play with binary trees just for fun.

So when using BFS, we can use a stack (First In, First Out) so we traverse the tree per level.

For example, for Node(4) with leftChild = Node(6), rightChild = None,

We first add 4, the node, value to the corresponding index in the result array, so we can calculate the average later, and we add each one of its nodes to the stack.

For the given example, we would have the following stack, for level 3

[10,2,None,6]

This is when using this approach gets tricky and at the same makes DFS the best option.

When empty nodes are present in a level, we have to keep track of these nodes, and add 2 empty nodes more to the stack, this makes the time complexity for this algorithm to pass from O(n) for DFS to O(2**n) (2 to the power of n) [from linear to exponential].

So, although we avoid the use of recursion with BFS, we ended having the worst time complexity.

Regarding Space complexity, we improve a little, by avoiding the use of a hash map, and working directly on the result array, so instead of 0 (levels*nodes) we end with 0 (nodes).

As conclusion, this is a good example that sometimes the "natural" or first intuition approach is not always the best path to follow, being a Breadth Level one may think going for BFS is a good option but in the end DFS improves our time complexity (and perhaps make our code implementation easier too).

Not a long time ago, I haven't had enough information about the Technical Solutions Engineer (TSE) role, Only thing I have was a job description from the Google applications portal.

Almost one year from there, I'm about to concrete my first year at Google Cloud as a TSE and now involved in this Solutions world I'd like to share my experience, since there are a lot of new opportunities for great talent as Solutions Engineers.

Coming from a Software Engineering background, landing as a SE was an uncertain venture, but after one year of dealing with the tasks I can tell that there are great opportunities at these roles. The Solutions Engineer has to wear many hats, it's not a static role, so one way of defining the TSE/SE role is by describing its responsibilities.

Tech Support Agent / Subject Matter Expert

Solutions Engineers are the people to go to when something is firing up, if the customer (internal or external) as some issues with a technical dependency it's our task to jump on and solve the customer's pain.

For doing it, TSE has to have a wide and solid knowledge base, so training, work on certifications and dive deep into the products we are on charge it's a proactive action we can take so when problems come we are better prepared.

Consultants

But even tough work as a Support Agent is a big part of our day-to-day work, people in Solutions Engineering can also contribute to more architectural aspects by helping the clients to leverage the most of the products and services.

By identifying areas of improvement, updating systems with new tools available, being in constant communication with client, so they can share their needs as the time passes.

Software Development (A.K.A.) Tooling

But if the TSE/SE agent has the enthusiasm for coding and developing Software, TSEs/SEs have the option to collaborate with automating procedures, troubleshooting and SWE tools they can share with peers and customers.

Many Hats, Not So Much time.

These are, for my criteria, the most relevant roles a TSE/SE has, but the reality is that there are other options depending on each company and product. Along with the prior mentioned hats, I have had the opportunity to: provide training to vendors and assist as a point of contact for external customers and SWEs ( Software Engineers), help in public forums to solve technical issues, contribute to open source tools by finding bugs and testing.

And that's what I like about this role, its versatility and in my case the change to work in a world scale team, talking with people from different parts of the globe (from Australia to Europe and AMER). The opportunity to improve my communications skills tool set.

The question has the following requirements.

Given a datapipeline in the format of:

n -> number of nodes

g -> edges between nodes, [p,c] => parent and child

v -> nodes to be merged

Validate if the resulted pipeline is a valid one, in other words, the new pipeline does not have cycles ( self-cycles excluded).

So, at first this seems to be graph problem, we can separate the tasks to solve this challenge as follows:

1.- Create a graph structure that supports merge operations between nodes.

2.- Merge the nodes, update graph

If you need a way to compress your Cloud Storage Files/Folders, you can achieve this by using Cloud Functions and the Cloud Storage API.

In this example I'm using the python API.

You only have to create a Cloud Function, paste the code snippet available at github/gists. And add the library to the requirements.txt file.

I joined Google in June 14, at the moment of writing this article has already passed my first 6 months at the company ( 6 months it's the time when you're considered as a noogler).

After this time I'd like to summarize the 6 most relevant lessons I have had.

1 - Global Scale Engineering

During this time I have had the chance to work for systems and tools with global scale needs. Both from Customer's side and from internal Google systems.

Have a first hand experience with practices as test driven development, resources planning, reliability systems. Had made me a better engineer for sure.

Now I have a more deep awareness about the importance of good design, good testing and good monitoring for the success of products and services.

2 - Customer Success is the Key

As part of the Google Cloud Global Support Team, I have had the opportunity of helping customers to solve their issues and consults related to cloud solutions.

This is my first experience at tech support and I'm very satisfied with my day to day job. It's regarding to solve complex tech challenges from a wide variety of architectures and settings from all kind of customers from small startups to big conglomerates. From an engineering perspective this way I had viewed many ways to solve many problems.

3 - Global Community Workspace is AWESOME

Being at a Global Team is such a great experience, I work day to day with colleagues from different backgrounds & nationalities. This just not help to grow at technical side but as well I had grown as a person.

By learning new customs, ways of thinking and gathered experiences from my colleagues.

4 - Never Stop Learning

So Google has really big systems and some of them can only be learned once you're inside the magic.

Every day I learn something new, it could be something related to customer success, engineering or something more personal, but the learning process never stops.

I know the person next to me ( virtually of course due to pandemic times), has great talent and I can learn from them as much as they can learn from me.

5 - Don't Be Evil

Reputation is the most important asset for an engineer and of course for companies. Google makes an effort to emphasize the important of always act on behalf of the right thing to do.

Always with the core values in mind "Respect the user", "Respect the opportunity" and "respect each other".

6 - Small efforts, Great Results

Working side by side with brilliant people is as challenging as motivating. Of course when working at global scale it's easy to feel overwhelmed by the responsibility it takes to have global impact. But for those times it's good to remember that good, small but constant actions can make a huge difference.

Sometimes it's about fixing a small bug or adding more documentation, and that's ok, every improvement matters.

There are more lessons I have had at my time as Googler, but I hope these 6 can help others to improve in theirs' lives. Google had made innovations in work culture and engineering that can help us to became a better professional and I'd be glad if these notes have the same impact this 6 months have had for me.

Introduction

Haskell is a pure functional programming language with a lot of great features, one of them is the simplicity that offers for handling with list manipulation.

In this example, found at code signal, given a lastBackupTime timestamp and a list of process ( each process is a list where index 0 is the timestamp of the last change to the file, and index 0 is the file id ). The program has to return a list of unique file ids for those who last modification occurs after the lastBackupTime.

Explanation

This problem can be divided into 4 small problems. First we need to filter those files where lastModification happen after the backup timestime.

Luckly Haskell has exaclty a filter function:

filter :: (a -> Bool) -> [a] -> [a]

The filter signature applies a comparison function to a list and for those elements where the comparison is true are part of the result.

filter (\xs -> xs !! 0 > lastBackupTime) changes

For our problem whe use a lambda function that takes the index 0, timestamp, for each element on the changes list and compares it to the lastBackupTime value.

Our next task is to select only the file 1, this can be done with the map function

map :: ( a -> a ) [a]

map applies a function to each element of a list and return a list of the same size where each element is a transformation of the element after aplying the function.

In Haskell to access elements on a list at specific index whe can use the ( list !! index) operator.

map ( !! 1 ) $ filter (\xs -> xs !! 0 > lastBackupTime) changes

f $ g is equivalent to f ( g ())

Good to notice here is the $ operator what this does is explicit indicates to the Haskell compiler than whe apply the map function after we apply the filter to our changes list.

After applying the map function we need to select only unique file ids,

The Data.List module has a nub function that does this.

After removing duplicates the last thing to do is to sort the file ids.

For this we can use the sort function available at the Data.Ord module.

Third Place at Artifitial Inteligence for Remote Education Hackathon sponsored by IBM Cloud Technologies  and TalentNetwork

In collaboration with a Friend we implemented a mobile solution in order to use the IBM Watson capabilities to help teachers and students to complement their learning process with the power of AI ( Artifitial Inteligence).

Using IBM Watson tools the app can search high educational content by text or voice. And filter the content to protect the student of bad content as (spam, adult websites, or poor educational content references).

This was my first participation in a Hackathon and it was a great experience, and better we can reach into the podium as one of the 3 best projects of more than 100 participants projects from all latinamerica.

Mayberry - The Developer Portal

A personal project made with Grails ( Groovy ) . Inspired by the Spotify’s Backstage . I implemented a microservices oriented portal to help developers create and administrate their software resources.

The project includes:

A seed project constructor, connected to gitlab, developers can create new projects on base to seed projects that handle the basic configurations as database connections so the team can focus on just create new value.

Port Mapping Table: Thanks to the database registry project, every one wih access can see what ports are available or in use. And which services uses determined port.

Infrastucture Graph: The team can visualize how the dependencies are between all the modules in the organization. Also the levels of this dependencies.

Team Responsabilities: Each services can be handled by one or many teams.

I deployed Mayberry for the developers grops in my job at CXC . As result it helped us to improve our software development times, so we can start developing new products at 150% rate more efficent.

Previous Work in Telecommunications

I took the CCNA Course and the Networks & Cibersecurity module during University. Thanks to this I was able to start a parallel career as networks consultant.

My job includes negotation with providers, enterprise networks redesign, and implementation. Configuring network devices as swithces, routes, firewall and wireless.

Continous Learning is essential to all IT professionals , to be updated with the latest trends and technologies.

In this section from January 2021 - April 2021 I I could learn about Scala and it’s capabilities to handle big data processing and concurrent programming.

Also I could learn the foundations of EcmaScript 6/7/8/10 to be updated at frontend development.

On the server side and devops culture I learned more about Linux Server . And How to do a responsible and safe administration of Linux Servers.
