How strongly do game crashes affect player retention? There are lots of reasons to avoid having a game crash to desktop/home but, is a game crashing a major cause for player churn?
Game crashes cause lost progress and build frustration in players. Frustration with the game is one of the biggest factors in causing players to drop the game. As such, the frequency of the game crash is directly proportionate to how much they affect the game. For example, if the game crashes 100% of the time on boot, player retention drops to zero because nobody can play. This is why most game crashes are forbidden during the certification process - the platforms don't want crashing games associated with them either.
Game crashes are typically declared Priority 0 showstoppers when it comes to how important they are to fix for this reason. We never suffer a game crash to live while we can isolate its cause and fix them because we know that whenever a player runs into one, it will ruin their current game experience. If you've got four million COD players playing concurrently daily, then a one-in-a-million super rare crash is still happening roughly four times per game those players play and not only ruining those players' game, but also potentially having knock on effects for their teams.
