Abderrahmane Sissako talking about the reason behind making of Bamako.
Stranger Things (2015) Dir: Matt Duffer + Ross Duffer (The Duffer Brothers)
So this isn’t necessarily a film. However, it’s far more than just a series. There’s cinematic quality to the show overall, and I’m fangirling at the accuracy in this modern period piece.Even all of the fan art is period and it gives my creative self a jolt of excitement.
Tallulah (2015) Dir: Sian Heder
Netflix is putting out some great quality stuff, and this is just another to add to the list. This film keeps you on your feet. Just the perfect amount of twists and turns and phenomenal performances from all. Cameo spotlight on Uzo Aduba and Zachary Quinto
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (2011) Dir: Stephen Daldry
Also happened upon this one, and gladly so. Centers a storyline based on the events of 9/11 and frames it in a non-typical way. I think that’s why I like this movie so much. Great performances, and was surprised by a cameo from Viola Davis.

Mala Mala (2014) Dir: Antonio Santini + Dan Sickles
A very beautiful film, showcasing a variety of beautiful people, inside and out. A doc that gives you everything straight forward.
If I Were You (2011) Dir: Joan Carr-Wiggin
The tag for this film is, “What happens when your new best friend is your husband’s mistress?” It got me from there. It’s a light watch, but definitely entertaining.
Top Five (2014) Dir: Chris Rock
Just happened upon this movie as I’m always searching for new films to view. Honestly, it’s the best thing I’ve seen in a while. It hit the spot in the moment and it’s definitely something I’ll revisit quite soon. If you’re into a cameo filled film, that done in just the right way, then you’ll certainly love this one. So many great faces and short comedic bursts that gave me joy. I was quite honestly just overjoyed to see Rosario in an amazing role, and I’m even happier with the direction that Chris Rock is venturing into with his most recent roles.
Some of the amazing cameos include: Whoopi Goldberg, Tichina Arnold, Gabourey Sidibe, Leslie Jones, Jerry Seinfeld, Adam Sandler, Kevin Hart, DMX, Taraji P Henson, and so many more.
Also, executive producer credits to Jay-Z and Kanye West, which I thought was pretty spectacular. And composer credits to Questlove. So all around, the involvement in the film is just crazy good.
T-Rex (2015) Dir: Drea Cooper + Zackary Canepari
An absolutely moving story! I definitely was not aware of this in the moment of it all during the London 2012 Olympics, and am a little shocked that not many throw out Claressa Shields’ name with the other many ‘firsts’ of the Olympic games. First Female Boxer Gold Medalist. They even touch on the hype of Gabby Douglas with the media and her endorsements after the 2012 games, which I thought was quite honest and intriguing. Nevertheless, it’s a touching and sincere piece that’s right on time for the 2016 Rio Olympic games.
Colonia (2015) Dir: Florian Gallenberger
Most often a fan of ‘based on a true story’ movies, and this one’s not an exception. Gives me the same vibe as Argo, in the best way possible. Perfectly balanced with suspense, some romanticism, and a few strong unsettling characters that really make the story compelling overall.

Fresh Dressed (2015) Dir: Sacha Jenkins
Good watch. Nothing extremely moving, but still a good watch. If anything, I was mostly just thinking about how they were able to get such big celebrities to sit down and chat.
Safety Not Guaranteed (2012) Dir: Colvin Trevorrow
I have some kind of affinity for the Duplass brothers, but specifically more so for Mark Duplass. Besides that, I think the casting overall in this film is just insanely perfect. And a film that makes me wonder what is going on is always great. Is this guy just crazy as fuck, or is he genius and actually has created a time traveling machine. You’re in for a ride, and no one better than Aubrey Plaza to be the driving force of getting down to what’s really going on. The dry humor works excellently here and I seriously can’t get enough of this film. This is exactly how you do a weird indie film with a twist.
The Brass Teapot (2013) Dir: Ramaa Mosley
It started off just perfect for a weird indie film, comparable to one of my favorites Safety Not Guaranteed. However, the film loses itself and doesn’t know what it wants to be. Great concept, poor execution? Could be a casting choice, combined with some writing letdowns, but overall I just wanted entertained. Some decent moments were shared, so I’ll give the film that at least.
Movie Quote of the Week: Paris is Burning (1990)
“When someone has rejection from their mother and father, their family, they - when they get out in the world - they search. They search for someone to fill that void.”
2 Days in New York (2012) Dir: Julie Delpy
I’m all for a director/actor, just as long as it’s done right. This is definitely worth a watch. I can always find a film on juxtaposing family dynamics entertaining, and this is a sincere poster child for the theme.

Slow Learners (2015) Dir: Sheena M. Joyce + Don Argott
Mostly watched this for Adam Pally. Been a fan since Happy Endings, and I can’t say he’s not attractive. The film has a very specific humor to it, but I’m not saying that’s a bad thing.
Special note: I loved the cameo of Frangela. Whoever decided to put them in this film and give them some more exposure is a godsend. Here’s to more Frangela in the world!
Girlhood [Band de Filles] (2014) Dir: Céline Sciamma
What’s better than an indie film? A foreign indie film. Definitely was a great find among what’s offered on Netflix.
Overall a good story, and some striking scenes. Mostly believable performances. One thing that I absolutely love in a movie is the ability to showcase an average person’s viewpoint, no matter how common, and make it entertaining for others to watch or even relate to. This movie definitely does that.
