Satyr’s Head with Antlers (1624-1627)

An expressive carved ivory satyr mask fitted with naturally irregular stag antlers. It formed part of a larger ensemble created by the court sculptor Christof Angermair for Elector Maximilian I of Bavaria, which originally included a chandelier with a satyr’s head and four satyr masks. The work is an exceptional example of Munich court sculpture and Kunstkammer culture, combining natural specimens with works of art.
