The biggest example is “shop at [insert group here] owned businesses” constantly given as a way to support an oppressed community.

tbh I feel like most of society’s rhetoric around “protecting children” comes from the same place as deep-patriarchy rhetoric on “protecting women”, where the idea is that they’re sacred and valuable but also treated essentially as property, and the the desire to protect them is largely experienced as a desire to ensure that those property rights are sacrosanct

If the state of the American healthcare system is such that even a person with a reasonably well-paying job, with better health insurance than most other people are privy to, can’t afford to quit their job, even though their illness makes it increasingly difficult for them to work, because they wouldn’t be able to afford their treatment without having to get their parents to take out a second mortgage on their second house, what does this say about the state of things for literally everyone else in the country??? 

in college a teacher explained that criticizing gentrification wasn’t about shaming or blaming the white people that were most likely living in the only apartments they could afford - it was about asking why their living there was inherently valuable. it’s not really about who - it’s about why. why white lives are literally valued more. why is the presence of white people a gentrifying force? what is it about whiteness that elicits immediate value? 

And if you look up the stages of gentrification, it usually goes like “artists and teachers and etc move into this neighborhood because its what they can afford” and THEN “developers notice these people and try to capitalize on them.”
