Reblogging because after about my whole life in the Brazilian educational system, I had never heard about these women. Not once. But what did we learn about, you ask? We learned about the guy (a megalomaniacal Portuguese) who just said that Brazil was independent, and that was it. Up until now, I didn’t even know anyone had fought for independence against Portugal. All my teachers said that there was no real war of independence.

I had the same reaction when researching these women. I was shocked to find that a lot of the women I did this series with did incredible things, but their achievements were undermined and not written about, or shoved down to learn about some incredibly boring man, and I do think that’s what’s wrong with history a lot of the times

You know every show that the premise is like “people find out ghosts/monsters/demons are real and are charged with stopping them” appeal to me way more now as a post-graduate not because I believe in ghosts more or whatever but because can you IMAGINE just being handed a job that you don’t even need to apply for? Like just being told “basically there’s this bad thing and all you do is make sure it doesn’t do what it wants” that’s just customer service baby and I worked that for 6 goddamn years! Just TRY getting past “I have a job to offer you” before I can jump down your throat agreeing.

I was telling my mom, my sister, and my sister’s boyfriend a story about God turning some dude into a dog and I guess God got mad at me so he reached down in the form of a tree branch, grabbed me by the arm, and chucked me into the front gate so hard I died on impact. I woke up in the afterlife where there were chocolate birds and it was like a fancy bar and grill and also all the waiters were skeletons, but when I asked one if he’d always been a skeleton, he went into the janitor’s closet so he wouldn’t have to answer me.
